Teams Hit their way through Pool Play AJLC Day 4

SURFERS PARADISE, QLD. — Hitting continued to dominate on the final day of pool play at the 2015 Australian Junior League Championships, as 16 teams continued their quests to represent Australia in the Asia-Pacific Junior League Championships in Saipan this coming June.

Yarra Rangers 16, Swan Hills 9

Jarryd Dale and Ciaran Palmer hit back-to-back solo home runs as the Yarra Rangers clubbed their way ahead of Swan Hills 16-9 in the first game of the final day of pool play. Dale finished the day 4-for-5 with two home runs and five RBIs, while Palmer went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.

The visiting Rangers jumped ahead to and early 6-0 lead after the first frame, but Swan Hills cut the lead down to one run thanks to consistent hitting highlighted by an RBI triple off the bat of Cooper Harrison. The Rangers scored in every inning except for two, cruising to a 16-9 win.

Coastal Bay 10, Brisbane Metro 9

Coastal Bay rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh inning to narrowly beat Brisbane Metro 10-9. Reilly Comrie hit a game-tying two-run double in the seventh, followed by an RBI single by Dion Davey that put the Sharks ahead by a run. Darcy Lamont then struck out three batters in the bottom of the final frame to seal the win for Coastal Bay.

The two teams also hit three home runs combined, with Jacob Wallace going deep for Brisbane Metro and Chase Diggins and Jack Ramsay going yard for Coastal Bay.

Perth Metro North 13, Hills 3

Perth Metro North scored six runs in the final inning to dominate Hills on the final day of pool play. Ellis Deakin homered for Perth, Caleb Shepherd continued his hot hitting for Hills, clubbing another home run and keep the game close in the early innings.

Southern Mariners 11, Brisbane North 8

Led by a five-run fourth inning, the Southern Mariners ended pool play with a close 11-8 win over Brisbane North. Kai-Noa Wynyard led off the ballgame with a home run for Brisbane North, and the home team jumped ahead to a 6-2 lead after two innings. But the Mariners bounced back with the five-run fourth and three more runs scored in the final two innings.

Brisbane South 10, Yarra Rangers 4

Brisbane South scored seven runs in the final three innings to defeat the Yarra Rangers 10-4. Ryschan Thompson, Jack Butterworth, and Maxim Watson all doubled in the win for Brisbane South, while Aiden Willis went deep for the Rangers.

Adelaide South 11, Canberra 1

Adelaide South hit four home runs en route to an 11-1 rout of Canberra in six innings. Harrison Knuckey went deep twice, while Curtis Mead and Mason Clavell had one home run apiece in the win.

Perth Metro Central 25, Manly 4

Perth Metro Central pushed 14 runs across the board in the top of the fourth inning to end pool play with a dominant 25-4 win over Manly. Manly led 3-2 after the first frame, but Perth put a six-spot on the board in the top of the second inning to pull away for the win.

Cronulla 14, Adelaide North 4

Cronulla scored 11 runs in the first three innings to beat Adelaide North 14-4 at Runaway Bay. Ben Carroll hit a massive two-run home run for the Sharks and also chipped in two doubles, while Ethan Stacy tossed five strong innings on the mound. Adelaide North saw standout performances from Sean Maple, who homered in the fifth inning, and Zac Heintze-Unger, who made a fantastic play early in the game.

Swan Hills 2, Ryde 1

After falling to the Yarra Rangers earlier in the day, Swan Hills finished the day on a high note with a close 2-1 win over Ryde in the final game of pool play on Diamond 1. Ryde took an early lead, scoring once in the top of the first inning. Home team Swan Hills blasted ahead in the bottom of the fourth inning, when Isaiah Harris-Lewis delivered the game-winning hit on a two-run home run that sealed the win.
