It was a pitcher’s duel from the start as imports Sanderius (Newport) and Buzachero (Preston) kept the batters quiet for the first five innings.
Newport got the first run of the game in the third when Seipolt was hit by a pitch and then batted around on an error and two ground outs.
In the sixth inning, the Rams strung together three hits when Lawman, in the clutch, got his third for the day with a double that went over the left fielder’s head. They then led 5-0 and never looked back.
Buzachero vacated the mound for Preston in the same innings with two out. Godbould stepped in and took the game into the eighth when he left the mound with two outs and the bases loaded. Hashiguchi made a brief appearance when he hit a batter to make the score 6-0 before the final defensive out of the game for Preston.
Newport had three players with multiple hits: Simpson, Lawman and T Malthouse. Meanwhile, Jordan Ley and Buzachero got two hits for the visitors who collected five in total. Bubbie also threw 83 pitches without conceding a walk.
Next week Newport travel to Sandringham on Sunday and Preston are away to Sunshine at the same time.
