2019/20 VSBL Season: Division Two Round 13

There's been plenty of movement in VSBL Division 2 as Williamstown has caught up to Moorabbin at the top of the ladder in the firsts. It's a similar story in the seconds as the Wolves have successfully climbed the ladder. The Braves are still undefeated with 11 wins in the thirds, two games clear of the Panthers whereas over in the fourths, Williamstown has a perfect 11-0 record ahead of Malvern and St Kilda, both with seven wins.

Division 2 Firsts - Round 13

Werribee Giants 5 v Doncaster Dragons 6

Werribee lost another heartbreaker with just one run separating the two sides at the end of the game.

The Giants relied on strong offensive production from Justin Gil, who had four hits (three doubles) as he helped drive in two runs and then scored twice himself. Joshua Lee went 2-for-3 at the plate as he scored three times.

Lee got the loss though on the mound for the Giants as he gave up three runs on six hits with one strikeout across four innings. His counterpart Wes de Jong also threw four innings, giving up the same number of runs on five hits with three strikeouts.

Ben Palensky led the way for Doncaster offensively as he got on the end of one, hitting it over the fence for a two-run home run which was one of two runs for him on the day. Brendan McDonald, Nic Unland and Luke Utting each had two hit, one run games, Unland and Utting rounding to second each time. Cameron Lethborg had a two-base hit that drove in two runs.

Simon Fitzmaurice got the win in the middle for Doncaster, giving up one run on three hits across three innings with two strikeouts.

It was a win the Dragons desperately needed as they continue to make their mark on the competition, now on a four-game win streak after starting the season 0-9 while the Giants have missed an opportunity to be 10-3 with the top two teams and are instead sitting tied with Malvern at 9-4.

Doncaster hosts Thursday's midweek game.

Malvern Braves 11 v Preston Pirates 14

Malvern has lost the last two games as Preston is now on a three-game winning streak.

The Braves put four on the board in the first but the Pirates were right there with an answer, scoring six in the bottom frame. Malvern responded as well, retaking the lead with a 9-6 scoreline going into the bottom of the third before Preston scored two.

The fourth inning was quiet, giving way to the fifth when Malvern scored one and Preston tied it up at 10-all. Malvern's offense dried up while Preston's kept going, scoring four more in the sixth to put the game back in favour of the Pirates.

A lone run in the seventh for Malvern didn't quite cut it as the Braves dropped another close one.

Preston's pitcher Ian Cross made a big difference for the team as the Pirates secured a 6-6 record after toppling the Braves. Meanwhile Malvern is 9-4, just shy of Williamstown and Moorabbin at the top. Both teams will be wanting to win in their next matchup to continue their fine seasons as Preston hosts the midweek game.

Bonbeach St Chads 4 v St Kilda Saints 14

A 10-run win to St Kilda allowed the Saints to breaking up a painful three-game losing streak. This victory puts more distance between St Kilda and the bottom of the ladder where Bonbeach unfortunately remains.

St Kilda's reliable lineup of Rolando Curiel, Eduardo Escalona, Marian Favia and Daisuke Hebara got the job done along with the rest of the Saints, something they will look to do again in the coming weeks.

In the battle of the two bottom teams, the Bluejays will hope to get their first win of the season in their next encounter of the series.

Port Melbourne Mariners 10 v Moorabbin Panthers 0

A few sporadic digs where the Mariners managed a collection of runs assisted them as they achieved a shutout victory over Moorabbin.

This marks the first time Moorabbin has been shut out this season, as the Panthers have lost three recent games to relinquish their unbeaten streak and let a few teams make up the distance. Now Williamstown joins Moorabbin at the top of the ladder, with the Wolves scoring two runs more than the Panthers over the first 13 games.

The Panthers have been outdone in recent weeks, as showcased once more on Sunday when Port Melbourne collected nine hits to Moorabbin's five. It was a quiet game to start before the Mariners put two on in the third and three in the fourth. Port Melbourne scored one more run in the sixth and two in the seventh to keep the fun rolling.

Two more runs came around to score in the top of the ninth for a fantastic finish. William Parsons smashed three hits on the day to lead his team, while Sam Morris chimed in with two hits and two RBIs.

Chris Doyle, Jack White, Matt Morris and Ryan Lea all chimed in with hits for Port Melbourne as well.

The Mariners did leave seven on base throughout the day while Moorabbin stranded eight runners. Travis Finney, Ben Laux, Zach Kamerman, Mitch Barr and Jon Ballantyne all had one hit for Moorabbin in a quiet day offensively.

Parsons threw six solid innings with those five hits allowed along with one walk and six strikeouts. Morris followed up with three innings of great pitching, giving up no hits and just three walks with four strikeouts.

Moorabbin had Stewart Mathieson on the mound for six innings.

The Mariners are slowly making their way up the ladder after winning the past two games and are a game out from the top four going into round 14 at Moorabbin.

Williamstown Wolves 3 v Mulgrave Rebels 2

Williamstown was lucky to get away with this result which now sees the Wolves sitting at the top of the ladder, tied at 10-3 with Moorabbin but with a better ‘runs for’ total. The Wolves have scored 97 runs while the Panthers have scored 95 thus far.

The Wolves offense was kept quiet but they got the job done. Robert Higginson tallied three hits for two RBIs while Aaron Green, Daniel Chicop and Thorne each had two hits, Jayde Thorne coming home once also. Jason McDonald and Hiroshi Narasaki each had one hit, one run games.

Dennis Neal got the win for Williamstown as he went six innings giving up two runs on five hits with four strikeouts. Thorne got the save as he gave up one hit and one strikeout while facing five batters in one inning.

Three Rebels players had two hits; Nick Coy (one being a double), Caleb Poole (with one run) and Grant Miller but it was Nick Thompson who stole the show with a two-run home run.

Jayson Arthur was on the mound for five innings for the Rebels, giving up one earned run in seven hits with four strikeouts. Liam Richardson was in relief for four innings, giving up just five hits with three strikeouts.

Mulgrave isn't too far off from the top half of the ladder, sitting seventh with a 5-7 record as the Rebels remain confident they can overcome the Wolves in the midweek game.

Division 2 Seconds - Round 11

Werribee Giants 7 v Doncaster Dragons 14

Doncaster has taken the first game of this series and in quite commanding fashion too.

The Dragons have distanced themselves from the Giants by one game as they keep in touch with the top four. After a 19-7 win over Bonbeach in round 10 and this win over Werribee, Doncaster is looking in fine form with just two weeks to go until the break.

Bonbeach St Chads 4 v St Kilda Saints 16

St Kilda has won four in a row to get the Saints into a position that suggests they can strongly contend for the title, currently sitting in fourth spot.

The Saints started the scoring early, putting two runs on the board before six came around in the second. Three runs in both the third and the fourth kept things rolling along nicely for St Kilda. Bonbeach had a burst of offense, putting up four in the final inning but St Kilda answered once more with another run as the victory was never in doubt.

Bonbeach’s first and only win of the season came in round two, and when this series continues this weekend, they Bluejays will try their hardest to make it their second. St Kilda was the third best record at 6-5 behind Williamstown and Moorabbin, both 9-2, and Malvern at 8-2-1.

Port Melbourne Mariners 4 v Moorabbin Panthers 2

Each team scored one run in their first digs and then Moorabbin produced another in their second to lead until Port Melbourne levelled things up again in the fourth.

The Mariners scored another two in the fifth and took care of the rest defensively as the Panthers couldn’t find a run but still did well to restrict the Mariners to keep the two-run margin.

This loss is the Panthers' second in as many weeks and second of the season. It sees them give up the top spot to Williamstown as the Wolves have 92 runs scored compared to Moorabbin's 78 while the Mariners are eighth at 4-7.

Port Melbourne hosts the round 12 matchup.

Williamstown Wolves 8 v Mulgrave Rebels 7

Williamstown got the ball rolling in the second inning with five runs being batted in, the Rebels closing the margin to one during the following two digs.

The Wolves had another three-run inning in the fourth as Mulgrave kept pressing but fell just one short in the last dig of the game.
