Baseball Victoria is now accepting applications for Head Coach and Executive Officer positions for our 2019 Under 16 and Under 18 State Teams.

OVERVIEW

The primary aim of the State Team programs is to develop and maximize the opportunities for our athletes to develop their skills and get exposure to the highest standard of baseball available to them. In many cases the State Team Program is an athlete's first step towards representing Australia and/or providing them a necessary platform to progress into Senior National Competitions, the US College system or professional ranks.

THE PROGRAM

In 2019, we anticipate once again sending two teams (Blue/White) for both age groups with each of the 4 team's staff consisting of a Head Coach, team of Assistant Coaches and an Executive Officer.

REQUIREMENTS

Appointed Coaches and Executive Officers (EOs) will be required to coordinate, implement and attend trials, squad training, training sessions and other events as directed by Baseball Victoria. Coordination and servicing of the teams during the National Championships will also be required. Both the Under 16 and Under 18 tournaments are scheduled to run from Friday 11th January through until Sunday 20th January at the Blacktown International Sportspark in Sydney.

Baseball Australia can today reveal the 64 athletes named to the 2018 Australian MLB Invitational, which will take place in Lismore, NSW between August 25 and September 1.

FULL LIST

The Australian MLB Invitational is designed to allow the best 13 and 14 year old players in the country to play competitive games under the guise of both local and international coaches on home soil, and will be heavily subsidized by MLB to maximise player attendance.

After a solid debut on the Australian baseball calendar in 2017, General Manager - Team Australia Glenn Williams believes the standard of the baseball will continue to grow.

“The success of last year’s program made the decision to run it again in 2018 an easy one for Baseball Australia and MLB,” Williams said.

“We saw a solid increase in state showcase events, with nearly 500 boys and girls taking part all over the country.

“The support of MLB for young players seeking further opportunities is a big asset for baseball in Australia. It’s great to be able to offer young people opportunities like this and we are excited to get them all into camp and working throughout the week.

“Baseball Australia and MLB are dedicated to continue to provide more opportunities for more players.”

The structure will mirror the 2017 edition, with the squad split into four teams, and each team playing five games across the week.

For the first time ever, there will be four players from New Zealand added to the Invitational squad. Those players will be confirmed closer to the event.

Australia’s hopes of reaching the U15 World Cup Super Round are over following a 22-7 loss to Netherlands in Panama on Tuesday morning.

Jake Burns’ second home run of the tournament was not enough as Australia fell to its third loss, putting it out of contention for the Super Round ahead of its final Group B game against Cuba tomorrow morning.

Australia took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Solomon Maguire walked and then scored on a wild pitch.

Netherlands then scored the next 12 runs of the ballgame.

Burns blasted a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth but it was unable to spark an Australian comeback.

Both teams put up four runs in the fifth before the Netherlands added further damage with a six-run sixth.

Maguire had a pair of hits and two walks for Australia.

Australia finished with seven hits and also drew 10 walks.

Jimmy Nati recorded two strikeouts on the mound.

Australia faces Cuba in its final Group B game from 1am tomorrow morning.

Hills have made history as the first team ever from the Australia Region to win their first two games of the Junior League World Series, as they defeated Canada 14-9 this morning.

After a back-and-forth ballgame where the lead was exchanged five times, Hills plated five runs in the first extra inning to put the game beyond doubt.

Will Edwards was fantastic for Hills, as the righty finished with a double, two RBIs, two walks and three runs. Edwards was also called upon in a delicate defensive situation, as the former U12 World Cup representative tossed four innings of high-pressure relief, and setting the platform for his team to make history.

Christos Lyberopoulos continued his strong tournament with two more hits, while Tyler Spiteri finished with a triple and two RBI.

Canada plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings, but in trademark Hills fashion, they never gave in.

All five of Hills' extra innings runs were scored with two outs, which set the stage for Edwards, who slammed the door shut with a 1-2-3 inning to seal the win.

Hills now are only one win away from the International Championship game, as they take on Asia-Pacific at 7am AEST on Thursday 16 August.

BOX SCORE

Hills pulled off a stirring comeback in game one of the Junior League World Series, defeating Europe Africa 7-5 in Taylor, Michigan.

After conceding the first three runs of the ballgame, a fifth inning blitz saw seven runs cross the plate.

Christos Lyberopoulos was outstanding for Hills, claiming a team high three hits. Lyberopoulos also held his nerve on the mound, striking out six including the last two of the ballgame to seal the win for Hills.

Tyler Spiteri, Cole Buck, Mathew Clements, Lachlan Bojarski and Stephen Courtney all drove in RBIs for Hills in the fifth inning, as they wrestled the lead back from Europe-Africa.

From there, Lyberopoulos and the Hills defence made the most of their opportunities, as they claimed a first-up win in Taylor.

Hills' second game of the Junior League World Series takes place at 7am AEST tomorrow (14 August, 2018) against Canada.

BOX SCORE

An early offensive explosion from the Dominican Republic proved a bridge too far for the Australian U15 World Cup team, as they fell 20-8 in Chitré, Panama.

James Nati again proved why he is one of the best young talents in Australian baseball with a solo home run in the bottom of the first which gave Australia an early lead.

From there however, the Dominican offence found it's groove, plating 13 runs in the next two innings, leaving Australia with a massive mountain to climb.

The Australians responded with a four run inning of their own in the bottom of the fourth, which was capped off by a two-RBI single from WA talent Maddux Stivey.

Unfortunately for the Australians, the offensive display continued from the Dominican Republic continued, as they racked up 20 hits to put the game beyond doubt.

Australia's fourth game of the U15 World Cup is a must-win clash against The Netherlands, which takes place at 1am AEST on Tuesday 14 August.

Australia collected its first win of the U15 World Cup in Panama on Sunday morning, riding a powerful offensive display to a 16-6 victory over South Africa.

New South Welshmen Quinn Johnson drove in five runs while Jake Burns and Jimmy Nati homered as Australia bounced back from an opening game loss to Japan.

Australia scored five runs in the first and built a 9-1 lead before South Africa threatened, cutting five runs of the deficit in the fifth.

But Australia steadied, adding seven late runs, to collect its first win of the tournament.

Johnson led the way with five runs batted in on two hits, two walks and a stolen base.

While Burns drove in four runs and went deep in the fourth after Nati’s lead-off homer had put Australia ahead 7-1.

Western Australian Maddux Stivey started on the mound, recording two strikeouts and facing the minimum.

Ian Lee and Matthew West also finished with a couple of strikeouts each, before Max Chipper tossed a scoreless sixth.

Australia’s campaign continues against the Dominican Republic tomorrow, starting from 5am AEST.

Diary #9

We had an early start today and got to spend it mostly with our parents. Some boys went back to the hotel to sleep whilst others went out and continued their shopping.

A number of the boys returned to the hotel around 4 before heading out to a local sports park at 5.

We took batting practice, hit out on the driving range and went go karting.

After we headed home to get ready to go out to dinner, before returning one last time to the famous Walmart.

We then headed home to get a good nights sleep before our scrimmage against the Chicago team tomorrow morning.

Diary #8

Today we had an early start and got to go out with our parents for a while.

We visited some outlets and other shops. The boys had to be returned to the hotel before 1 o’clock as we had a team commitment that we had to attend.

All of the competing teams here at the JLWS got to visit an arcade called ‘Dave and Busters.’

Here in the US it is a big arcade that is highly popular, it was a great experience.

From here we got a bus to Toledo to see a Mud Hens game (AAA affiliate of the Detroit Tigers.)

It was a very enjoyable game that finished up with Toledo winning 4-1.

It was great to watch many up coming prospects. We then headed home for a good nights rest.

Diary #7 - Game four against Mexico

We got to have another sleep in today before our game against Mexico to decided who would face Chinese Taipei in the International Championship game on Saturday.

We went over to Denny's to have breakfast before going out to visit Detroit.

We went on a drive to 8 mile road to visit where Eminem grew up.

Whilst also checking out what else Detroit has to offer.

We then headed home to get ready for our game. Our game time start was pushed back due to rain, so we arrived at the field at around 6 o'clock.

We took batting practice and went through our normal routine however it wasn't our day again.

We made consistent hard contact throughout the game but just couldn't come up clutch when we needed to, going down to Mexico 7-2.

We were all quite disappointed with our performance on the day however we are still proud of what we managed to accomplish during our time at the JLWS.

Mexico will now face Chinese Taipei in the International Championship game on Saturday.

DIARY #6 - Game three

Today we got to have another sleep in and late breakfast before we went out to visit some shops and grab some lunch.

After we had lunch we headed to the field to watch some of the other games that were taking place around the field.

After a while we headed back to the hotel to get ready and prepared for our big game against Chinese Taipei.

For us it was our third game and for them their 2nd with a lot at stake.

We prepared well taking a strong session of infield outfield and a solid BP session however it just wasn't our day.

We lost 10-0 in a fairly one sided game. However we did threaten early on, we consistently made hard contact but just straight to fielders.

Unfortunately it just wasn't our day but the boys were still in a good positive mood. We are looking forward for round 2 tomorrow against Mexico.

We finished off a disappointing day with dinner with our parents before heading home for a good nights rest.

DIARY #5 - MLB experience

Today we had a quiet day after our stressful win against Canada yesterday.

After breakfast we got to go out and spend the day with our parents.

Although most of the boys ended up at another Dick's Sporting Good's store before heading to the local outlets.

At around 5 o'clock the boys assembled back at the hotel as we prepared to leave for a Detroit Tigers vs Chicago White Sox game.

First pitch was at 7:10pm, and it was a very competitive game.

There were many hits and homeruns, and the final score ended up a 6-3 loss for the home town Detroit team.

Although it was a great experience for all the boys and their parents.

DIARY #4 - Game two

Today we had a late start after a long night last night.

We went and visited the Mall again, and grabbed some lunch before our game.

We left for the field at around 3 o'clock to take some early batting practice and fielding work.

The starting pitcher for our game against Canada was Harrison Wheeldon who pitched a total of 4 innings en route to our 14-9 win.

It was a very back and forth game with Australia taking an early lead before falling behind later on.

We rallied back and pulled together as a team to end up winning the game.

I came on in relief of Harrison and was quite nervous at the time.

We ended up going to extra innings which became very stressful at certain times.

Overall we played a quality game of baseball and look forward to our next game against Chinese Taipei.

We concluded our night with dinner with our parents at Buffalo Wild Wings, before returning to the hotel for a good nights sleep.
