Australia found themselves on the end of a red hot pitching performance, as Korea came away with an 8-0 victory at the U12 Baseball World Cup in Taiwan.

Korea’s pitching was outstanding on the day, only giving up three Australian baserunners, with Queenslander Oscar Hyde claiming the only hit of the ballgame for the Aussies.

SA’s Jack Hutton was the starting pitcher on the day for Australia and certainly showed glimpses of brilliance, including an inning ending strikeout which kept the Koreans at bay early in the ballgame.

Jye Burns and Kyan Roach were the only other Australians to reach base care of a walk each, as the Aussies ran into a red-hot Korean pitching staff who have only given up one run in their 12 defensive innings so far at the tournament.

A pair of double plays were the defensive highlights for Australia, however Korea showed why they will be one of the teams to beat, scoring consistently to come away with their first win of the tournament.

Australia’s next game at the #U12WorldCup will see them take on Germany on Sunday 30 July at 12pm AEST. You can keep up with the live scoring on the Baseball Live App.

Check out assistant coach Shayne Watson chatting with Jye Burns (NSW) and Jack Hutton (SA) after the game.

Australia couldn't match the power of the defending champion United States, falling 16-0 in their U12 Baseball World Cup opener in Taiwan.

South Australian Angus Catt was given the honour of starting the game on the mound for Australia, and fell behind quickly as the US nailed their first home run of the day to jump out to a 3-0 lead after the first frame.

The floodgates opened in the second, as the US scored nine runs, cementing their favouritism to go back-to-back at the U12 World Cup.

Liam Padovan and Will Baker both managed to find their way on base in the top of the third, but a nice pickoff move from the US starting pitcher Bryce Rainer ended the Australian rally.

Brendan Regan and Oscar Hyde were both unlucky not to reach base in the fourth, only to be denied by some stellar defence from US second baseman Errick Barnes Jr.

Barnes then put the exclamation point on the ballgame for the US, nailing the fourth home run of the day to finish things off and give the defending champions the best possible result.

Australia's next game at the #U12WorldCup sees the boys go head-to-head with Korea on Saturday 29 August at 12pm AEST. You can watch the game live on YouTube. Check the Team Australia Baseball facebook page for details.

Baseball Australia in partnership with Major League Baseball (MLB) are excited to announce the first Australian MLB Invitational will take place between the 26th of August and the 2nd of September at the Albert Park Baseball Complex in Lismore, NSW.

The Australian MLB Invitational is designed to allow the best 13 and 14 year old players in the country to play competitive games under the guise of both local and international coaches on home soil, and will be heavily subsidized by MLB to maximise player attendance.

MLB Front Office Staff will be in attendance at the invitational, which is to be structured akin to the MLB Australian Academy Program (U15-U17), a longstanding program that has produced Major Leaguers like Brad Harman, Luke Hughes and Liam Hendriks.

Baseball Australia’s Head of High Performance Glenn Williams is excited to continue the already strong relationship with MLB.

“MLB’s support in Australia has been long standing, and the fact we get a chance to put in a program in place for another age group of athletes is excellent,” Williams said.

“The MLBAAP has produced some of the best baseball players to leave our shores. The fact we get to see and work with players at age 13 and 14 will no doubt help accelerate the development of the next generation of Australian stars.”

Selected players came highly recommended from state staff following their performances in Little League/Junior League programs as well as the recent Australia MLB Showcase, which saw nearly 500 participants take part from all over the country.

MLB’s Senior Manager of International Baseball Operations Giovanni Hernandez has identified a need for an event like the MLB Invitational in Australia.

“Australia has done a really great job with the U12 age group,” Hernandez said.

“With the MLB Academy also an important tool for developing the 16/17 year olds in Australia, this Invitational gives the players coming out of Little League the chance to bridge the gap before they hit that MLB Academy age group.”

The Australian MLB Invitational will consist of a combination of player development workouts and high intensity gameplay.

Lismore Mayor Isaac Smith is delighted to bring another exciting baseball event to the city.

“To have the best 13 and 14 year old baseballers in the country in Lismore for a week is a great outcome for the city,” Smith said.

“We look forward to welcoming players and officials to Lismore which will see economic benefits flow back into our business community.”

Stay tuned to baseball.com.au and the Baseball Australia Social Media pages for more information regarding the Australian MLB Invitational.

Brad Harman has done it all.

He’s played for his country on the biggest stage in the world, he’s one of 33 Australians to play in Major League Baseball, and he’s a graduate of the MLB Australian Academy Program.

Harman is widely regarded as one of the best infielders Australia has ever produced, and he says his MLBAAP experience in 2003 gave him an insight into the day-to-day life of a professional baseballer.

“The Academy gave me a really well-rounded experience,” Harman said.

“When I was going through the early stages of professional baseball, I was able to look back at my experiences at the Academy. It gave me a great indication of what life in pro-ball was all about.”

Harman made his debut for Team Australia in the 2005 Baseball World Cup, which started an extensive career in the green and gold. More recently, Harman was outstanding at his third World Baseball Classic, holding down the middle infield, turning slick double plays and reaching base safely in all three of Australia’s pool games.

A six year career in the Phillies organisation was highlighted in 2008, when a 22 year old Harman made his debut in the MLB. Harman was one of the rare few that was signed a professional contract before attending the MLBAAP, and his advice for this year’s crop of attendees is candid and insightful.

“You’ve really got to manage your personal expectations at the Academy,” Harman said.

“One bad week on the field isn’t going to define you as a baseball player. It’s common for young players to put a lot of pressure on themselves, but at the end of the day, you’ve got so many great coaches to learn from. Take it all in, keep an open mind and absorb as much knowledge as you can, because you’re surrounded by the top coaches and players in the country.”

The 2017 MLB Australian Academy begins on Friday 28 July at Surfers Paradise Baseball Club. Click here to keep up to date with the live scoring, statistics and match reports.

After leading the Southern Mariners to the Little League State Championship in 2016, Gen was back in 2017 to lead the Mariners to a second State Championship in as many years. Pitching in the final game of this year’s tournament against the Eastern Athletics, Gen was dominant, pitching 5.0 innings and striking out 14 in the process.

She was subsequently selected in the Victorian Women’s Youth team to compete in the 2017 National Youth Championships where she was the youngest member of the team at just 12 years old, returning home with a silver medal.

While a green and gold cap may not have been on her radar at the beginning of the year, her selection into the Australian team is certainly something she’s earned. It’s been a whirlwind year for the budding young left-hander turned frequent flyer and we can’t wait to see her on the world stage in August.

Congratulations Geneveive!
