2021/22 VSBL Season: Division 3 Round 5

VSBL Division 3 were busy scoring runs over the weekend as Springvale, Bonbeach, Chelsea, and Pakenham remain in the top four going into round 6.

Division 3 Firsts

Pakenham Pumas 1 v Bonbeach Bluejays 11

Cam Hubbard homered for Bonbeach while the Bluejays also had doubles from Mathew Prior, David Steere, and Matthew Bucci.

Tim Bellerby pitched most of the game for Pakenham while Max Hunter appeared in relief. Hunter had three singles and an RBI while Shaun Fahy, Mitchell Lording, and Darren Reeves had base hits too.

Bonbeach improved to 4-1 while Pakenham sits at 3-2 with upcoming home games v Chelsea and Geelong, respectively.

North Coburg Rebels 9 v Geelong Baycats 13

North Coburg took a 6-1 lead after the first but Geelong soon fought back with one run in the second and seven in the third. Geelong added four in the fifth and gave up a final three to the Rebels but the Baycats still came away with their first win.

Martin Bouma threw five innings with five hits and one strikeout while Connor Hughes and Will Cavanagh pitched for Geelong too. Bouma had three singles and Connor Hughes doubled as Cavanagh, Rob Hickey, Tom Dickson, Cade White, and Tyson Cherry all had singles.

Jack Pinches threw 4.33 innings for North Coburg with nine hits, five earned runs and seven unearned runs. Andy Karp also pitched, throwing two scoreless innings. Andrew Malthouse, Jay Grahovac, Marc De Petro, and Gavin Alki had two RBIs apiece.

The Rebels host Springvale and Geelong heads to Pakenham next.

Chelsea Dolphins 13 v Footscray Bulldogs 7

Glenn Sanders led the way with four RBIs as Chelsea earned win number three. Both sides had nine hits as Chelsea made four errors and Footscray had three.

The Bulldogs led 2-0 after the second but Chelsea came back with four in the third, followed by another four in both the fifth and the sixth. Footscray scored three in the fifth and two in the sixth but Chelsea still finished in front with one more run in the final frame.

Chelsea's Ryoji Shinoda had two hits as Lachlan Davies knocked in three. Shinoda threw 2.1 innings with 10 first pitch strikes and five strikeouts.

Shannon Groenendyk took two walks at the plate for Chelsea and also pitched 4.1 innings with seven strikeouts, 18 first pitch strikes, and a 1.85 WHIP.

Footscray's Abbey McLellan pitched three innings and threw 13 first pitch strikes as Nathan Axiaq struck out four and Jaime Harvey put in work on the mound too. Harvey had three hits for Footscray and Shane Kinlough had two RBIs.

3-2 Chelsea and 2-3 Footscray both have away games next at Bonbeach and North Western, respectively.

Springvale Lions 7 v North Western Titans 1

The Lions led 4-0 after the second and added three more runs across the last few innings, all while giving up just one unearned run to North Western in the third.

Scott Baillie got the win for Springvale, striking out seven in six innings with four hits and three walks. Rydge Hogan had one walk and one strikeout in an inning of relief.

Hogan had three singles and a home run for three RBIs while Adam Thatcher and Neal Cavanagh also knocked in runs. Joel Stubbs, Steve Hughes, Matthew Cameron, and Baillie had hits as well.

North Western gave up three unearned runs as Connor and Cameron Wilson shared time on the mound. Jarrod Johns had two singles while Cameron Wilson and Ryan Tompkins doubled.

Springvale is now 5-0 with the next game at North Coburg as North Western is 2-3 with a home game v Footscray in round 6.
