In the top of the fourth, the visiting Dolphins held a commanding 7-1 lead, thanks to plating three runs in each the first and fourth frames.

On this day, however, the Bulldogs were not to be denied. They scored twice in the fifth, once in the sixth and then three times in both the seventh and eighth innings. Chelsea’s lone other run came in the top of the seventh.

Footscray’s batters were led by Dean Hayhow (four hits), Troy Davis (two doubles) and Haydn Lucas-Paton (three hits, including a triple and the go ahead RBI in the home half of the eighth.)

Across the diamond, Andy Kuo had three knocks of his own, including a two RBI double, and played stellar defense in the field. Wilson Yeh got the start for Chelsea.

Emphatically bouncing back from their first loss of the season, the St Kilda Saints once again relied upon a complete team effort to earn the victory.

Scoreless entering the fourth frame, the Saints plated three runs in the fourth, two in the fifth, and four in the sixth to give St Kilda all the runs they would need.

The Hunters answered back with single tallies in the seventh and eighth before scoring twice in the bottom of the ninth to provide the final margin.

Solid as always, Jarrod MacEachern did his job as the St Kilda starter. Playing shortstop for the first time this season, Mariano Favia was stellar; ditto for fellow left side infielder Todd Clarkson.

Bryan Livett headlined the hitters, using his speed to collect three hits.

If a 10-1 game can be closer than the score indicated, this Grand Final rematch certainly was.

After the first inning the Rebels held a 3-1 advantage. Three scoreless frames followed before Mulgrave added one run in each of the fifth, seventh and eighth innings before plating four insurance markers in the top of the ninth.

Scott Dale started and went six innings, before giving way to Shaun Fahy.

For the victors, Matthew Young was stellar on the mound. Liam Richardson closed the game out, allowing only a single run.

At the plate, Ben Hardman had four hits for the Rebels.

Doncaster 14 vs Malvern 9

It’s now how you start it’s how you finish.

At least that old cliché applied to Doncaster on Sunday in their 14-9 victory over host Malvern.

Down 5-0 after three frames, the Dragons were buoyed the rest of the way by solid hitting up and down the lineup. Every batter had at least one hit and reached base twice.

Shaky at first, starter Simon Fitzmaurice settled down beginning in the fourth, ceding just one hit in the next four frames before giving way to Ben Utting who threw the final three innings and also knocked in three runs.

Harris pitched six innings for Blackburn in their 4-2 win, surrendering eight hits for two runs while striking out six.

Despite winning the hit battle 9-8, Geelong struggled to get enough runs on the board. Rudy Jaramillo received the loss after pitching seven innings of work, allowing four runs while walking three and striking out six.

An impressive outing from Brian Kloppe led the Cheltenham Rustlers to a 5-2 victory over the Sandringham Royals at Farm Road.

Kloppe held the Royals scoreless through 6.2 innings of work, with Sandringham’s only runs coming in the seventh frame off of closer Phil Richmond.

Royals starter Reed Mason settled down following a busy second inning to pitch five scoreless frames, with young reliever Mitchell Wilcox giving up a run in the sixth.

Fitzroy’s early 1-0 lead was quickly overshadowed as Melbourne countered with three runs in the bottom of the first, from there they never looked back claiming an 8-2 victory.

Adam Pahos had the start for Melbourne, allowing just the one earned run off of seven hits in six frames.

Melbourne’s offense provided Pahos with plenty of run support; Rob Hondromatidis, Nathan Aron, Matt Kent and Matt Blackmore all finished with two hits each.

Zach Rhodes scored Fitzroy’s only other run, going deep in the seventh inning for his first home run of the season.

No Game Summary Provided.

A solid starting performance from Springvale’s import pitcher David Fischer was undone by a flurry of runs from the Bombers in the fifth and seventh innings, as Essendon went on to claim a 10-2 win.

Three hits apiece from Tim Sullivan and Scott McIntyre contributed to Essendon’s convincing 10-0 lead by the middle of the eighth.

Australia has claimed the silver medal at the WBSC U23 World Cup and a number of all-important WBSC World Ranking Points after falling to Japan 10-3 in the World Championship Game this morning.

Despite out-hitting Japan 10-7, two big innings from the World #1 baseball nation proved the difference, with Japan scoring four runs in the fourth, and five runs in the sixth inning.

Australia’s performances at the U23 World Cup have been fantastic, and are rewarded with a silver medal, as well as 551 WBSC World Ranking Points, which will come in handy leading into the next international competition cycle.

After a scoreless start to the ballgame, Australia took an early lead after a couple of strong hits. A single to Sam Kennelly and a double from Ben Leslie saw runners at second and third, and from there, it was all up to Aaron Whitefield, who drove in Kennelly and Leslie with a solid hit to right field, giving Australia a 2-0 lead in the third inning.

Detroit Tigers prospect and Sydney Blue Sox star Zac Shepherd showed his power and extended Australia’s lead to three in the fourth against the world’s baseball powerhouse, with a solo shot to left field.

Nick Veale had a fantastic start going through the early innings, working quickly and not letting the Japanese hitters settle into any rhythm. Veale put up three scoreless innings to begin the ballgame, but a forgettable fourth inning saw Japan claw four runs back and regain the lead.

Aaron Whitefield was the offensive star for Australia in the World Championship game, going 4-for-4 with two RBIs. Jacob Younis also had a strong day at the plate, claiming two hits.

Japan’s lead was extended in the seventh, with all nine hitters coming to the plate. A three-run home run from Taishi Hirooka capped off the inning, which included a costly error from Australia.

After coming into the U23 World Cup with a World Ranking of 13, Australia has punched well above their weight, recording victories against significant baseball nations including Chinese Taipei and Korea, and coming away with a well-earned silver medal.

The Werribee Giants have turned their Club pink to raise awareness around Breast Cancer in the latest round of the Victorian Summer Baseball League.

As a part of the day, every Werribee player wore pink tops and hats with the Clubhouse decorated with plenty of pink. Dugouts were also pinks as were the bases and the Pink Lady symbol was placed on the ground at each team’s entrance.

Now in its third year, Club Secretary Jessica Curnow says it’ an event the whole Club gets behind and supports.

“We even had one of our Under 12 boys, Harrison Green-Williams, who shaved his head on the day to raise money. He had been growing it since the start of the year” said Jessica.

“Everyone knows someone who has been affected by breast cancer with 42 women diagnosed in Australia each day. We want to continue to raise awareness and much needed funds to help ensure Australians affected by breast cancer are provided with the very best support, treatment and care.”

More than just an awareness campaign, the Werribee Baseball Club has managed to raise just over $1,400 to date and have an online fundraising page still open for people to donate until Friday.

As we all know, Club events and fundraisers don’t just happen with Jessica Curnow adding that the Club is extremely thankful for all the help they were able to receive to get Werribee’s third success Pink Day off the ground.

“Sarah Smith and myself were the main organisers of the event this year.”

“Along with the help of Lori Collins, Shelby Parrish, Ben Bavdek and so many more people at the Club.”

“We truly appreciate the help everyone could to make it one of the biggest events we hold at the Club.”

Even better for the Giants, the Club’s Firsts, Seconds and Thirds all recorded wins on the day.
