The 2019/20 Victorian Summer Baseball League got off to an excellent start this past weekend as seniors took to the field for the first round of the summer season.
The highly-anticipated Division 1 competition featured some surprise results and dominant performances, with reigning premiers Blackburn and Geelong cruising to comfortable victories and several teams pulling away with close wins. With round one complete, teams will look to find their groove and secure strong campaigns early on in the season.
Division 1 Firsts
Cheltenham Rustlers vs. Essendon Bombers
0 2
The Rustlers were kept quiet in their return to Division 1 after winning the 2018/19 VSBL Division 2 Championship. Essendon struggled last season, finishing with a 10-15-2 record for fifth place in the Western Conference, but they held strong on Sunday to put their first win on the board. Both teams had reliable pitching and the game was scoreless until the middle innings.
After seven Essendon led 2-0, and Cheltenham couldn't produce any runs to turn the game in their favor although Sam Michael hit a single and a double to get on base. In his first game for Essendon's top nine, 18-year-old Bailey Waterman picked up a safe hit and three walks.
The Rustlers will have the chance to even the score when they host Essendon for round two.
Berwick City Cougars vs. Geelong Baycats
1 6
Last year's runners up put together a great performance on Sunday, working their way to a five-run advantage over the Cougars. Now in their second season in Division 1, Berwick City tried but couldn't quite keep up with the Baycats bats.
Geelong took an early lead and never looked back. Kelli Zablan led the way with 3 RBI's on a soaring home run, while Rudy Jaramillo had two walks, a single and a pair of RBIs. Zablan and Jaramillo pitched well for the Baycats, as the team also relied on doubles from Ryan Darcy and Troy Snarey and a base hit by Josh Davies.
Berwick's Craig Barnett had a single and Jordan Bradley smashed a double while also covering two solid innings on the mound. Aiden Willis contributed two base hits and his team's lone RBI of the game. The Cougars will get their chance for redemption this Sunday as they strive to make the series 1-1.
Blackburn Orioles vs. Sandringham Royals
10 5
Blackburn got their title defence underway in commanding fashion away from home, beating Sandringham 10-5.
Blake Hodgson was exceptional on the mound to give Blackburn the win, pitching four innings and only giving up one run from three hits.
Jacob Evans had four at bats for the Orioles and got three hits, including two doubles. He had a team-high 3 RBIs to help Blackburn on their way to a crucial first victory. The Royals will look to get their bats swinging a bit more to keep up with the Burners in game two.
Upwey FTG Tigers vs. Sunshine Eagles
2 4
Upwey FTG and Sunshine played out in a close game, with the Eagles coming from behind, prevailing 4-2. The Tigers weren’t able to hold off a late Eagles surge, but it was a strong defensive matchup from each side nonetheless.
Jarrod Turner was great on the mound for Upwey FTG as he pitched four scoreless innings and gave up just the one hit. Travis Murphy had three hits in this debut game for the Tigers.
After such an exciting victory, Sunshine will look for a 2-0 start to the season on Sunday, while Upwey FTG will aim to battle hard and come out on top.

Riley Hill pitched seven innings for the Lions, ending the game with an ERA of 1.29.
Only two players recorded hits for Fitzroy – Jordan Walker and Daniel Huryn – the latter rounding third base on one of his two hits.
Fitzroy will hope to bridge the gap this weekend when they face Waverley again.
Melbourne Demons vs. Newport Rams
3 2
Melbourne Demons beat Division 1 newcomers Newport Rams in a close one, 3-2. The Demons went around the bases three times to edge the Rams in a tight matchup.
Bronson Neave was the guy who broke the deadlock at the top of the ninth. The 15-year-old debutant slid home after his first safe hit in Division 1.
Adam Pahos was clean on the mound for Melbourne. In 2.1 innings, he faced eight batters and didn’t give up any hits while striking out two batters.
Oliver McMahon had three singles from four at bats while Slade Squire was the only player for Melbourne to record a double.
Only two players got hits for Newport – Jason Jarvis and Jarod Berman – but the team kept disciplined in the box to try and make their way on base, something they will need to once again in game two and beyond.
Division 1 Reserves
Cheltenham Rustlers vs. Essendon Bombers
4 2
Although the first didn't get a win on the board, Cheltenham's seconds got the job done as they held on to a two-run lead over Essendon.
Berwick City Cougars vs. Geelong Baycats
2 0
Both teams worked hard to outlast the other, but Berwick City prevailed as they shut-out Geelong and produced just enough offence to pull ahead.
Blackburn Orioles vs. Sandringham Royals
5 3
In a back-and-forth battle, reigning premiers Blackburn had the upper hand. Their 5-3 win shows this tight-knit team may be a contender for a second straight championship flag.
Upwey FTG Tigers vs. Sunshine Eagles
7 2
Upwey FTG beat Sunshine with a five-run win, the final score being 7-2.
Mitch John threw a complete game as the defence got around their pitcher, but situational awareness when in the batter’s box was just as useful, especially as debutant Jordan Gavin had two RBIs.

Waverley held the Lions scoreless in this thirds matchup while the Wildcats themselves had nine cross the plate. Waverley will look to replicate this fine form in their upcoming game.

Sandringham Royals vs. Blackburn Orioles

A well-known Victorian player and Level 4 accredited coach, Marshall returns to lead the U18 Blue team for the third year in a row, building on the program’s success after winning the 2019 Gold Medal Game. Marshall has spent the past two years as the Southern Mariners Charter Head Coach, and he’s also worked closely with athletes in Baseball Victoria’s Development Pathway as an Aces Academy Coach. Marshall enjoyed 34 years with Preston Baseball Club, and his decades of playing and coaching experience has given him the necessary skills to push State Team athletes to perform at the highest level.
Under 16 Blue – Scott Meager
Scott has been coaching U16 State Teams since 2011, when he served as an assistant coach for the U16 White Team. As Head Coach of the U16 Blue team, his squad has won two silver medals in 2016 and 2019. Most recently, Scott was an assistant coach for the U12 World Cup Team and he also coached Aces Academy. He is a well-known player who has reached 300+ senior games for both Williamstown Wolves Baseball club (Victorian Summer Baseball League) and East Belmont Saints Baseball Club (Geelong Baseball Association). Scott once represented Victoria as a junior player, and his personal experience playing for State Teams has helped him connect with players and capitalise on their strengths.
Under 16 White – Ben Laux
A successful Junior League Coach for the Southern Mariners and the 2019 U18 White team Head Coach, Ben will serve as Head Coach of the U16 White Team for the 2020 Australian Youth Championships. He’s a fellow Aces Academy Coach, and Ben also has coaching experience as Moorabbin Panthers’ Club Coach, as well as U18 and U23 representative teams. Ben enjoys helping players reach their goals and giving them the tools and guidance they need to make the most of an opportunity to represent their state on the national stage.

Aspen McGovern is determined to make her baseball dreams come true. She has been striving toward her goals, one big baseball moment at a time. The enthusiastic and energetic 15-year-old brought home a bronze medal with the 2019 Victorian Youth Women’s Team in her first-time representing Victoria, and she is ready for another great summer season with Springvale Lions.
Growing up, she loved watching her brother play, and it wasn’t long before she made her way onto the diamond when she was 8 years old. Seven years later, her initial interest in the sport has blossomed into an undeniable love for the game, especially when she’s pitching or playing 1st and 2nd base. “I keep playing because I love the game and how it’s an individual game as much as it’s a team game,” Aspen said. “It’s as mental as much as it is physical. I’ve also made a lot of friends through the game so that keeps it fun, even when I’m in a slump.”
Aspen currently plays for East Belmont Saints of Geelong Baseball Association in the winter and Springvale Lions in the summer. “The women’s pathway in Geelong is slowly building, which is great to see, and the program at Springvale is awesome,” Aspen said. “The women involved are great players, coaches and mentors and are really encouraging to all players.”
Having such a strong support system gave Aspen the push she needed to challenge herself and try out for the State Team. She originally wasn’t planning on doing so, until her teacher convinced her to go for it. “I had nothing to lose, and I really owe it to her as it was one of the best experiences,” Aspen said. “The try outs were a little challenging but once I found out I made the team, I was over the moon.”
Leading up to the team’s big trip to Canberra for the 2019 Australian Youth Women’s Championships, Aspen enjoyed the intensity of the training sessions. “The coaches helped us get to the best standard we could,” Aspen said. “Before the tournament I was really nervous but my mum, dad and a few teachers were really supportive, and knowing they were all proud of me even if I didn't do well made it easier.”
Although the girls were nervous on opening day of the National Championships, they found their footing and came back to take out a third place finish. Aspen performed at her best throughout the tournament, focusing on her timing and her fielding, which she had worked hard on during training. “It was rewarding knowing I helped the team out.”
From recovering in the pool every day to stealing home to tie up the bronze medal game, the National Championships were full of highlights for Aspen. Although an injury kept her from playing much of the winter, she’s ready to take what she learned at the tournament and keep moving forward.
Looking ahead toward the future, Aspen wants to improve her batting and suit up for the State Team for the second time. “Hopefully I get to play for Victoria again and play a good summer and do well at school,” Aspen said.
While baseball fills up most of her time, Aspen also enjoys school, music, playing with her dogs and spending time with her family and friends. She has dedicated supporters who encourage her to try her best on and off the field. “Lots of people inspire me. I have mum and dad that are really supportive, teachers that help me and senior players I want to be like,” Aspen said.
Looking up to role models Shae Lilywhite, Simone Wearne and Mandi Avent, Aspen has been able to learn from them. “They have been incredible to watch,” Aspen said. “They are both so highly respected by everyone and they are a big reason as to why I play for Springvale.”
When she’s not playing baseball, Aspen can be found traveling across the country with her dad, checking out a variety of baseball games in a beloved tradition for the father-daughter duo. “I love watching the pros and learning from them, and the road trips with dad are pretty fun too,” Aspen said.
After such a terrific year, Aspen’s father Stewart McGovern hopes his daughter shoots for the stars. “Aspen had wanted to play for Victoria for a long time, and I was thrilled she made the team,” Stuart said. “Not once has baseball been a chore for her. She loves it – the games, the travel, the friends and the teammates. That makes it really enjoyable for me too. It’s never hard to go to the ballpark.”
