AJLC2019 day three recap

Adelaide Rays, Northern Metros and Southern Mariners remain undefeated after day three of the 2019 Australian Junior League Championship on Tuesday.

The trio are in prime position heading into the final day of pool play with the top eight seeds after tomorrow’s action advancing to quarter-finals.

Pool play will continue at Glenelg Baseball Club (Anderson Ave, Glenelg) tomorrow before the tournament shifts back to West Beach on Thursday for the finals.

Newcastle Eagles 8, Canberra 5 | Box Score

Newcastle denied a Canberra comeback on day three of #AJLC2019, holding on for an 8-5 win on diamond two at Glenelg.

The Eagles surged to a 4-0 lead and extended their advantage to seven runs before Canberra rallied.

Canberra scored five of the last six runs in the game.

Tom Karnaghan hit an inside-the-park home run for Newcastle and Jackson Frame finished with three base hits.

Starter Jasper Brown notched five strikeouts.

William Page-Allen collected four punchouts in relief for Canberra.

 

Adelaide Rays 18, Western Comets 6 | Box Score

The Adelaide Rays improved their record to 2-0 at #AJLC2019 with a win over Western Comets in Pool C.

A nine-run second inning put the Rays in a strong position on their way to an 18-6 win on diamond one at Glenelg.

Lucas Burnell drove in four runs and Archie Lovelock and Lachlan Spratt both finished with three RBIs.

Taj Gosling drove in three runs on three hits for the Comets.

Western scored six runs in the top of the fifth to close within three runs before Adelaide finished strongly.

 

Northern Metros 13, Adelaide Seahawks 3 | Box Score

Northern Metros continued their unbeaten start to #AJLC2019 with a 13-3 win over Adelaide Seahawks in Pool B at Glenelg’s diamond two.

Steady offence powered the Metros to a 2-0 record with the WA charter scoring runs in each of the five innings they were up to bat.

Aden Browne collected three hits, including two home runs, to finish with five runs batted in.

Browne put the Metros on top with a two-run shot in the first and added another in the second.

Jacob Santich drove in a pair of runs.

Drew Davies had two runs batted in for Adelaide.

 

Southern Mariners 14, Gold Coast Cougars 4 | Box Score

Southern Mariners recorded a second win in as many attempts, topping Gold Coast Cougars 14-4.

The Mariners raced ahead 8-0 and responded when the Cougars hit the board in the fifth and sixth.

Lachlan Stevens homered for Southern and finished with two runs batted in, along with Tom Brookes and Thomas Yuile.

Starting pitcher Genevieve Beacom recorded fix strikeouts in two scoreless innings.

Charlie Pierson also finished the game with five punchouts.

Max Blair and Jaecob Arnott drove in runs for Gold Coast.

 

Macarthur 19, Brisbane Metro 3 | Box Score

Macarthur produced a strong hitting display to record its first win of #AJLC2019.

Blake Gooding’s inside-the-park homer helped Macarthur to a 19-3 win over Brisbane Metro on diamond two at Glenelg.

Gooding drove in four runs and Christopher Fergie, Jesse Toon, Adam Bates, Lachlan Bigwood and Mason McPhee each recorded two RBIs.

Starter Nicolas Poles struck out five Metro hitters.

Jock Millar had two hits and a run batted in for Brisbane.

 

Eastern Athletics 11, Illawarra 4 | Box Score

Eastern Athletics rode a seven-run fifth to an 11-4 win over Illawarra in the final game of day three at Glenelg.

Harrison Elustondo’s two-run homer highlighted the big inning for the Athletics, who picked up their first win.

James Squire recorded three hits for Eastern in an even team-effort on diamond one.

Mitchell Wheatley accounted for three of Illawarra’s hits.
