Bendigo will be the epicentre of the women’s baseball world this weekend, as the Australian Emeralds preparation for the 2018 Women’s World Cup begins in earnest.

The Emeralds will host the number one team in the world, Japan, in the inaugural Bendigo Challenge which begins Friday at Strathfieldsaye Recreational Reserve.

For the greater Bendigo community, the Bendigo Challenge is an opportunity for the baseball-mad city to take in top level baseball, while for the 39 Australian Emeralds squad members, this weekend will serve as the last chance to impress ahead of the eighth Women’s World Cup in Florida.

Of the 39 hopefuls, 20 will receive the call-up to represent Australia at the World Cup, which begins on August 22.

Australian Emeralds Manager Simone Wearne believes the Bendigo Challenge will serve as the perfect preparation for the team.

“We’ve put together a squad that will challenge each other, compete at a high level and contains a good blend of youth and experience,” Wearne said.

“Over half the squad we have selected are 25 or under, with eight players under the age of 18.”

“Those numbers are important for our program and show the depth that is coming through across the country.

“We have a number of veterans still pushing for selection, and this will no doubt assist in creating a really competitive environment for overall World Cup team selection.”

“The opportunity to come up against the best team in the world (Japan) will serve as perfect preparation for the World Cup.”

The Emeralds claimed major scalps at the 2016 World Cup in Japan on their way to a 5th place finish, with victories against baseball powerhouses Korea and the USA.

The 39 World Cup hopefuls will be split into two teams (Australia Green and Australia White), with Australia Green kicking off the challenge against Japan at 9am this Saturday.

Western Australian native and U23 World Cup silver medallist Josh Hendrickson has today fulfilled a lifelong dream, being drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 20th round of the MLB Draft.

20-year-old Hendrickson has been plying his trade for NJCAA Division 1 side Barton Community College in the 2017/18 season, anchoring the Cougars to a history making 47-15 record.

The 6’4” leftie posted outstanding numbers in his sophomore campaign, finishing with 125 strikeouts (4th in NJCAA D1) in 96.1 innings of work. Hendrickson finished with an 11-3 record, and an impressive ERA of 2.52.

Hendrickson has the option continuing his college career with the University of San Diego, and believes the competitiveness in the US college system has held him in good stead.

“Every kid dreams of playing professional baseball, and that was something I aspired to do,” Hendrickson said.

“Playing college baseball in the US was a challenge, as everyone plays baseball there. There are so many good college and high school teams which adds to the pressure, as there is always someone ready to take your spot.”

Hendrickson made three appearances at the U23 World Cup in 2016, with the Australian team taking home a silver medal.

The Australian Baseball League has released the structure of the 2018/19 ABL season with the creation of two conferences to accommodate the new eight team format, headlined by two international expansion clubs from Korea and New Zealand.

Following announcements in the last 48 hours of the Adelaide Crows (Adelaide Bite), and Holloway Sports Group (Brisbane Bandits) both securing team licences, Baseball Australia has confirmed five of the six existing teams will be successfully privatised this season.

LEAGUE STRUCTURE

With today's announcement, the Australian Baseball League will become the first domestic Australian sporting league to move to a conference model like those used in the major sports leagues in the USA.

The six existing ABL teams will compete in the 2018/19 season, along with Winterball Korea, and a team from New Zealand.

The eight teams will form two conferences playing a 160-game season across 10 weeks. Each team will play eight home and away games against the other three teams in its conference, with cross-conference teams matching up in a single, four-game series each season.

Baseball Australia CEO Cam Vale was upbeat about the league's potential following the board meeting this morning.

"At the beginning of last season, we set ourselves a goal to expand the league by two teams, and we are proud to have achieved that goal," Vale said.

"To have secured two expansion teams for this season is exciting for the sport, the teams and baseball in Australia as a whole. It means more games for fans to engage with, either in-stadium or from their devices."

"This season will make sporting history, as Winterball Korea becomes the first overseas team to be based and play in an Australian sporting competition. The Australian location of this team will be confirmed shortly."

"Couple that with the long-anticipated confirmation of the addition of a team from New Zealand and we are very excited for the renewed international focus of the ABL and its overall prospect of success."

With the public confirmation of five licence holders, Vale added the following comments specific to the three remaining teams.

"The confirmation of the formal acceptance of a New Zealand team into the league has been a lengthy process both in Australia and New Zealand, and we anticipate making that official in the next fortnight with a venue agreement and finalisation of Baseball NZ's broader investment group the only outstanding issues."

"Similarly, the Perth Heat licence holder has been provisionally ratified and now becomes a matter of timing in terms of the public release of the details of the Heat's ownership group."

"The Melbourne Aces is the only team, existing or expansion, that we are unlikely to licence for this coming season and as such will implement an interim arrangement".

"We have had very good interest from both local and international groups in the Aces, and remain confident a permanent licence holder will be found in the next six months and be able to fully take over the team for the 2019/20 season."

"Whilst we have not yet formally signed off on the interim licence holder, we are very close to an agreement built on our determination to do everything we can to keep a Melbourne based team in the ABL for this ninth ABL season," Vale said.

FUTURE EXPANSION

After securing the first two expansion teams, both as overseas teams, Vale was confident future expansion is not far away and that it will be a mix of Australian and overseas teams.

"Additional expansion opportunities will continue to arise in future seasons, as the potential grows for more regional centres to host ABL teams," Vale said.

"Following the successful finalisation of an eight-team league, our long-term goal is moving to a 10, and then a 12-team league."

"Wollongong is certainly amongst those at the front of the queue for an ABL team based on the successful hosting of the Wollongong Classic in the past two seasons, with plans in place to take ABL games there again this season."

"Expansion to include teams from international powerhouses such as Japan and Taiwan is also a high priority and aligning these teams to the right locations is critical to the long-term success of the league."

"One of our major goals moving forward is to make the ABL a truly national league, with the potential for either standalone Australian teams or international clubs to be based in Tasmania or the Northern Territory, as well as a second team in Queensland."

"Plans are in place to meet with government and local representatives from each state in the next month to discuss further expansion opportunities."

Baseball Australia has strong track record of engaging with regional Australia in recent years; having taken key events and camps to Lismore and Geelong, whilst later this week the Women's National team, the Australian Emeralds will conclude their World Cup preparations in Bendigo.

School Sports Victoria are seeking applications for the position of Head Coach, Assistant Coach and Manager for the 2019 and 2020 17 & Under Victorian Schools Baseball Team.

The team trials are scheduled to be conducted in February of 2019 pending the availabilities of the appointed coaching staff. The tournament will be held in the premier Geelong Baseball Complex, with the proposed dates being the 28th April – 4th May, 2019.

Coaches interested in applying must have the minimum coaching accreditation and prospective Managers must have first aid training.

The Adelaide Bite have announced the Adelaide Crows have secured the team's licence for the upcoming season.

Baseball Australia CEO Cam Vale described the Crows as a powerhouse sporting club and added their involvement in a new era of baseball was exciting for South Australia and the broader competition.

"The Crows are one of the leaders in Australian sport, and the potential that baseball has within their organisation as we push into Asia is enormous," Vale said.

"Baseball offers a global reach to which few sports can compare, with the four biggest baseball countries also being top-ten trading and business partners of Australia in Korea, the United States, Taiwan and Japan.

"There will be a minimum 40 ABL games broadcast into Korea to a total audience exceeding 10 million people, not to mention broadcasts into other countries such as Japan, Taiwan and the United States.

Crows Chairman Rob Chapman said the expansion into baseball was a significant moment in the Club's history.

He added it was also providing crucial support to another proud South Australian sporting community and organisation with aspirations for success.

"We have often spoken about the need to diversify and what we are doing in this instance is playing to our strengths in sports administration, while adopting a model in line with other similar organisations across the globe," Chapman said.

Adelaide Advertiser story

Baseball Australia is proud to announce Mark Ready as the Brisbane Bandits license holder.

Following a long and storied affiliation with the three-time ABL champions, Ready is taking his commitment to the next level, and believes the Bandits are destined for more success.

"This season we have had time to reflect on the success we have achieved and above all else we've come to understand that the City of Brisbane has given us so much love, so much support, so much financial help and so much trust that this year we are dedicating our season to the city," Ready said.

We are so much more than just a baseball team, we are the heart and soul of that undying Brisbane spirit. We owe this city so much, it's our home, our roots are deep, our blood is in the soil here."

Ready has been involved in Queensland baseball for decades, and has more recently overseen the Bandits three consecutive championships as Chief Executive Officer.

The Bandits have developed quality relationships in the Asian market - specifically Taiwan - and Ready believes the league's expansion into Asia is a key directive moving forward.

"We want to inform the Taiwanese baseball fans that in their off season there is a top quality league playing with Taiwanese super stars in the same time zone."

"It's a personal passion to bring our two countries (Australia and Taiwan) closer together in any way possible. I believe in baseball we have a unique opportunity to use it as a cultural, economic and friendship bridge."

Baseball Australia CEO Cam Vale believes Ready will continue to lead the Bandits with great honour.

"Mark represents a licence holder that has had great balance between what he has done with the Bandits, and also how he has supported the League with the push into Taiwan, particularly in the last 12 months," Vale said.

"There really wasn't anyone else we were going to consider for the Bandits once Mark declared he was interested, and this is one that will certainly please all involved in Baseball in Queensland."
