Competing players must be under the specified age for the particular program being staged at 31st December of the preceding year. Example: Under 16 players who turns 16 on 31st December is not eligible, whereas a player who turns 16 on 1st January is eligible for the Under 16 AYC.

Friendship Player Eligibility

In order to be eligible to become a friendship player for another state, players must have registered and trialled unsuccessfully for their respective home state. Players who choose NOT to trial for their respective home states will be ineligible to be considered as friendship players. Players wishing to be eligible as friendship players are required to register their interest online within the specified time frames as set forth by BA. At the completion of the registration process registered players will form the friendship player selection pool. In making themselves available, those players are committing themselves to represent the relevant state and the costs associated with that representation.

Friendship Player Selection

The Head of High Performance (HHP) will liaise with the requesting team’s High Performance Manager (HPM) in regard to friendship player requirements. Once established the HHP will consult with State HPM’s and gather relevant information about players listed within the friendship player selection pool. The HHP and respective National Team Head Coach will complete selection of friendship players. If considered for a friendship position, players will be contacted directly by BA. Once a friendship player is selected, they are able to come back to represent their home state up until a reasonable date set by BA prior to the tournament. This date will take into consideration being able to find a player to replace the original appointed player and make any necessary changes to flights and other relevant details. The relevant State Associations will be notified of the selections and provided two (2) days to lodge a valid objection for not providing a clearance. Should an objection not be forthcoming within the specified timeframe, players shall be regarded as cleared. Should the State Association refuse clearance, BA will seek the reasons for such a refusal and seek to resolve any issues to the satisfaction of all parties. BA retains the right to ultimately provide clearance or refuse clearance to any players making themselves available as Friendship Players.

Applications close at 5pm AEDST on 7 November.

This is the second year that Australians have been selected to represent the MLB World Select Team; with 2016’s team featuring a number of young Australians who have since signed professional contracts/committed to playing college baseball.

Baseball Australia’s Head of High Performance Glenn Williams sees this representation in international MLB programs as vital moving forward.

“This is another excellent opportunity for a quality group of players from Australia,” Williams said.

“The support from MLB not only for the individuals, but assisting Baseball Australia in solidifying relationships with quality programs in the USA is of tremendous benefit. Many players from last year’s trip did an excellent job in representing Australian Baseball and have gone on to college or professional opportunities. I have no doubt that this group will represent the program extremely well and not only aim to secure opportunities for themselves but to open doors for other Australian players in the future.”

One of the main purposes of the MLB World Select Team is to showcase members of MLB’s international academies, with players from nine countries including Australia, Belgium and Brazil to be exposed to college/professional level baseball.

The MLB World Select Team is funded by MLB and aims to further progress the already strong relationships between Australian Baseball and the MLB.

Not only will 11 young Australians get an opportunity to play against top quality opposition, three Australian coaches are part of the coaching staff in the MLB World Select Team.

Baseball Australia’s Head of High Performance Glenn Williams, former MLB pitcher Micheal Nakamura and former Australian Junior Representative Tyrone Hambly will join the coaching staff for the tour.

The team will be playing multiple games in Millington, TN in the leadup to the Arizona Fall Classic, which begins on October 10.

Following an impressive 5th place finish at the WBSC (World Baseball Softball Confederation) U18 Baseball World Cup, Team Australia has improved on their already historic World Ranking, with the latest WBSC World Rankings Presented by ENEOS seeing Team Australia climb to No. 7 in the world.

Team Australia has already made history in 2017, after rising to an unprecedented No. 8 following the team’s best ever performance at a World Baseball Classic, and this further rankings increase bodes well for upcoming tournaments. 2018 sees our U23 team attempt to defend their 2016 silver medal, while our U15 team will aim for continued improvement at their World Cup.

The Men’s National Team will participate in an annual series of games against the Cuban National Team beginning in late 2018, which serves as preparation for their first appearance at the WBSC’s flagship event, the 2019 Premier12 tournament.

Baseball Australia’s Head of High Performance Glenn Williams says the collective effort has been paramount to the program’s success.

“This continual rise in the ranks is a sign that the program is heading in the right direction, and with continued hard work we have a great chance to continue this trend,” Williams said.

“The World Ranking system takes into account all National teams – from the U12 all the way through to the Senior Men’s team. It’s great to know that the players who competed on the U12 team in Taiwan have contributed to this as well.”

“We have some excellent people within our program contributing to the teams going away and they deserve a lot of the credit for this.”

According to the WBSC, the World Rankings are weighted by a country's performance in WBSC-sanctioned events international tournaments (from U12 to Men’s National Team) over a four-year period.

Baseball Australia CEO Cam Vale sees this groundbreaking improvement as just the beginning.

“Under the leadership of High Performance Manager Glenn Williams, his team of coaches and support staff across all our teams and programs are doing an outstanding job in their preparation and delivery of our National teams,” Vale said.

“The world rankings are a reflection of the depth of senior and junior teams we send to international competition, representing a collective effort of athletes from our Under 12s through to our senior team that competed at this year’s World Baseball Classic”.

“We will continue to strive for more success on the path to the 2020 Olympics”.
