Round 8 Recaps

Port Melbourne Mariners vs. Malvern Braves 1sts

2                                                     4

After a great 6-2 win on Sunday, the Braves carried on with their winning ways as they narrowly topped the Mariners in the first midweek game of the season. Now, they’ll have a chance for the sweep as they look ahead to their round 9 game. Chance Taylor Hicks looked good on the mound, while Gavin Woolger led the way with his bat and base running. Hicks threw six innings, giving up four hits and two runs with eight strikeouts. Port Melbourne will try to avoid a disappointing sweep when Sunday comes around.

Springvale Lions vs. Werribee Giants 1sts

0                                   5

Wesley DeJong didn't allow a single run against the Lions, throwing a complete game shutout and leading the Giants to a 5-0 victory on Thursday night. Werribee opened up the scoring in the 1st inning when Wade Balzer drew a walk, scoring one run.

One bright spot for the Lions was a single by Lachlan Madden in the 2nd inning, as well as standout American import Anna Kimbell who went 2-for-3. Otherwise the majority of the offense belonged to Werribee, led by Jon Lowe who went 2-for-4. The Giants also stole seven bases during the game, with the Balzer brothers earning two apiece.

DeJong earned the victory on the hill for the Giants. He surrendered zero runs on four hits over seven innings, striking out nine. Rydge Hogan took the loss for the Lions. He allowed five hits, 5 walks and four runs over five innings, striking out four. Game 3 on Sunday will be at Werribee.

Mulgrave Rebels vs. Cheltenham Rustlers 1sts

1                                    2

The Rustlers kept their unbeaten streak alive with their eighth straight win, narrowly beating the Rebels for a 2-0 series lead. Mulgrave was in the game the whole time, but unfortunately, they couldn’t quite piece together that extra offense to avoid their seventh loss of the season. Andrew Campbell was once again solid on the mound for Cheltenham, throwing five innings in which he gave up four hits and one run while striking out three. The Rebels will look ahead to Sunday as they try to prevent a four-game losing streak.

Williamstown Wolves vs. Doncaster Dragons 1sts

1                                              2

In what seems to be the story of the season, the Wolves once more just couldn’t quite manufacture enough offense to steal the lead from the Dragons and get their second win, which they’ve been searching for since round 3. Williamstown shows lots of positives and certainly stayed in the game, but in the end Doncaster took home the win. After a string of recent wins the Dragons have improved to 4-4 and found their way to third spot on the ladder.

Bonbeach Bluejays vs. Newport Rams 1sts

1                                        3

In a much calmer and more controlled game than Sunday’s rout of the Bluejays, the Rams pulled off their eighth consecutive win after an exciting pitcher’s duel. Both teams showed pitching strength, with Newport’s winning pitcher Riley Barr allowing just three hits and one run while striking out seven and walking zero.

David Land scored two runs for the Rams on a single in the 1st, but otherwise the Rams offense was quieted down a bit, with six hits on the night, including two apiece to Land and Justin Gil. Matt Prior took the loss for Bonbeach after surrendering three runs on six hits across seven innings, along with five strikeouts.

Newport’s defense was on point, with Nathan Smith covering a lot of ground in right field to make a stunning catch. It was a tough loss for Bonbeach as they were close but not quite close enough to their first victory of the season, and they’ll be looking to avoid a sweep on Sunday.

Round 7 Recaps

Cheltenham Rustlers vs. Mulgrave Rebels 1sts

6                                         2

The Rustlers were solid once again as they secured their seventh straight victory. Mulgrave was rejected once more in their search for a second win, but their starter Thomas Ondra was reliable for most of his innings and settled down after some early trouble. He ended up throwing eight innings, giving up four earned runs and two unearned runs while striking out six. Cheltenham plated five of their runs in the 2nd and 3rd, with the Rebels getting their only runs in the 4th with a 2-RBI single from Chris Anderton.

A bit of back and forth between the two teams in the back half of the game wasn’t enough for Mulgrave to answer in the closing innings, and Cheltenham was rewarded for their efforts with win number seven, extending their sweet start to the season for yet another week. Some of the biggest contributors on the Cheltenham side includes a pair of singles for Jackson Hunkin, a double and single from both Andrew Gibbens and Sam Michael, and an RBI single from Conor Myles. These two teams will meet again at Mulgrave on Thursday night.

Cheltenham Rustlers vs. Mulgrave Rebels 2nds

4                                         0

A quiet day at the plate doomed the Rebels, who just couldn’t seem to put together any solid scoring opportunities against the seasoned Rustlers pitching staff. This marks Cheltenham’s sixth win on the season, and their fourth shutout victory in the first seven games alone. With solid pitching and determined team hitters, the Rustlers are shaping up to be one of the final four if they can hold steady. Mulgrave is currently sitting in second-to-last place on the ladder with one win, five losses and one draw thus far, but if they can pick up their offense and rebound when Cheltenham come to visit this weekend, anything is possible.

Cheltenham Rustlers vs. Mulgrave Rebels 3rds

10                                       1

In game one of the series, the Rustlers exerted the same dominance we’ve seen all season long, allowing them to improve to a 6-1 record to stay in their comfortable spot at the top of the ladder alongside Springvale. Cheltenham was on-point offensively and in the field, with a pitching staff that easily retired Mulgrave batters without any big dramas. The Rebels are now 4-3 after losing two of their last three, and they will be eager to get back in the win column when they host the Rustlers on Sunday.

Cheltenham Rustlers vs. Mulgrave Rebels 4ths

13                                       2

The Rustlers cruised to an easy and convincing win over the Rebels to achieve big back-to-back wins. After starting the season on a high note with a 3-0 winning streak, the Rebels have dropped four games in a row, a disappointing trend they’d love to turn around this weekend. With only two runs scored in each of their past two games, Mulgrave will need to manufacture more offensively to stand a chance against this Cheltenham side that has scored more than 10 runs in five of their seven games.

Bonbeach Bluejays vs. Newport Rams 1sts

4                                      23

The Bluejays just can't seem to catch a break as they were handed their seventh straight loss by a hard-hitting Rams team. Starter Tim Bellerby had a tough day on the mound, and defensive miscues didn’t help as took the loss after giving up 14 hits and 15 runs across three innings.

Newport’s Cam Lyons was fantastic at the plate, driving in five runs on three hits, including singles in the 2nd and 4th and a blazing triple in the 5th.  Outstanding junior player Nikau Pouaka-Grego wasn’t far behind, going 4-for-5 and nearly hitting for the cycle, only missing out on a home run after collecting a triple, double and single. At just 14 years old, he’s definitely leaving his mark on the Div 2 competition.

The Bluejays’ weren’t completely silenced, as they jumped on some scoring chances in the second to tally four runs. Unfortunately, that’s all they could produce as the rest of the offense belonged to the Rams. Dean Malthouse singled on the first pitch he took in the opening frame, and he ended up being the first of three to score in the top of the 1st. Newport quickly added six runs in the 2nd and 3rd with huge RBI hits from Malthouse, Justin Gil, Jared Berman, Nathan Smith and James Walshe.

David Asp once again proved to be reliable and consistent on the mound, earning the win for the Rams after throwing five scoreless innings during which he allowed just three hits while striking out three. He was supported by the unstoppable Newport offense, which racked up 22 hits on the day, including four from Malthouse alone. Riley Barr joined Gil, Lyons and Walshe with multiple hits on the day.

The Rams will look to keep up the pace in the rest of the series, while the Bluejays will be keen to turn things around and get that highly-desired first win of the season to get them off that dreaded spot at the bottom of the ladder. Thursday night’s midweek game will be played at Melbourne Ballpark in Altona while the return game will take place at Newport on Sunday.

Bonbeach Bluejays vs. Newport Rams 2nds

0                                      24

The result was even worse for Bonbeach in the 2nds as they were pummeled by a Newport offense that never stopped. It’s been a tough season so far for the winless Bluejays, who haven’t had much to offer offensively against some pretty strong pitching, having been outscored 102 – 3. That being said, Bonbeach has opened the season by facing the top three teams in the division in Cheltenham, Werribee and Newport, so they should be looking forward to their next series against familiar opponents at Mulgrave. Six wins and one draw put Newport tied with Werribee in the top spot, so the next series when they face off against one another should be very interesting. Bonbeach travels to Newport this weekend to see if they can turn things around at all and pull off a sweet surprise win.

Bonbeach Bluejays vs. Newport Rams 3rds

5                                      29

Newport’s stinging sweep of Bonbeach continued with a crazy busy day of offense for the Rams in the 3rds. They sailed through the game, racking up run after run on big hits and defensive miscues that further dented the Bluejays’ game-day confidence. For a team that was riding high on back-to-back wins after a slow start to the season, this wasn’t the final result they wanted, but Bonbeach still shows plenty of potential and they just need to regroup and come back stronger this weekend at Newport.

Bonbeach Bluejays vs. Newport Rams 4ths

9                                      11

This was a highly competitive matchup in which both sides never game up, and stayed in it the whole way through. Bonbeach was enjoying an 8-3 lead when Newport junior Bradley Blakemore came into pitch in his second game of the day, and he absolutely amazed the crowd by striking out nine of the next 16 batters to give up only two runs across three innings. His team rallied behind his reliable pitching and managed to turn a five-run deficit into a two-run lead as the game finished. This was a fantastic team effort the 5-2 Rams can be very proud of, and carry into Sunday’s home game.

Springvale Lions vs. Werribee Giants 1sts

4                                  13

For the first time this season the Giants were kept to a slow start as all nine batters were retired easily in the first three innings. As they always do, Werribee got their offense firing before long, scoring three in the 4th, one in the 5th, one in the 6th and two in the 7th to secure a lead 10-1 going into the final two innings.

Werribee weathered a scare in the 8th inning by giving up three runs, but they bounced back to score another three of their own in the 9th to get their eighth straight victory. Josh Lee got the win for the Giants after giving up just four hits and one run across six innings. Guillermo Salazar threw three innings in relief out of the bullpen.

Lucas Anderson took the loss for the Lions. He went five innings, allowing four runs on four hits and striking out five. On the day, Werribee collected 12 hits, thanks to Balzer, Salazar, Jon Lowe and Trent Pantalleresco leading the way with multiple hits. Balzer went 3-for-5 with two singles and a double, while Salazar had a two-run home run in the 6th to add to Werribee’s excitement. Oliver Box and Ryan Balzer had keen eyes at the plate, recording 3 walks a piece.

Despite the final score, the Lions offense was more productive than in previous weeks with the lineup putting together 10 hits, thanks in large part to multiple hits from Anderson, Rydge Hogan, Liam Madden, Adam Thatcher, and Lucas Price. Now 1-6, Springvale will have another shot at their highly-anticipated second win of the year when they play Werribee again on Thursday at Melbourne Ballpark.

Springvale Lions vs. Werribee Giants 2nds

3                                   12

Despite a neck-and-neck 1-1 tie going into the 4th inning, the Lions started giving up more hits and runs to the determined Giants, and by the time the top of the 6th rolled around, Werribee was up 7-2. The Giants would manage five more runs, while the Lions got only one more. This marks Werribee’s sixth win of the season, and their fourth straight since a draw back in round 3 at Mulgrave. Springvale now has three wins, three losses and one draw on the season, and they will be eager to get one back after Sunday’s tough loss.

Springvale Lions vs. Werribee Giants 3rds

15                                 4

The Giants racked up 15 runs for the fourth time this season. The reigning premiers are fans of huge leads and scoring innings that seem to never end, as they’ve now won games with final scores of 16-6, 23-2, 16-2 and 15-4. Springvale now has six wins and one draw, giving them a lot of momentum heading into this weekend’s game two at Werribee. The Giants will be keen to turn their 2-5 record into 3-5.

Malvern Braves vs. Werribee Giants 4ths

12                                15

Both sides were relentless at the plate, with the Giants eventually coming out on top despite the Braves’ best efforts. It was a beautiful day for baseball at Wadsworth Park as a record turnout for Malvern’s 4ths, including a lineup of 11 players and Vice President Rick Romanin, led a touching Armistice Day silence. The Rebels were batting well in the first two innings, with four runs in the 1st and seven runs in the 2nd while holding the Giants at bay. This didn’t last long, however, as Werribee soon added three runs before putting up a damaging 12-run frame in the 4th, leading to their second win of the year. The return game at Werribee should be another intense competition between these two teams.

Port Melbourne Mariners vs. Malvern Braves 1sts

2                                                    6

The Braves were looking to bounce back after being dominated by the Rams in round 6, especially against the Mariners considering they lost a few tight contests last season. Malvern went hard in the 1st with back-to-back singles for Nic Unland and Billy Findlay before Chance Hicks drove in a run with a hit of his own. Mitch Wilhite followed up, giving the Braves a two-run advantage.

Simon Fitzmaurice was on the bump for the Braves and the boys threw the ball around in the 1st, giving the Mariners the chance to get two of their own. Despite the wobbly 1st inning, Malvern’s defense was solid for the rest of the game. From then on out, Malvern stepped it up a notch, roughing up the Mariners’ import and getting more runs on the board. Fitzmaurice continued his strong pitching performance, throwing seven innings with no earned runs. Port Melbourne’s relievers were solid, but Malvern still managed to tack on some more runs thanks to RBI’s from Lachlan Fuda and Geoff Holland. Chance Hicks closed the door with a two-inning save.

Thursday’s midweek game at Port Melbourne will see Malvern hoping to take a 2-0 series lead, while the Mariners try to avoid a two-game skid.

Port Melbourne Mariners vs. Malvern Braves 2nds

7                                                    15

A late lead allowed the Braves to defeat the Mariners for their third win. The game was tied at seven with Malvern batting in the top of the 5th when Jonte DeZwart doubled on a 2-0 count, scoring two runs and giving the Braves some added momentum to push ahead and keep scoring. Malvern went on to score five runs in the 6th inning, thanks to singles from Hubert Lau and Taylor Field, a groundout by Matt May and a fielder's choice by Jack Hangar.

Eddie Gibbs earned the win for Malvern after throwing six innings, giving up seven runs on six hits with eight strikeouts. Field went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the team in hits, and three Braves players stole at least two bases on the day. Chris Godfrey managed to steal four bases on the day.

Malvern will look to continue building on this strength as they look ahead to round 8 while Port Melbourne hopes to bounce back and get their first win of the season.

Malvern Braves vs. Port Melbourne Mariners 3rds

9                                  4

The Braves were solid on Sunday, earning their third victory on the season thanks in large part to a great start from Carlo Spadazzi. The Mariners lost their sixth straight game after starting the season off with a win in round 1. Port Melbourne will be eager to switch things up this Sunday, while Malvern will go for back-to-back victories.

Williamstown Wolves vs. Doncaster Dragons 1sts

7                                             9

The Wolves were so close to their second win, but they let their chance for a breakthrough slip away as they fell to Doncaster in their sixth loss of the season. Williamstown’s import pitcher Dennis Neal was in fine form on the mound, holding the Dragons at bay. It wasn’t until a 7th- inning pitching frame that Doncaster truly seized the opportunity to transform a six-run deficit into a two-run advantage.

Letting the game get away from them was disappointing from Williamstown, who haven’t had the same early-season success they saw at this time last year.  Once Doncaster started hitting hard, there was no stopping the Dragons on their way to their third victory after a slow start to the season that saw them drop to 0-3.

Nick Gray and Justin Gourlay had hits for Williamstown, while Doncaster’s Brendan McDonald sent a three-run homer over the fence in the 8th as the leadoff batter. The Wolves will have two more chances to redeem themselves against Doncaster on Thursday night and Sunday.

Williamstown Wolves vs. Doncaster Dragons 2nds

12                                           3

The Wolves cruised to their fifth win of the season over the Dragons, who dropped their second straight game. Williamstown’s offense was much stronger this time around than last week, when they managed just one run against Cheltenham. Doncaster will look to bounce back as they host Williamstown at home on Sunday.

Doncaster Dragons vs. Williamstown Wolves 3rds

6                                        10

Both teams relied on their offense to get the job done, with the Wolves coming out on top in a successful effort to get their third win of the year. Doncaster has dropped to 2-5 and will aim to avoid a three-game losing streak when Sunday rolls around.

Doncaster Dragons vs. Williamstown Wolves 4ths

1                                        11

The Wolves are proving to be the toughest competition in the 4ths as they won their sixth game of the season over a quiet Dragons side. Doncaster has slipped to 4-3 and will try to stay above .500 as round 8 draws near.

The VSBL 2018/19 Division 3 competition is heating up as last year’s top teams St. Kilda and Ormond Glenhuntly – Blue have jumped out to fantastic starts, while Chelsea and Pakenham are looking to continue with their winning ways and improve their records. North Western and Ormond Glenhuntly – Gold are struggling but show plenty of potential, so it may be just a matter of time before they pick up the pace and make some big moves in the race for a premiership title. There’s lots of baseball left to be played this summer, so good luck to everyone in Division 3 and let’s continue making this the best season yet!

Round 7 Recaps

Pakenham Pumas vs. North Western Titans 1sts

13                                   1

The Titans’ troubles continued as they faced a tough Pakenham side, which came out highly motivated to secure their third win of the season. Despite the efforts of the club’s first-ever import, Ben Trudel, who is versatile with his reliable pitching command and fielding abilities, North Western lost their fourth straight. This Sunday will see both of these teams hit the road, with Pakenham paying a visit to Chelsea and North Western heading out to Ormond Glenhuntly to face the 0-7 Gold side.

Chelsea Dolphins vs. St. Kilda Saints 1sts

2                                    6

After a phenomenal day at the plate in round 6 that saw the Dolphins bring home a crazy 28 runs, things were much quieter. Chelsea put up just two runs on the day, held down by a strong and sensible Saints side that pitches and fields very well. With a lineup featuring the likes of Paul Puskar, Alan Ortiz, Robert Lewis and more, it was always going to be a tough test for Chelsea to stop the undefeated Saints from scoring. Franco Caramia had two singles on the day, while Mariano Favia had two as well, including a double. A two-run homer for Lewis certainly a highlight of St. Kilda’s performance, which they will hope to build on as they host Ormond Glenhuntly – Blue on Sunday.

The Saints 2nds side enjoyed a bigger smashing, putting up 15 runs while holding the Dolphins to a lone run. This weekend’s game will be an interesting matchup as the top two teams meet once again, as St. Kilda hopes to get the better of the undefeated Ormond Glenhuntly – Blue side. 3-4 Chelsea hosts a winless Pakenham side.

Ormond Glenhuntly Blue vs. Ormond Glenhuntly Gold 1sts

11                                                 0

Last season’s premiers kept up their fine form as they secured yet shutout win, their third straight victory in which they completely denied their opponents any runs. OGH – Blue has racked up 18 runs over these past three games, showing that their offence and pitching is firing on all cylinders. Meanwhile the OGH – Gold side continues to struggle, having managed just one run in the past four games. Next up for the 6-1 Blue team is their fierce competition over at St. Kilda, while the Gold team will look to get their first win at home vs. North Western Titans.

In the 2nds, the Blue team celebrated a 16-0 shutout victory, keeping the trend of scoreless innings alive. They have scored at least 10 runs in all but one game so far this season, so the next meeting with St. Kilda will be an entertaining one to say the least.

Round 6 Recaps

The hits just kept coming for Chelsea as they cruised to their biggest victory yet this season, improving their record to 4-2. Now sitting at 1-5, the Titans will try to turn things around at Pakenham, while Chelsea will face a challenge when the undefeated Saints come to visit.

Round 5 Recaps

St. Kilda Saints vs. North Western Titans 1sts

13                              3

The Saints were on fire once again as they cruised to their fifth straight victory, thanks in large part to some heavy hitting throughout the lineup and reliable pitching performances. North Western’s offence was pretty quiet once again, with the exception of Nick Jarvis with a 2-RBI single and an RBI double from Canadian import player Ben Trudel. Otherwise it was the Saints’ day at the plate, as Mariano Favia smashed two doubles and a single to get on base and score three times.  Franco Caramia had two singles and a double for 1 RBI, while Roland Curiel and Nigel Burrows both hit two singles and a double for 2 RBI’s apiece.

Singles from Satoro Adachi, Robert Lewis, Rob Mescher and Paul Paskar also made a dent, while Alan Ortiz continued his hitting streak with a double and a single to bring around two runners. Now 5-0, St. Kilda will look to carry this momentum onwards, while North Western will aim to return to their winning form in round 6.

St. Kilda Saints vs. North Western Titans 2nds

22                              0

The hard-hitting Saints lineup smashed their way to a massive win over a Titans side that has now back-to-back games. North Western looked good in their round 3 win over Ormond Glenhuntly – Gold, but have since been coming up with hardly anything offensively to get on the board. The Saints are happy to improve to 3-2 after a somewhat rocky start, and they will try to continue this offensive onslaught in the next round and beyond.

Chelsea Dolphins vs. Ormond Glenhuntly Blue 1sts

0                                     1

The normally unstoppable OGH – Blue offense was kept to a minimum in round 5, thanks to the dedicated efforts of Chelsea pitching staff. In fact, the lone run came on an RBI from Jason Maxwell. Chelsea couldn’t quite get anything on the board, resulting in their second loss of the season after back-to-back wins in rounds 3 and 4. OGH – Blue extends their winning streak to five games as they look ahead to their round 6 clash with Pakenham, while Chelsea will head to Melton for a visit to North Western.

Chelsea Dolphins vs. Ormond Glenhuntly Blue 2nds

2                                     18

There was a lot more action at the plate in the 2nds as OGH – Blue jumped out to a huge advantage to secure their fifth straight win. Chelsea drops to 2-3 as the Dolphins look to regroup and reenergize their bats ahead of round 6.

Ormond Glenhuntly Gold vs. Pakenham 1sts

0                                                   8

After last week’s 5-11 loss at home to St. Kilda, Pakenham was determined to get back in the win column, and that they did with a solid offensive performance. The Hunters couldn’t hold down the fort, and once again they succumbed to a tough shutout loss, their third in the first five rounds. Sitting at the bottom of the ladder isn’t where OGH – Gold want to be, and they will try again this weekend to get their first win and shake things up. With a 2-3 record, Pakenham will aim for more dominance as they settle into the season.

Ormond Glenhuntly Gold vs. Pakenham 2nds

10                                                 5

The Hunters had a reason to celebrate after they won their third game of the season, putting them tied for second place with St. Kilda. After last week’s narrow one-run victory over Chelsea, the Hunters were pleased to put some distance between them and Pakenham. The Pumas have yet to get a win, with four losses and one draw, but this could all change in round 6.

Round 4 Recaps

Ormond Glenhuntly – Gold vs. Chelsea Dolphins 1sts

0                                                      13

The Hunters didn’t have much of a chance against this strong, seasoned Chelsea side that’s been hitting well so far this season. The entire lineup performed well, with Rhys Tippett stroking a 2-RBI double and Shane Jeffrey batting in three runs of his own. Mitch Bowen and Daniel Wong had RBI singles while Wilson Yeh had an RBI double. Steve Tourtsakis and Seongjoo Nam also get involved in the fun with several singles. This fantastic finish for Chelsea improves their record to 3-1, putting them in second place alongside Ormond Glenhuntly – Blue ahead of their round 5 meetup.

Ormond Glenhuntly – Gold vs. Chelsea Dolphins 2nds

12                                                     11

In a wild game of back-and-forth baseball, the Hunters ended up on top despite a commendable effort from the Dolphins. This hard-fought result gives OGH – Gold their second win of the season, while Chelsea slips to a 2-2 record. Next time these two face off will be one to watch, and that’s in round 9 on Nov. 25.

North Western Titans vs. Ormond Glenhuntly – Blue 1sts

5                                             19

After their huge 22-16 victory over OGH – Gold in round 3, the Titans were feeling good offensively heading into this game. However, the blue side has much more dominant pitching, which significantly quieted Titans’ bats. They managed to piece together five runs, thanks to a 2-RBI single from Ben Trudel, as well as hits from Kyle Hodgett, Nick Jarvis, Matthew Martin, Kyle Newman and Daniel Taylor. Unfortunately for the Titans, that’s all they could muster against this hard-hitting OGH – Blue side.

The Hunters offense was on-fire up and down the lineup. Four guys went for the long ball, with Jarrad Barrow, Trifon Stafilis, Jason Maxwell and Geoff MacDonald all hitting home runs. Tim Carracher had a double on the day, while Andrew Clark had two singles and Brad Dolan scored three runs after a HBP and two walks. Other contributions included a single, double and 3 RBI’s from Archie Lygris, as well as two other hits for MacDonald to bring his total RBI’s up to four. Ben Gaplin had an RBI single, and Maxwell led the team in RBI’s with five after his homer, double and single.

OGH – Blue will be very happy if they can carry this momentum into round 5 and keep their undefeated streak alive as they visit Chelsea, while the Titans will try to avoid two losses in a row as they visit the tough-to-beat Saints.

North Western Titans vs. Ormond Glenhuntly – Blue 2nds

0                                             4

The Hunters handed North Western their second loss of the season as they manufactured enough offense to get the job done. OGH – Blue has outscored opponents 49-11 in the first four rounds, so they are proving to be some pretty difficult competition for other teams in the division. North Western will hope to avoid a two-game skid when they visit St. Kilda for round 5, while OGH – Blue will take a trip to Chelsea.

Pakenham Pumas vs. St. Kilda Saints 1sts

5                                     11

The Pumas have now lost two in a row after falling to the Saints’ impressive offense. Although Pakenham was able to string together some scoring opportunities of their own, five runs wasn’t enough against this formidable St. Kilda lineup. On the Puma’s side, John Beech had a single and a double for 2 RBI’s, while Danny Cannizzaro and Nick Barth each knocked in one. A pair of singles for Shaun Fahy and singles from Matt Clement, Simon Ferris and Travis Hough attempted to put a dent in the Saints’ advantage, but in the end St. Kilda pulled ahead anyway.

The winning side was thrilled with Tom Snowden’s big blast over the fence, along with RBI doubles from Nigel Burrows and Roland Curiel. Satoro Adachi, Eduardo Escalona and Mariano Favia all had singles and one RBI on the day, while Alan Ortiz maintained his hitting streak with a run-scoring hit, too. Paul Paskar smashed two doubles and brought home one run as well.

All in all, it was a great day at the plate for St. Kilda as they secure a 4-0 start to the season. The Puma’s will continue to pursue their second win in round 5 at Ormond Glenhuntly – Gold.

Pakenham Pumas vs. St. Kilda Saints 2nds

0                                     15

The Saints levelled their record to 2-2 with this convincing win over the Pumas. The entire lineup was constantly challenging to retire, putting Pakenham to the test and making them work for every out. Now the Pumas have three losses and one draw on the season, so they will be eager to get a win on the board by the time round 5 comes around.

Round 3 Recaps

North Western Titans vs. Ormond Glenhuntly – Gold 1sts

22                                           16

With 40 runs scored between these two teams, it was a fantastic day to be a batter and not so nice of an outing for the pitching staff. Neither side could hold the other down, with runners consistently getting on base and more often than not coming around to score.

Despite losing the game, OGH – Gold can be proud of their offensive production, something we haven’t seen much of in the first few rounds. On the Titans’ side, their lineup was thorough and relentless, with Ben Trudel sending one over the fence and hitting a single for a .400 average and 3 RBI’s. Nick Jarvis also had 3 RBI’s with two singles, as did Kyle Newman. Daniel Taylor had a single and a double for 2 RBI’s, and Matthew Martin went 2-for-3 with a single and a double. He also scored four runs for the Titans.

Danny Haymes added a double to the mix while all most of the batters took advantage of walks and HBP to do even more damage. This is a huge win for North Western after two disappointing losses to start the season. OGH – Gold will look for a more favourable outcome, and some more reliable pitching performances, in round 4.

North Western Titans vs. Ormond Glenhuntly – Gold 2nds

10                                           8

North Western managed to hold OGH – Gold at bay in the final innings to keep them from making a last-minute comeback. This is a great result for the Titans who now have a win on the board, in addition to one loss and one draw. Meanwhile the Hunters will continue to search for their second win after back-to-back losses drop their record to 1-2. The Hunters host the Chelsea Dolphins this weekend while the Titans welcome OGH – Blue to their home field.

Ormond Glenhuntly – Blue vs. St. Kilda Saints 1sts

7                                                       14

These two met for the first time since the thrilling Grand Final in March, and the Saints were successful in their search for redemption, scoring twice as many runs as the Hunters thanks to an offense that just won’t quit. This effort was led by Alan Ortiz, who had 3 RBI’s on a double and a home run, along with two walks, as well as Mariano Favia who brought home four runners with three hits on the day. Daniel Hogg came around to score three times, and he had two hard-hit balls including one that turned into a triple.

Other contributions included an RBI double from Robert Lewis, a pair of singles for Eduardo Escalona, an RBI single from Roland Curiel, and a double and home run from Nigel Burrows. Satoro Adachi rounded things out with a single. All in all, it was an excellent day to be a St. Kilda batter, and the lineup proved once more why they are the team to beat in the division.

On the OGH – Blue side, there were plenty of positive takeaways, including an offense that managed seven runs against a pitching staff that are normally very hard to break past. Tim Carracher’s double and home run gave the team some momentum, and Geoff MacDonald and Jason Maxwell joined him for the long ball with home runs of their own. Trifon Stafilis brought in two runs with a single and a double on the day, while Kyungsoo Jeon had two extra base hits and Andrew Clark recorded two singles. This hardworking offense will look to regroup and get their third win when round 4 at North Western comes along, while St. Kilda will turn their focus to their upcoming game at Pakenham.

Ormond Glenhuntly – Blue vs. St. Kilda Saints 2nds

12                                                    5

OGH – Blue is at it again! In this exciting meeting between last season’s finalists, the Saints fell to the Hunters after struggling to put as many runs on the board. The competition between these two looks to be intense all season long, as the Saints aim for their third premiership title in four years. OGH – Blue remains undefeated and is enjoying the top spot on the ladder after three rounds, while St. Kilda has fallen to 1-2 ahead of their round 4 trip to Pakenham.

Pakenham Pumas vs. Chelsea Dolphins 1sts

7                                     14

The Dolphins capitalised on their scoring opportunities to create a big enough buffer to take home their second win. The team was led by Aden Rusden, who hit two singles and had 3 RBI’s on the day, as well as 2 RBI’s from Wilson Yeh with a single and a double. Steve Tourtsakis knocked in three runs and had a great day at the plate, smashing two singles and one double. RBI singles from Mitch Bowen, Seongjoo Nam and Matthew Burton also made a difference. Jamin Tsai was solid on the mound, giving up just two hits and one earned run in three innings. He struck out one and walked none.

Although the Pumas fell short, they did have some good action at the plate, with 3 RBI’s from both Darren Reeves and Martin Kennedy. Doubles from Shaun Fahy and Scott Dale also helped, along with an RBI hit from Travis Hough. Unfortunately, a few tough innings for Pakenham pitchers did the damage, with Fahy taking the brunt of it when he allowed two earned runs and four more unearned runs scored in his sole inning of work. Kennedy didn’t have the best day on the mound, giving up five earned runs across two innings to this hard-hitting Chelsea side. Next up for the Dolphins is a road game at Ormond Glenhuntly – Gold, while Pakenham hosts St. Kilda on Sunday.

Pakenham Pumas vs. Chelsea Dolphins 2nds

13                                   15

Neither side was going down without a fight! After a see-saw day of crazy offensive outbursts and onslaughts, the Dolphins ultimately earned the win over the home team. The Pumas were so close to getting their first win on the board, but they couldn’t quite close the gap, leaving them with two losses and one draw so far this season. Meanwhile the 2-1 Dolphins find themselves in second place with plenty of potential to improve as the season moves forward.

Ormond Glenhuntly – Blue vs. St. Kilda Saints 1sts

Baseball Australia has revealed its list of Nationally Identified Players, aimed at ensuring competitive balance and promoting playing opportunities for Australians in the Brut Australian Baseball League.

The list of 36 players – which can expand to a maximum of 50 – will along with non-listed Australian players accrue negative points under new ABL roster rules.

Identified players – who were selected on senior performance in the past 24 months - will be worth negative-1 point and non-listed players negative-2.

Each team will have 150 points to use across the 10-week regular season with unused points from each round rolling over.

Team Australia general manager Glenn Williams said the system encouraged the six foundation ABL teams to play Australian talent, allowing players to push for national team selection.

“There are also players who aren’t listed that are very much in contention for national team selection,” Williams said.

“Players not nominated are still of high value to our national ambitions, but we are encouraging ABL teams to pick them based on the value they offer against the ABL points system.

“2019 will be a huge year for Team Australia and Australian players have a lot to play for this season.”

Team Australia’s first opportunity to qualify for Tokyo2020 will come at the Premier12 tournament in November 2019.

The ABL will release the 30-man rosters for each of the eight teams on Wednesday, including player points values for the 2018/19 ABL season.

Baseball Victoria is pleased to share the recent success of Doncaster Baseball Club in securing a grant for a women’s gala day.

Last month, Doncaster was announced as one of 23 recipients awarded funding through the second round of the Victorian Government’s Change Our Game Community Activation Grants.

Last month, Doncaster was announced as one of 23 recipients awarded funding through the second round of the Victorian Government’s Change Our Game Community Activation Grants.

These generous grants are designed to support local sports and recreation organisations in their efforts to deliver events and forums that honour the role of women and girls in this field.

Doncaster Baseball Club has been a champion of women’s participation for many years, and this dedication to levelling the playing field has culminated in Doncaster’s successful grant application. This funding will allow Doncaster and many members of the baseball community to showcase the contributions of female players and the promising future of their involvement in the sport.

Doncaster’s Change Our Game Project will be called Baseball and Beyond to acknowledge the all-around benefits that this sport provides to all participants. This women’s gala day will be held on Saturday 23rd March 2019.  The event will begin with an inspiring breakfast, highlighted by an appearance from a Change our Game ambassador. This will be followed by open training at Deep Creek Reserve, as well as a display game of the state’s best women baseball players.

Carolyn Minister from Doncaster says the entire club is thrilled with this opportunity. “We’re incredibly fortunate to have been supported in this initiative by the Change Our Game funding from the Victorian State Government,” Carolyn said. “It makes us optimistic about the future of women’s baseball.”

Current sport participation rates for girls inspired the club to apply for this funding and plan such an event. VicHealth statistics show that girls aged 5-14 years have a 67% participation rate, which drops to 29% for ages 15-19. By age 30, a meagre 8% of females are playing organised sport.

“We all know that sport is good for us and most of us know that the barriers for female participation in sport are greater than that for their male counterparts,” Carolyn added. “In some small way we hope to influence the girls currently in the baseball world to continue playing sport and to become more involved at different levels of the game, whether that is by playing, coaching, umpiring or on executive committees.”

More details about the Baseball and Beyond Gala Day will be released soon.

Baseball Victoria is proud to have supported and assisted Doncaster throughout the application process. The entire BV team is looking forward to seeing this event come together to honour our fantastic female participants.

The Baseball and Beyond project is supported by Change Our Game, an initiative of the Victorian Government.
