2019/20 VSBL Season: Division Two Round One

The 2019/20 VSBL Division 2 season commenced on Sunday with plenty of awesome baseball action, including some close games and dominant victories. Moorabbin, Port Melbourne, Preston, Williamstown and Werribee emerged as winners in round one, setting the scene for a terrific summer season. There's ten teams chasing the coveted Division 2 premiership, and as the season unfolds there will be lots of great Victorian baseball to come. 


Division 2 Firsts


Doncaster Dragons vs. Williamstown Wolves

Williamstown gave up just one hit in a 10-0 win over Doncaster to kick off their Division 2 campaign.

 

Dennis Neal pitched five innings with 10 strikeouts to be noted with the win. 

 

In his only hit of the game, Kevin Desmedt connected sweetly to see the ball sail over the fence for a grand slam. Justin Gourley and Jayde Thorne each had three runs while Ian Jamieson also had three RBIs.

 

Brendan McDonald was the only Dragon to get a hit in his one at bat. Doncaster will be eager to pick up the pace offensively when round two rolls around this weekend.

Williamstown gave up just one hit in a 10-0 win over Doncaster to kick off their Division 2 campaign.

Mulgrave Rebels vs. Moorabbin Panthers

Mulgrave and Moorabbin played out in their first game of the season and it was the former Division 1 side who got the 13-2 win to start. 


Mulgrave scored one run either side of the game in the first and seventh inning, and in between that Moorabbin scored their 13 including four in the first and five in the fourth.


Moorabbin were playing well as a team as nine of their 12-man team recorded a run. Nick Coy led the way with three runs while Andrew Katz and Mich Barr had two. Barr got the perfect start, batting 1.000 with three hits from three at bats.

On the pitching side of things, Moorabbin kept the Rebels to two runs from seven hits as Zach Kamerman and Adam Harris pitched seven innings between them. 


Caleb Poole and Matt McKenna were the scorers for Mulgrave with Ricardo Anaya batting 1.000 as well. Riley O’Shea was the pick of the pitchers, not giving up a hit in 1.1 innings. 

Bonbeach Bluejays vs. Port Melbourne Mariners

Port Melbourne gave up two hits to Bonbeach but didn’t let anyone cross the plate as they shutout the Bluejays 6-0. 

Jim Crowe and Kris Bouker had one hit each on the offensive end, whereas on the defensive side of things Adam Shoppe and Mitchell Sheldon-Collins pitched four innings each with Shoppe giving up two earned runs.

 

Port Melbourne’s pitchers kept their opponents in the box, striking out Bonbeach’s batters 19 times over the course of the game. The Bluejays will look to avoid such high strikeouts and get their bats moving in their second game this weekend. 

St Kilda Saints vs. Preston Pirates

Preston had a nice win over St Kilda, the final score being 5-2.

 

Cam Deeble had a great start to the season with one hit bringing in two runs. Mitch Legge and Luke Williams were the other Pirates to record hits in the game.

 

Mitchel Heyward got the start and pitched through five innings, giving up one run from a base on balls, but contributed with two strikeouts, a third of the total strikeouts for Preston.


On Sunday St Kilda will look to record their first win in their return to Division 2 after awhile away.

Andrew Christou and Oliver Box paved the way for Werribee to beat Malvern to the tune of 7-3 on the opening weekend. 

Christou and Box recorded a game-high two hits apiece with Box’s pair of doubles bringing in a run and Christou making his way home twice. Wade Balzer also scored two runs.


The Giants got things started in the first inning when Josh Lee drew a walk with bases loaded to score one run. In the bottom of the first, Malvern tied things up at one when Ryan Dale singled on a 3-2 count to score one run.

 

Werribee pulled away for good with three runs in the fourth inning thanks largely to 2 RBIs for Box. The Giants went on to tally eight hits total in the game.


Joshua Lee started on the mound and pitched the Giants to victory. In five innings, he faced 23 batters with nearly a third of them striking out. Lee allowed just one run on five hits with those seven strikeouts. Wesley DeJong threw four innings in relief out of the bullpen. 


Chris Burke provided a bit of a spark for Malvern with three hits in five at-bats. He was responsible for two of the Braves’ three runs, with Jarryd Dale scoring the others. 


Mitchell Kennedy was the best of the Braves pitchers as he only gave up one run, had four strikeouts and didn’t give up any base on balls. Geoff Holland took the loss, giving up three hits and four runs over four innings with two strikeouts.

Division 2 Reserves

Mulgrave Rebels vs. Moorabbin Panthers

Moorabbin beat Mulgrave in comprehensive fashion, winning 8-2.

 

It came down to the last dig for Moorabbin. The team scored seven runs as they fought a victory after trailing 2-1 heading into that deciding dig. While they've proven they can come back to win, the Panthers will look to get off to a stronger start as they shoot for a 2-0 record on Sunday.


Moorabbin beat Mulgrave in comprehensive fashion, winning 8-2.

Bonbeach Bluejays vs. Port Melbourne Mariners

St Kilda prevailed over Preston in the first week of the season with a 12-1 win. The Reserves are enjoying their new season in Division 2 and will try and keep their momentum up as the season moves forward.

Werribee Giants vs. Malvern Braves

Malvern got started right away, jumping on the Giants from the outset and it resulted in a 15-1 win to the Braves.

 

Harry Garrett pitched 2 1/3 innings for the Giants and allowed two hits while striking out two Braves batters.

Although it was a close game right up to the end, Doncaster edged out the Wolves 9-8 for a thrilling start to the season. Williamstown will try and get the upper hand in the return game this weekend.

A nail-biting game that could’ve gone either way, Port Melbourne got over the top of Bonbeach 10-9.

 

Port Melbourne scored seven runs at the top of one and Bonbeach responded with six of their own coming through.

 

Strong defence was a highlight for the rest of the game with neither team certain to run away with more than one run an inning and in the end Bonbeach needed more than that one run at the bottom of the fifth.

Preston prevented a St Kilda comeback as they worked their way through the game and secured an exciting 9-5 victory to open up their season on the right note.

Malvern had strong outings in the first and third innings to take an 11-0 lead into the fourth when they scored another two.

Chris Brian went one for two with an RBI.

Geelong travelled to Bonbeach in Round 1 and won 12-9 to start their Division 2 season.

 

Bonbeach scored six runs in the first, showing their desire from the start and determination to lay a strong foundation in the game.

 

Geelong would spoil the party though, leading by one at middle three, but scores were tied by the bottom.

 

A grind in the fourth saw each team score one but Geelong’s four runs in the fifth was enough to steer them home.

Werribee knew when to bob up with necessary runs, and took a 7-2 lead into the third.

 

Malvern were able to peg the lead back by two runs before a six-run dig at bottom four put the result beyond repair for the Giants.

 

Werribee’s Chris Owen went 4-for-4 with 3 RBIs and two runs in the Giants win.
