Seventy-five promising young baseball players will chase their big league dreams at the highly acclaimed MLB Australian Academy Program (MLBAAP) on the Gold Coast from 1st August.
The Academy, conducted in collaboration with Major League Baseball, was created in 2001 to help young baseball talent from Australia and the Oceania region develop the tools necessary to progress towards a career in professional baseball within the Major League Baseball system.
Since the program’s inception 15 years ago, 215 Academy graduates from 13 countries have gone on to sign professional contracts with MLB Clubs, with six Australian graduates making their Major League debut. The camp has been so successful the model has been replicated by MLB in Europe, China and even back in the United States.
Players prepare and train for pre camp conditioning over eight weeks with their State High Performance Academy and then report for camp (Aug 1st) for intensive training and games six days a week over three weeks under the guidance of former Major Leaguers and Team Australia coaching staff including Jon Deeble, Graeme Lloyd and Glenn Williams, with MLB scouts from several teams monitoring their progress.
In addition, five players from the MLB Development Centres in China will participate in the Academy. Earlier this month, Guiyuan “Itchy” Xu signed a minor league contract with the Baltimore Orioles to become the first player from a Development Centres to sign with a Major League Club. MLB has opened three Development Centres in China located in Changzhou, Nanjing and Wuxi. These Development Centres provide a world-class facility for talented Chinese student athletes in grades 7-12 that incorporate an innovative teaching model combining mainstream school curriculum with improving baseball skills.
