Division 1. Semi Final Series Game 1 of 3, Tuesday 24th February

Starting line up for Geelong- Durston 8, Miller 7, Zablan 6, Snarey 5, Gibbons 4, Medew 2, Ricketts DH, Fraim 3, Wood J 9, Evins Pitcher.

Essendon- McIntyre S-5, Dicker 4, Sullivan 8, Stokes 3, Davies 7, Tamburrino DH, McIntyre D 9, Moon 6, McDonald T- 2. Formisano G- Pitcher.   



Top 1st- Formisano was on target as he got the first out looking then Scott McIntyre had to hurry on a slow roller to make the second out at 1st base. The Essendon pitcher looked in control as he got the third out swinging.


Bottom 1st- Miller took a good catch in left to begin the defensive effort for Geelong then Evins got the second out with a high fast-ball swinging strikeout. The innings finished with a groundout to 3rd .


Top 2nd- Snarey led off and lined hard up the middle for the first hit of the game. Formisano hit back with a strikeout looking then Medew cleared the shortstop and singled to left advancing the runner one base. Snarey stole 3rd as Medew got tagged out at 2nd, Medew was injured on the play but walked off with help from the trainers. He was replaced in the game by Levy. A groundout to 2nd ended the dig with one runner on base.

Bottom 2nd- Miller of Geelong took another good catch running back onto the warning track in left for the first out. Gibbons fielded well at 2nd, stretching to his right to get Davies at 1st for the second out. A flyball to centre made it three contact outs for the dig.

Top 3rd- Two contact outs and Fraim hit one back up the middle for a single but got caught stealing 2nd after McDonald was too quick from the dish.

Bottom 3rd- Moon of the Bombers was caught on the warning track in left for the second out making it an eventful night for Geelong’s Miller. McDonald lined hard to left for a single and the top of the Essendon order was up again. S Mcintyre hit to right and made it 1st and 3rd occupied but Evins kept his cool and got a fly ball to centre right to end it there.

Top 4th- Formisano landed his curve ball deceptively to get the first out looking and the second swinging, the innings ended with an infield pop-up.

Bottom 4th- Evins threw low and away to get the second out swinging after a fly to centre was caught then Davies got on after an error. Tamburrino hit one that bounced in front of the centre fielder and it was then two on with two out. D McIntyre hit long to right but got caught by Wood as he was running back near the track. The Baycats outfileders doing a great job keeping Essendon scoreless with the teams tied at three hits apiece.

Top 5th- A fly ball to centre made the first out for the Bombers then Formisano threw low and away to get the second and third outs swinging. The game was at deadlock.

Bottom 5th- Evins got the first out looking at his curve ball that dropped off the table nicely, he used it again to get the second out swinging. He dropped an off-speed pitch in for the third K of the dig. Into the sixth innings and the pitchers had control of two very good hitting line-ups.

Top 6th- A fly to right started it off then Formisano got two called strikeouts with low fast balls to end it.

Bottom 6th- Dicker drew the first walk of the game and Sullivan was after it from the first pitch before he singled to right after a good diving effort from Wood couldn’t steal the hit. Stokes grounded up the 1st base line to put two runners in scoring position with one out and the clean-up hitter at the plate. Geelong intentionally walked Davies and a fly ball to short made the second out. Geelong again relied on their outfielders when a fly ball to right ended it with no addition to the score.

Top 7th- Snarey walked with two out to make it two free passes, in total, for the game. However, Formisano was true to form and left the runner on base after a strikeout swinging.

Bottom 7th- Moon batted defensively and went deep into a count then got HPB. T McDonald lined hard to right for a single on a hit and run play to advance the runner to 2nd. S McIntyre sac-bunted and it was one out with two runners in scoring position. The pressure was on all round when Dicker hit a sac-fly to right and the first score of the game. McDonald came in on a wild pitch and the Bombers were leading by two. Sullivan lined to left for a single and Geelong changed pitchers as Forbes made his way to the mound. Sullivan stole 2nd but Forbes was up for it and finished it with a strikeout looking.

Top 8th- Formisano of the Bombers sat the batters down in order again as Kyle Bedford was ready to come in and close.

Bottom 8th- Davies of the Bombers swung and missed twice before he hit a triple to right then Forbes shaped a curve ball nicely for a strikeout swinging. He got another swinging at a high fastball, then Moon went deep into a count before he drew a walk. It was then 1st and 3rd occupied with two out. A fly-ball to right finished the inning. Geelong need two runs to make Essendon bat again, whilst the Bombers need 3 outs for the win.

Top 9th- Bedford came in to pitch for Essendon. Wood of Geelong lined hard to centre but the ball held up well for Sullivan for the first out. A curve ball shaped around the zone got the second out swinging then Miller walked but a fly-ball ended the innings and the game.
