Preston 0 vs Blackburn 6

Essendon claimed an 18-1 mercy rule win over Cheltenham on Ladies Day at Boeing Resrve, as Gareth Formisano carried a no-hitter into the seventh (and final) dig as the Bombers were able to put offence and defence together on the one day.

A three run opening stanza followed by four in the second put this one away early for the home team.

Aided by the continued outstanding form from Josh Davies (4 from 4, two home runs and a double, 7 RBI’s) and Dean McIntyre (3 from 4, HR and 2 doubles, 3 RBI’s) the Bombers shelled three Rustlers’ hurlers for 15 hits.

The Fitzroy Lions go into Christmas playing .500 ball having snapped a six game losing streak with a come from behind win against Moorabbin.

The two clubs have developed quite a rivalry across the past few season and after playing off against each other in last year’s Division 2 final, there is a healthy rivalry between the two Clubs.

After getting the better of the Lions last week, Moorabbin again came out the aggressor, jumping to a 3-0 lead through 5.0 innings. It wasn’t until the seventh before Fitzroy were able to hit the scoreboard scoring a pair, adding two more in the bottom of the eighth to put them in front for the remainder of the ballgame.

Brock Pawley was outstanding again for the Lions, starting as DH, he had two hits on the day (including the single which plated the go ahead run) and threw four scoreless innings in relief. Pawley now has eight hits in his past three appearances for the Lions. Alex Turlea picked up three hits on the day, while Tom Wilson and Reese Gregory finished with two hits each.

The loss sees Moorabbin drop from top spot in the Eastern Conference, but still enter the Christmas break in second spot, setting up a run at finals berth this season.

After going down 3-1 to Sandringham at Surrey Park last week, Melbourne arrived at Tulip Street determined to achieve a different result this time around. That they did, defeating Sandringham 12-2 in seven innings.

Demon starter Evan Brisintine was strong over five innings, shutting down the Royals to just four hits and no runs, before handing the ball to Andy Mann who gave up the Royals only runs.

While Royals starter Reed Mason gave up ten hits and seven runs in five innings of work before relievers Jayson Arthur and Sam Street conceded a combined five runs in two innings.

Offensively, Newport finished Sunday’s contest with 13 hits to Moorabbin’s 7. The seventh inning proved to be a pivotal inning as Newport recorded four runs to stretch their lead.

Werribee 5 vs Malvern 2

A three run first and stellar pitching by returning hurler Wes Dejong propelled the Giants to a well-deserved victory in the last game of the calendar year.

Werribee added another run in the bottom of the fifth and a final insurance marker in the seventh, which was plenty of support for Dejong. He finished with eight strong innings and five strikeouts on 87 pitches.

Trent Pantalleresco pitched the ninth, ceding two runs.

At the plate, four batters—Oliver Box, John Curnow, Matt Howe and Ryan Blazer—each recorded two hits with one of Howe’s going for two bases and Box slugging a home run and knocking in four.

As reigning head coaches from last year’s Division 1 Grand Final Series, Essendon’s Peter Giles has been named to lead the West Monarchs All-Star team, while Cheltenham’s Adam Blackley will lead the Eastern Reds team with Blackley saying he hopes the All-Star only feeds the long held rivalry.

“We have always speculated which side of the competition is stronger and now we actually get to see” said Blackley.

“Obviously, this year it is an exhibition game and the players only get bragging rights but it would be great to give them something to play for in the future”.

“I'm excited to be a part of it this year and hope the Victorian public can really get behind it and really make it something that we look forward to each year”.

The Western Monarchs will be made up by players from: Essendon, Geelong, Fitzroy, Newport, Preston and Sandringham. While the Eastern Reds will consist of players from: Melbourne, Blackburn, Moorabbin, Springvale, Waverley and Cheltenham.

Coaches are currently in the process of selecting their teams and announcements of teams to follow in the coming weeks.

Entry to the game will be FREE, and we welcome all family, friends and supporters of the players and Victorian Baseball to come out to the Ballpark on January 18 and help us celebrate our great sport on what we hope will be a very special, memorable and the first of many All-Star Games in the future.

The best game of the weekend took place in Chelsea. A back-and-forth contest ended after the Bulldogs tallied thrice in the 11th inning to win an epic 8-6 game.

Connor Allen, Footscray’s young backstop, hit a clutch extra inning two-run double, before scoring a much needed insurance run.

Trent Winford
amazingly threw the entire game for the Dolphins.

Currently holding the last finals-eligible spot, Footscray head to St Kilda next week.

In a rematch of last year’s Grand Final, the Rebels flipped the script and downed the Pumas, 7-3.

Scoreless through four, Pakenham tallied first in the top of the fifth, only to see Mulgrave answer right back in their home half. The same pattern repeated itself in the seventh. The eighth is where the Rebels secured the victory.

Scoring another single run in the eighth, the Pumas then allowed five to provide the winning margin.

Stuart Brunton started for Pakenham, falling one out short of a complete game. For the victorious side, Liam Richardson threw five innings, striking out four. Matthew Young finished the game.

At the dish, Caleb Poole scored three times, Stuart Phillips went 2-2 and Mitchell Upton drove in three.

Missed opportunities were the story at Tom O’Halloran Field on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.

The Saints left an ungodly 16 men on base—including the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the ninth—in a demoralizing 6-5 defeat.

Up 1-0 after one and 2-1 after two, St Kilda surrendered two runs in the third and another one in the fourth in a game they would trail the rest of the way.

Multiple times the Saints got within one run but the Hunters were too strong on this day.

Tied with Pakenham with identical 8-5 records, St Kilda hosts 4-9 Footscray to finish off the 2016 portion of the schedule on Sunday.
