U16 – Queensland 13-0
Australian Capital Territory

Queensland swung the bats early and often as they defeated
the ACT 13-0 to end the first round of the National Youth Championships on a
high. Brock Wollin and Jaiden Holly combined to only give up two hits in five
innings of work for Queensland. Every Queensland hitter reached base in a
complete performance, with leadoff man Liam MacDonald going 2-for-2 with a
triple and three RBI. Tim Preston and Josh Healy picked up the ACT’s two hits.

 

U16 – New South Wales
10-0 Victoria White

New South Wales had one of their most complete performances
of the tournament so far, defeating Victoria White 10-0 on Diamond 2 this
morning. Seb Mathews and Aidan Torpey both had two hits each, while Luke Livian
legged out a triple. NSW used their pitching sparingly, with none of their four
pitchers throwing more than 28. Liam McCallum struck out two and only gave up
one hit in his outing. Mitch Homfray and Jed Woodger claimed Vic White’s two
hits. 

 

U16 – Victoria Blue
15-2 New South Wales Country

A mammoth first inning from Victoria Blue set them on their
way to a 15-2 victory over New South Wales Country. Every Vic Blue hitter
notched at least a hit and an RBI, with Zak Skinner picking up three hits and
an RBI, while Tim Reid claimed three RBI from his hit. Four Vic Blue pitchers
combined to give up only four hits on the day for NSW Country. Daniel Willings,
Tristan Watts, Josh Banks and Mitch Vickery all had hits for NSW Country, while
Ethan Keane threw well in relief, striking out three in 2.2 shutout innings of
relief.

 

U16 – Western
Australia vs. South Australia

It was a classic encounter between two of the top teams in
the U16 division and it took a Carter Dowling double to walk off SA 11-10.  Western Australia trailled 10-6 with three
outs left in the ballgame, but came back to record a stunning victory. Dan
Carter had another three RBI, while Matt Martin drove two runs in for WA.
Calvin Eissens had a solid relief outing, only giving up the one run in 2.2
innings. Liam Bull had one of his better games of the tournament, with three
hits, two RBI and three runs, Ethan Badcock also picked up a pair of hits and
an RBI. 

 

U18 – New South Wales
10-0 Queensland

New South Wales’ pitchers were impressive, and some hot bats
backed them up as they defeated Queensland in a state of origin battle 10-0 on
Diamond 2 today. Kyle Glogoski struck out six and only gave up one hit in three
innings of work, while Mitchell Driver had another strong relief outing to
finish the job for NSW, not giving up a run in four relief innings. Driver
swung the bat well too, finishing with a pair of RBI. Luke Passmore, Ismail
Adra and Matt Martinson had two hits each, while Alex Brook had two RBI. Callum
Pike had two hits for Queensland, with Rory Spletter and Luke Turner each
picking up one hit each.

 

U18 – Victoria Blue
7-6 Victoria White (F/10)

Despite giving up a pair of early runs, Victoria Blue
mounted a comeback and eventually scored the winning run in the bottom of the
10th 7-6 against Victoria White. Hits were shared for Victoria Blue,
while Luke Cartwright played the role of the hero, with a walkoff double to
right field sealing the victory. Josh Meyer and Mitch Wilcox combined for four
innings of relief for Vic Blue as they kept the Vic White bats at bay in the
late innings. Sam Drummond did his best to lead Vic White home, with four hits
and three RBI on the day. Liam Madden struck out three and only gave up one
earned run in his four innings of relief for Vic White.

U18 – New South Wales Country 13-4 Australian
Capital Territory

New South Wales Country picked up five runs in the first two
innings and never looked back, downing the ACT 13-4 to end their round robin
play on a good note. Alex Osborne was exceptional in his start for NSW Country,
striking out four and only giving up two hits in 3.1 innings. Jake Amos again
impressed with bat in hand, going 2-for-3 with three RBI. Rixon Wingrove also
hit well, picking up three hits and driving two runs in. Ricky Deeble had one
of his best games for the tournament with two hits and two RBI.

 

U18 – Western
Australia vs. South Australia

Western Australia came back to take a lead in the seventh
inning, however South Australia just snuck home 13-11 in extras to take a win
and top seed heading into the second round. Griffin Weber came up big in the
final frame, nailing a three-RBI double to tack on three extra innings runs for
SA. Mason Clavell had another three hits to add to his strong tournament, while
Blayke McMillan had two RBI. For WA, Mason Talbot had a great day at the plate,
going 2-for-3 with three RBI. Jake Taylor drove in a pair of runs for WA, while
Josh Greenham had two hits.

U16 – New South Wales
18-2 South Australia

New South Wales took an early lead against South Australia
and never looked back, claiming an 18-2 victory on Diamond 3 to begin the day.
Every player in the New South Wales starting lineup claimed either a hit or an
RBI in a complete offensive performance. Jack Lee and Hayden Lyberopoulos had
three RBI each, while leadoff hitter and third baseman Daniel Bannon had two
RBI to go with his three hits. New South Wales only gave up three hits on the
day, with Cody Godbold, Kobe Kunce and Luke Livian combining for three shutout
innings after SA tacked on a pair of runs in the second. Zac Heintze-Unger, Zac
Stroud and Jasper Clark claimed South Australia’s three hits.

 

U16 – Victoria Blue
12-11 Victoria White

Victoria White skipped out to a 9-3 lead, but couldn’t hold
on against their Victorian counterparts, as Victoria Blue snuck home 12-11.
Henry Hayman continued his solid tournament thus far with another three hits
and an RBI, while Damon Hill and leadoff man Mitch Homfray had two RBI each.
Zac Skinner had a monster day at the plate for Vic Blue, going 3-for-4 with
four RBI. Reece Longstaff chipped in with a pair of RBI, while Fraser Smith
claimed two hits. River Stevens-Dobby was solid in his starting role, striking
out four and only conceding two earned runs in his four innings.

 

U16 – Queensland 9-2
New South Wales Country

Queensland made their presence felt early, and New South
Wales Country couldn’t quite string enough hits together as they fell 9-2 to
the Bandits. Patrick Day struck out four and only gave up the one earned run in
his four innings of work for Queensland, while with bat in hand, Angelo Natale
proved a tough out for the second day in a row, going 3-for-4 with two RBI. Shortstop
Seth McClelland also hit well, with two RBI to go with his two hits. Tom
Newbold was the only NSW Country hitter to claimed two hits, while Lachlan Dean
picked up the team’s only RBI of the ballgame.

 

U16 – Western
Australia 14-2 Australian Capital Territory

Western Australia scored early and often, and kept the ACT
at bay, recording a 14-2 win on Diamond 3 to end the day. Bailey Curtis picked
up two hits for the ACT, while Hamish Lambert and Matt Teague drove in the two
ACT runs. Caiden Nicoletto had a perfect day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with
two RBI and a triple. Dan Carter also had a triple for WA to go with his 2RBI. Both
Nick Riley and Byron Armstrong had great days on the mound for WA, with Riley
not giving up a hit in his two innings.

 

U18 – Victoria Blue
11-1 Australian Capital Territory

Victoria Blue kept the scoreboard ticking over against the
ACT, as they eventually ran out 11-1 winners in the opening game on Diamond 1
today. Jarryd Dale became the first player at the tournament to hit a home run
on Diamond one, while each player in the Victoria Blue lineup claimed a hit.
Jackson Boyd again showed his quality, with five strikeouts and only one earned
run in his 3.2 innings. Julian Paramanov had three hits on the day for the ACT,
while catcher Mitch Edwards had two. Mark Zhang drove in the ACT’s only run of
the ballgame in the fourth.

 

U18 – Queensland 19-9
New South Wales Country

Queensland’s early scoring was capped off by an eight run
fourth inning as they defeated New South Wales Country 19-9 in the first game
on Diamond 2 this morning. James Franco and Ryota Kusomoto each had outstanding
games with bat in hand, claiming five hits and a mammoth seven RBI between
them. Luke Turner had another four RBI as he continued his good tournament. For
Country New South Wales, two talented hitters both showed their worth as Rixon
Wingrove and Jake Amos both had three RBI. Minami Matsumoto had two hits and
two RBI, while Josh Wingrove was strong on the mound, only giving up one earned
run from his three innings of relief.

 

U18 – South Australia
11-6 New South Wales

South Australia were up early and never looked back,
defeating New South Wales 11-6 on Diamond 2. John Inglis threw strongly in
relief for South Australia, striking out one and not giving up any runs in his
3.2 innings on the bump. Mason Clavell and Jarrod Miller each nailed big
triples for SA, while Clavell and Curtis Mead both had two RBI. Rhys Dewick was
the only player to claim multiple hits for NSW, while Mitch Drive picked up two
RBI.

 

U18 – Victoria White
vs. Western Australia

In the final game of the night, Western Australia took an
early lead but couldn’t maintain it, as Victoria White came back to claim a 5-1
win. Huge Leropoulos was fantastic on the mound for Vic White, throwing five
relief innings of shutout baseball and keeping Vic White in the ballgame.
John-Paul Callil hit well again, claiming two hits and an RBI for Vic White
while Kyle Morrison and Liam Madden drove in a run each. Jess Williams, Jett
Wright and Josh Greenham all had two hits each for WA, while David John claimed
the only RBI of the night. 

As the National Youth Championships conclude at Blacktown
International Sportspark, the Australian U18 team will take on Guam and New
Zealand for the Baseball Confederation of Oceania (BCO) U18 Championship.

 

The winner of the BCO U18 Championship will take their place
at the U18 Baseball World Cup in Thunder Bay, Canada from 1-11 September 2017.

 

National team selectors have been in attendance at the
National Youth Championships keeping an eye on potential team members, with the
final team to be announced at the conclusion of the National Youth
Championships (15 January).

U16 – Victoria White 10-9 Australian Capital Territory
(F/9)

It was the ACT’s second
consecutive extra innings ballgame, but they unfortunately fell short again, as
Victoria White claimed a 10-9 victory after two extra innings. Henry Hayman had
three clutch RBI down the stretch for Victoria White, while Chris Nielsen had a
long relief outing in trying conditions, striking out five and only conceding
two earned runs in six innings. Stuart Tharle and Trent Buchanan had great days
with bat in hand for the ACT, each picking up three RBI. Both teams scored runs
in the first extra frame, however Vic White managed to claim three in the 9th
inning to defeat the ACT.

 

U16 – South Australia 11-6 New South Wales Country

In a back and forth
ballgame between SA and NSW Country, some timely late hitting and a solid relief
outing saw them home with an 11-6 victory. Sam McLean continued his great form
at the tournament, with another three hits and two RBI. McLean also legged out
a double and a triple in warm conditions. Bailey Van Leeuwen also claimed two
RBI, while Max Bramble nailed two hits. Joe Gluyas had a massive day at the
plate for SA with a double, a triple and four RBI. Callum Park and Carey McLeod
had three hits each, while a crucial relief outing from Tyson McKee (1.2IP, 1H,
0ER, 4K) kept the Country NSW bats at bay late.

 

U16 – New South Wales 8-6 Victoria Blue

A big third inning from
New South Wales proved the difference as they defeated Victoria Blue 8-6. Dante
Caruso had a great day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a walk, two doubles and
an RBI, while Chris Burke was the only Victorian to claimed two RBI on the
night. Liam McCallum was one of NSW’s best with bat in hand, claiming three
hits and an RBI, while Thomas Horne and Ky Jackson each picked up an RBI. Seb
Mathews threw the only two scoreless innings of the ballgame for New South
Wales in only 18 pitches, only giving up the one hit.

 

U16 – Queensland 11-6 Western Australia

Queensland scored early
and survived a late Western Australian comeback to claim the final game on
Diamond 1, 11-6. Evan Perera was the only WA player to claim multiple hits,
with a double, two singles and an RBI. Dylan Walsh and Calvin Eissens combined to throw the final 2.1 scoreless innings for WA, with both claiming a strikeout
each. The Natale brothers proved difficult for WA to get out, with Angelo going
4-for-4, scoring twice and driving in three runs, while Franco claimed two RBI.
Jack Waters squashed a Western Australian comeback, striking out five in 2.1
innings of relief to end the ballgame.

 

U18 – Queensland 14-4 Australian Capital Territory

The ACT and Queensland
played out a tight ballgame on Diamond 1 until Queensland pulled away late to
record a 14-4 win.  Nick Hosie and Mitch
Edwards had two RBI each for the ACT, while Mark Zhang was the other ACT player
to claim multiple hits. Ethan Elliott and Kodey Wilford combined for 4.1
innings of scoreless relief, neither allowed a hit in their time on the mound
for QLD. Dermot Fritsch had two hits and three RBI on the day, while Ryoto Kusomoto
had two RBI. Conor Laverty had one of his best games of the tournament so far,
with four hits and three runs leading off for QLD.

 

U18 – South Australia 11-10 New South Wales Country

South Australia trailed
8-0 against New South Wales Country in the bottom of the sixth, but pulled off
a stirring comeback to walk-off NSW Country 11-10. South Australia scored all
11 of their runs in the final four innings as Nick Platten worked a bases
loaded walk to claim an unlikely victory. Hits were shared for NSW Country,
with Jake Amos, Rixon Wingrove and Thomas Holland all claiming three, one of
Wingrove’s hits saw him take Jack Stead deep for a three run home run. Mason
Clavell claimed three hits for SA, while Griffin Weber and Tyson Arnold had two
RBI apiece. Morgan Ruchel kept Country NSW quiet late, with 1.2 innings of
perfect relief, enabling SA’s bats to get the job done in the final frame.

 

U18 – Victoria White 10-9 New South Wales

Victoria White bounced out
of the blocks to lead 7-0, and survived a comeback from New South Wales to
claim a tight 10-9 victory. Jacob Krkovski and Flynn Stallworthy had three RBI
each for NSW, while Blake Brown made his only hit of the day count, driving in
two runs. Hits were shared for Victoria White, with Rhys De Highden and Lachlan
Medew picking up three each, while Sam Drummond had two RBI to go with his two
hits. Kyle Morrison had a great day on the mound, striking out four and only
giving up two hits in three innings on the mound for Victoria White.


U18 – Western Australia 3-1 Victoria Blue

Western Australia threw
exceptionally well to hold a potent Victoria Blue lineup to one run, as they
claimed a 3-1 win on Diamond 3. Aiden Willis claimed the only RBI of the game
for Victoria Blue, while Jack Dunn and Cooper Goodman claimed the other two
hits for Victoria Blue. Alex Hall had a great day at the plate for WA, with the
Perth Heat representative claiming three hits and a walk. Dawson Summers picked
up two RBI for WA, while on the mound, Frazer Brice (5IP, 2H, 1ER, 4K) and Ryan
Nuttall (4IP, 1H, 0ER) were near untouchable, leading the WA boys to their
fourth win of the tournament.

U16 – South Australia
11-2 Victoria White

A strong pitching performance from South Australia enabled
them to defeat Victoria 11-2. Zac Stroud and Kane Woolman struck out six
between them and only gave up a total of three hits in seven innings. Woolman
also starred with bat in hand, claiming a pair of RBI on the day to go with his
solid pitching performance. Joe Gluyas and Liam Bull both had a pair of RBI on
the day too, while Brodie Arriola crossed the plate three times. Cooper de Haan
had two of Victoria White’s three hits, while pinch-hitter Chris Nielsen
claimed the other.

 

U16 – New South Wales
11-2 Queensland

Queensland again took an early lead against New South Wales,
but the Blue Sox got their bats going and pulled away, defeating the Bandits
11-2. Jack Lee and Daniel Bannon were the leaders in RBI on the day for NSW
with three each, while Zach Lawrence had three hits and scored twice. Aidan
Torpey threw a strong five innings, only giving up two earned runs. Franco
Natale and catcher JD Winlaw picked up a hit and an RBI each for Queensland.
Jake Burns finished the job for NSW on the mound, with two scoreless innings,
allowing only one base runner.

 

U16 –Western
Australia 13-6 New South Wales Country

A tight ballgame was blown wide open by WA in the fifth
inning, as the piled on eight runs and ended up defeating NSW Country 13-6.
Blake Monaghan and Mitch Bacon were strong in relief for WA, combining for
three perfect innings of relief, while with bat in hand, Cody Nicholas and Zach
Holland both had three RBI each. Tristan Watts claimed three RBI of his own for
NSW Country, with Josh Banks and Ethan Keane the other NSW Country players to
drive in runs.

 

U16 - Victoria Blue
11-9 Australian Capital Territory (F/8)

The first extra innings ballgame of the tournament saw the
Australian Capital Territory’s game fall just short, as Victoria Blue made the
most of the tiebreaker rules in the 8th inning to claim an 11-9 win.
Zac Skinner made the most of his one hit, with three RBI on the day for
Victoria while Reece Longstaff also had a solid day with two RBI from his two
hits. ACT’s Stuart Tharle claimed three hits and an RBI, while the Victorian
bats were cooled by Riley Watson, with the ACT reliever striking out three
hitters and only giving up one unearned run.

 

U18 – Victoria Blue
7-2 Queensland

Behind a strong start from Matt Beattie, Victoria Blue
toppled Queensland 7-2 in the opening game on Diamond 1 this morning. Beattie
struck out four and only gave up one earned run in his four innings on the
mound, while the bullpen also found some form, with Blake Hodgson and Jamie
Young combining for a scoreless final five innings. Ciaran Palmer had a strong
day at the plate, claiming two RBI from his three hits. Easton Ray drove in the
two Queensland runs on the day, while Ryota Kusumoto only allowed one
base-runner in 2.2 innings of relief.

 

U18 – New South Wales
8-3 Western Australia

Host state NSW again performed strongly, defeated Western
Australia 8-3. Right fielder Henry Groth and Mitchell Driver had two RBI each,
with Groth, Alex Brook and Luke Passmore
all claimed a pair of hits. Jett Wright and Josh Greenham each had three hits
during the game, with Greenham driving in two of WA’s three runs. Coen Wynne
had another solid start for NSW, only giving up one earned run in 4.2 innings,
while Mitch Driver continued his strong form this tournament, conceding no
earned runs in 2.1 innings of relief.

 

U18 – Country New
South Wales 9-8 Victoria White

Victoria White flew out of the blocks but an incredible
comeback from NSW Country saw them take 9-8 walkoff win in the final game on
Diamond 3. Alex Barling and Hamish Foreman each picked up 2 RBI, while John
Paul Callil played his leadoff role to perfection, picking up 3 hits and
stealing a base. Aaron Griffiths threw well in relief for NSW Country, only
giving up one unearned run and striking out three in 3.1 innings. Rixon
Wingrove showed his power and speed, with two doubles and a triple as well as
two RBI, while Jake Amos again impressed, driving in a pair of NSW Country
runners.

 

U18 –  Australian Capital Territory 7-5 South Australia

Some solid hitting through the middle inning saw the ACT
defeat South Australia in the final game on Diamond 2 for the day. Julian
Paramonov had a perfect day at the plate for the ACT, going 3-for-3 with an
RBI, while Jordan Kelly had two hits and two RBI of his own. Jake Green
shouldered the piching load for the ACT, going 8.2 innings and only giving up
two earned runs. Wade Chant was one of SA’s best, claiming three hits and an
RBI, while Todd Marshall and Tom Norley kept the ACT at bay with 2.2 combined
scoreless innings to end the ballgame for SA.
