Two long-standing Victorian baseball clubs, Ballarat City Brewers and Mounties Youth Centre, have merged into a single entity and will now be known as Ballarat Royals Baseball Club, based at Prince of Wales Reserve in Gillies Street.
This is an exciting next step in the future of baseball in the Ballarat region, and the new club will get started right away, hosting this weekend’s Victorian Masters Baseball Carnival before the upcoming winter season as part of the Geelong Baseball Association.
Ballarat Royals will be focused on ensuring the continued growth of baseball in Ballarat, starting with a year-long presence. The club’s plans include fielding several senior teams in GBA this winter, as well as running a junior development program in the summer for Tee-Ball aged kids through to players 18 years old.
With distinctive colours – shades of purple lettering on black uniform tops – the Royals are eager to make new memories while recognising the lengthy history of the two original clubs. This joint effort and collaboration will allow for the Royals to reinvigorate local baseball in Ballarat while starting a new chapter, filled with potential and progress for the future.

The Warriors were unstoppable and undefeated this season, with 14 wins and 1 draw, but they fell just short of a premiership flag to cap it all off. Doncaster/Melbourne were the only team to tie with Wheelers Hill, going back to their 5-5 draw in round 6. Although they lost 5-4 to Wheelers Hill in their last meeting in round 15 on Feb 9th, Doncaster/Melbourne turned the tables with a two-run lead at the end of the game. Both teams battled hard, but ultimately the combined Dragons/Demons team prevailed for their thrilling premiership win, a well-earned result to round off a dedicated season.

The Lions lost two out of three regular season games against Doncaster, but they put on one of their best performances to win the Grand Final. It didn't take long, with Springvale jumping out to an early 7-2 lead by the top of the 3rd inning. As the top of the 5th, rolled around, they had stretched their lead to a massive 18-5 advantage. Doncaster's pitching and hitting struggled to battle back, but regardless of the final result, both teams displayed respectable comradery and friendship throughout the entire season. Next year is looking bright for both clubs as they continue to grow and further their development.

The Bombers pulled off the ultimate feat: snapping Springvale's streak of six-straight premierships with a close yet convincing win! Springvale won all but two games in the regular season, while Essendon went 10-8, but the Bombers certainly put forth their best effort on Grand Final Saturday to bring home the premiership.
Springvale started standout pitcher Gabby Bevan, while Essendon had last season's MVP Abbey Kelly on the mound. Essendon started things off strong with a 1-0 lead in the 3rd, but in the 6th Springvale turned things around with a 3-1 advantage. The Bombers made a break in the 7th, bringing home their fifth run that would be enough to win the game. After six consecutive premierships and another amazing season, the Lions gave up the shield to the a very deserving Bombers team. Congratulations to both teams on such awesome performances!

The 2018/19 VSBL season concluded in thrilling fashion with two teams clinching their respective premierships. In the Division 2 game, Cheltenham Rustlers got the job done in a close battle against Newport Rams, while the Division 1 clash saw reigning premiers Geelong Baycats go down to a strong Blackburn Orioles team. Congratulations to the premiers Blackburn and Cheltenham, as well as the runners-up on their amazing accomplishments!

Newport Rams vs. Cheltenham Rustlers
0 2
After a convincing win on Thursday night when the Rustlers broke through with a couple of late runs, Cheltenham returned to Melbourne Ballpark on a beautiful Saturday afternoon to seal the deal. The score remained 0-0 as both sides were in top form, and it wasn't until the Rustlers got a few runners on base in the 8th that they were able to grab the lead with a clutch hit. Newport had some remarkable plays and solid hits to be very proud of, but ultimately they just couldn't score when they really needed to.
The Rustlers' star pitcher Jesse Remington handled all 9 innings on the mound, throwing 27 first-pitch strikes and recording 12 strikeouts. Newport's David Asp wasn't far behind, with 17 first-pitch strikes and two strikeouts in 7.1 innings. Talented junior Nikau Pouaka-Grego made an impressive appearance in relief, but the Rams lineup struggled to produce a huge hit to turn the game in their favour.
Jackson Hunkin had two hits on the day for Cheltenham, including an RBI, and Kane Davidson knocked in the other run. Dean Malthouse had a pair of hits for Newport.
Congratulations, Rustlers on an outstanding season to secure their return to Division 1 next year!

Blackburn Orioles vs. Geelong Baycats

After a close game on Tuesday that saw the Burners shutout the Orioles 2-0, this was a make-it-or-break it game for the reigning premiers. Unfortunately for Geelong, a few big hits for Blackburn saw them take an early lead. One run in the 1st on a sacrifice fly and another in the 4th put the Orioles in good shape, and the Baycats weren't able to answer.
Two more runs in the 6th inning sealed Blackburn's fate, and although Geelong's Kelli Zablan sent one over the fence in the final inning, their comeback goals were left unfulfilled. Blackburn had seven hits on the day compared to Geelong's three, and starting pitcher Andrew Jones was fantastic for the Burners, throwing 7.1 innings with seven strikeouts. The Baycats had Rudy Jarramillo on the mound for six innings, and he recorded 18 first-pitch strikes and two strikeouts.
Luke Hughes was named the Division 1 Grand Final MVP after smashing a double and a home run for 2 RBI's, and David Dicker also had two timely hits to keep things moving for Blackburn. 20 years after they earned their first premiership flag, Blackburn has done it again and their fans and families couldn't be happier!
Congratulations to Blackburn on being the 2018/19 Division 1 premiers, and well done to runners-up Geelong Baycats!

March 8th is International Women’s Day, and Baseball Victoria is getting involved by celebrating women’s baseball and showcasing some of the finest female teams in Victorian baseball.
Cheltenham Rustlers Baseball Club has stepped up to the plate to host Women’s Super Saturday on March 9th, where three thrilling Grand Finals will take place.
This spectacular display of talented and dedicated women’s baseball players will begin with the Women’s Division 3 game at 10am as Wheelers Hill takes on Doncaster/Melbourne, followed by the Division 2 game at 1pm between Springvale and Doncaster.
Women’s Division 1 will round out the day as Springvale chases a seventh-straight premiership against Essendon, with the first pitch at 3:30pm. Super Saturday is the perfect opportunity to see some of Victoria’s best women’s players take the field as they aim for Grand Final glory. The Cheltenham baseball community is excited about hosting the event, and they’re looking forward to the big day.
“Cheltenham Rustlers is extremely supportive of women's baseball and the Club is proud to have been selected by Baseball Victoria to host the Women's Super Saturday event,” said Denise Healy, Cheltenham Club Secretary. “It's a great initiative to have all of the women's grand finals on the one day at the one location so we can collectively support and celebrate the teams and the competition as a whole.”
Supporters and spectators are encouraged to come down, as they’ll get to watch quality, competitive baseball while enjoying a lively atmosphere with music, delicious food, drinks and even a special coffee station.
By creating a successful event, Denise and the rest of the Cheltenham Rustlers hope to do their part in supporting the success of women’s baseball, both now and in the future. “Women’s baseball is really important. It is not acceptable for sport to be exclusive to men’s competitions only – those days should be long gone,” Denise said. “We need to be supportive and encouraging women of all ages to participate in a welcoming and friendly sporting environment.”
A player herself, Denise believes it’s important to establish a safe and welcoming culture that combines sport with community and friendship. “It’s about women having the avenue to pursue their own interests, and encouraging each other to take time out from their routines and busy lives to enjoy a few hours of fun each week,” Denise said.
Ultimately, seeing the local community come out to support women’s baseball is fantastic, especially for a grass-roots, community driven club like Cheltenham. “We’ve always been focused on serving the people living within our community, and being involved in Baseball Victoria’s women’s competition for the past few years has allowed our club to better serve that purpose,” Denise said. “Cheltenham has a long and proud history of having strong junior and men’s senior divisions and we have now added to that to create a much more rounded, and I believe, balanced community sporting club.”
Although Cheltenham’s Women’s Division 3 team lost in the preliminary finals after finishing in the top four, the club is still eager to turn out and watch some familiar faces play for premiership flags. It’s all part of the Victorian baseball community’s efforts to continue growing women’s baseball, and ensuring there are ample opportunities for women to get involved in our beloved game.
“I certainly hope that we can continue to develop the competition, not only in Melbourne but throughout the broader Victorian community,” Denise said. “My mantra is, you’re never too old (or young) to give it a go!”
If you want to head down and support Women’s Super Saturday, games will begin at 10am at Cheltenham Baseball Club, located at Kingston Heath Reserve on Farm Road.

VSBL Division 3 teams have been working toward this moment all season long, and there were some surprise results in the 1sts and 2nds as one team in particular, Pakenham Pumas, pulled off an amazing upset before going on to win the premiership. Well done to all these teams on their fantastic efforts this season!
Division 3 Firsts - Grand Final (Sunday, 3rd March)
Ormond Glenhuntly - Blue vs. Pakenham Pumas
3 7
7 runs seems to be the new magic number for Pakenham, as this run total has sealed the deal for two of their massive victories over tough competitors in the finals. This marks the second Puma-powered surprise in as many weeks, with both huge wins coming on the road.
As the Pumas battled against last year's premiers, the determination on both sides was abundantly clear. The game was tied at 1-1 heading into the 4th inning, and that's when the Pumas loaded the bases for Shaun Fahy. A reliable hitter all season along, he came in clutch with a picture-perfect grand slam, raising their spirits and blowing the game wide open. As it turns out, this was Fahy's first ever grand slam, and it couldn't have come at a better time.
The Hunters never recovered from the big deficit, and pitcher Trent Job kept it all under control once again. It's a wonderful end to a season in which the Pumas never gave up hope, even with unavailable players, tough losses and more. Well done to Pakenham on a super strong finish they'll remember for years to come.

Division 3 Reserves - Grand Final (Sunday, 3rd March)
St Kilda Saints vs. Ormond Glenhuntly - Blue
11 1
Last year's premiership winners cruised to another Grand Final victory as they got the better of the Hunters, a team they won twice and lost two games against during the regular 18 rounds. St Kilda's big bats had managed a 10-0 lead by the 6th inning, as they continually pressured the Hunters both offensively and defensively. The Saints were in a celebratory mood as they secured their second straight premiership, and their third in four years, in front of a supportive and enthusiastic home crowd.

Ormond Glenhuntly-Blue vs. Chelsea Dolphins

The reigning premiers will have a chance for back-to-back Grand Final victories after beating the Dolphins on Sunday. Ormond won 2 out of their 3 regular season games, and they put the pressure on this time around with some hard-hit balls and timely offensive production. After a big surprise in the other semi final, the Hunters will not face their undefeated rivals in the Grand Final but rather a team they've beaten 2 out of 3 times thus far this season.

The Saints were certainly a favourite heading into this game, considering they went 18-0 in the regular season and outscored the Pumas 45-8 in their three meetings. Yet Pakenham pulled off one of their best performances of the year, surprising St Kilda and showing their fans a stunning showcase of everything the team has to offer.
Starting pitcher Trent Job threw 9 innings for the win, and the Pumas worked their way to a 4-0 lead in the first few innings. While the Saints offense regrouped and got their scoring started eventually, it wasn't enough to save the game and they ended up down by two runs.
The Pumas, who last won the premiership in 2015/16, now have the momentum of this beautiful win on their shoulders, a fantastic result after a so-so 9-9 season that saw them finish fourth. There's the possibility that the Pumas may just pull of a remarkable premiership victory if they can hold their own against the Hunters.
