A tribute to David Boell (3.12.1938 – 8.4.2014)

The North Balwyn Baseball Club is deeply saddened at the passing of club patriarch David Boell.

David was the club’s highest games player representing NBBC over a number of decades, eras, premierships and fantastic years.

He will be fondly remembered by all as a gentleman, great competitor and willing participant in every part of club life.  His tireless contribution to baseball was recognised nationally in 2000 when he received the Australian Sports Medal.

“Boelly’s” significant sporting achievements after joining NBBC in 1955 include:

·         More than 800 games with the club

·         1st 9 batting – 1974, 75, 76

·         1st 9 fielding – 1967

·         2nd 9 MVP – 2000

·         2nd 9 batting – 1983, 84, 85, 87

·         2nd 9 fielding – 1969, 84, 85, 86, 88, 89, 95

·         3rd 9 MVP – 1991

·         3rd 9 batting – 1991, 93

·         3rd 9 fielding – 1994

·         4th 9 MVP – 2005

·         4th 9 batting – 2005

·         Charles Duncan award for Best Senior Clubman – 1969

·         A.T. Dunstan Award (the club’s highest honour) for outstanding service over an extended period – 1988.

David was also a tireless worker for the club off the field and volunteered for the roles of Club President – 1982 until 1992, Macleay/Myrtle Park Advisory Committee representative – 25 year commitment, and U13s coach.

He is held in such high esteem by the club that the Club Champion Trophy (now the 1st Nine MVP Award) is named jointly with A.D Kearton in his honour.

After retiring only few years ago, David has been a regular visitor to home games at Myrtle Park, spending the afternoon watching old friends and new stars of the club. He was very proud of the club’s resurgence in recent years and keen to hear results of all junior and senior teams, always interested in all the participants.

David was a great friend to many, a talented baseballer and a loyal servant of the North Balwyn Baseball Club for over 52 years, continuing to support his beloved club despite ill health in recent years.

His friendliness, knowledge, experience and passion will be sadly missed.

Baseball Victoria wishes to pass on its condolences to David's family, friends and to the North Balwyn Baseball Club.
