The 56-year-old has been involved in the game for 49 years, and has been named the Dandenong Leader’s Senior Sports Star of the year.

Wearne, who is a stalwart of the Springvale Lions Baseball Club, said he was honoured to be recognised.

“It’s all pretty exciting,” Wearne said.

“I’m still fairly competitive and fairly active, so it’s always good to have a win.”

Initially, Wearne took up the game because his father was involved, but it soon became a lifelong passion — one which he has passed through the generations.

Both of his children have played for Australia, and nowadays, his daughter is the president of the Springvale Lions Baseball Club, while his son is the coach.

Wearne, who is a life member of the club and the current treasurer, said he had no intention of packing in the game.

“One thing I love about the game is it’s given me the opportunity to travel around the world playing and following my children,” he said.

“I guess my biggest achievement is to continue to play till the age I’m at now … I generally get in two games a week and when you get to my age you get to play in the real competition and the Masters competition.

“While I’m physically capable, I intend to play … you don’t stop playing because you get old, you get old because you stop playing.”
