In a windy affair that featured a combined 32 hits (eight for extra bases) and an equal amount of runs, host Chelsea steamrolled Footscray, 23-9, in seven innings to start their season on a winning note.
The second inning proved decisive. The Dolphins plated 17 runs in myriad ways, including a home run apiece by Trent Wilford, Andy Kuo and Ryan Lee.
Lucas Lu got the win for Chelsea, allowing three runs over two and one-third innings, allowing two hits, walking three and striking out four.
Allowing 16 runs in one frame usually will garner you a loss. So it was for the Bulldogs’ John Baker.
Chelsea visits Mulgrave next week while Footscray goes for its first win at Tom O’Halloran Field in St Kilda.

In a rematch of last season’s Grand Final (won by Pakenham), host Mulgrave turned the tables, upending the Pumas, 13-4, to send an early-season message.
Starting five new players from last year’s top-of-the-ladder squad—Murad Mohammad, Donnie Poole, Liam Richardson, Mitch Upton and Joel Stubs—the always solid hitting side didn’t miss a beat.
On the mound, Matthew Young pitched the first four innings, Stuart Phillips the middle three and Stubs the final frames.
The star of the game, though, was Ben ‘Hank’ Hardman who slugged five hits in six at-bats.

The Saints started their season out perfectly, whitewashing the Hunters, 25-0, at breezy Bonbeach.
Starting hurler Jarrod MacEachern pitched brilliantly, allowing only a single hit and one walk while striking out six.
St Kilda batted around in the first and never looked back. All 10 Saints got on base and the defense performed admirably. Shortstop and leadoff hitter Paul Puskar consistently set the tone with four hits.
St Kilda has their home opener on tap next Sunday; Ormond Glenhuntly, meanwhile, caravans out to Pakenham.

With import Ballarat import Rob Shaw keen to stamp his authority on Summer League Baseball – and with the Ballarat City Club anxious to improve on a very creditable last season at this level – the drumming of rain on dugouts just minutes before game time put a literal dampener on the start of the summer baseball campaign.
The umpiring decision to not take the field in early drizzle was vindicated as rain became heavier and more persistent after the call had been made to abandon the contest – which under current match conditions will not be rescheduled.

Led by the sterling starting pitching of Werribee’s Trent Evins, the Giants opened up their summer campaign with a 7-2 road victory over the Williamstown Wolves.
In five innings of work, Evins walked four but surrendered only two hits while striking out three. Entering in the sixth, Josh Lee finished the game, fanning five and ceding just two runs on four hits. Lee wasn’t too shabby at the plate, either, slugging a triple and knocking in three.
Behind the plate, Oliver Box did yeoman’s work and also contributed two singles in three at-bats.
Next week the Giants attempt to continue their winning ways on the road at Upwey while the Wolves hit the road seeking their first win at Berwick.
Long time Team Australia member David Kandilas will prepare for the World Baseball Classic in different colours this season, after the veteran outfielder put pen to paper with the Canberra Cavalry for the 2016/17 Australian Baseball League Season.
Kandilas played a vital role in Team Australia’s most recent tournament Honkbalweek Haarlem in The Netherlands, capped off by an extra innings walk-off single against Curaçao to seal Team Australia’s place in the Preliminary Final.
After spending the first five seasons of the ABL in Sydney, the veteran will be patrolling the outfield grass at Narrabundah Ballpark this season as his preparations ramp up for the World Baseball Classic in March.
Currently ranked 13th in the world, Australia will take on China, Cuba and #1 ranked Japan in their group at the World Baseball Classic, which will get underway at the famous Tokyo Dome in March.
Kandilas is excited by the prospect of playing for the Cavalry this season.
“I’m really excited about playing in Canberra,” Kandilas said.
“I’ve heard nothing but good things from guys that have played there, and it’ll be great preparation for meleading up to the World Baseball Classic next year.”
Kandilas and the Cavalry get their 2016/17 ABL campaign underway on the 17th of October in Brisbane against defending champions, the Brisbane Bandits proudly presented by WellDog.

Jess will be a big loss to the organisation and will be sadly missed by all. Jess has been a valuable employee during her time at BV and we are very grateful for her contribution to the sport.
Given the timing with the start of the season, we will start recruiting for a replacement. During the transition period, the BV office may experience some difficulties but it is hoped that the inconvenience to members is kept to a minimum.
Strategies are currently being put in place to ensure the season runs smoothly but we do ask for your patience.
We wish Jess all the best for her future.

With the wind blowing out for the first time in years at the Ramdome, hitters could have been excused for thinking they would be stepping to the plate with an advantage. For the first eight innings that wasn't the case as a non-national pitching duel was the story of this game. Newport's Jimmy Jenson struck-out 8, walked 2 and allowed 7 hits while Sandringham's Reed Mason struck-out 10, walked 2 and allowed just 2 hits. The game took a turn in an epic ninth when relievers were brought into the game. After surviving a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the eighth, Sandringham was able to put on six 6 and restrict the visiting Rams to just to one and take the points in their season opener.
With the wind blowing out to left-field it was a real pitching dual through the first five frames until a pitching change saw Essendon break the game open. For the defending champs, Gareth Formisano and Luke Abels were outstanding on the hill, holding the Pirates scoreless, while Edward Kline-Marantelli showed his potential with a solid offensive and defensive game.

A towering home run from Adam Burton set Melbourne up in a game where they were never really headed. Burton also had 4 RBIs in a game where he just continued to get it done at the plate. Alex Hondo chipped in with three base knocks and a diving catch that saw him get a little too up close and personal with the left field hoarding. Division 1 debutants Adam Pahos and Xander Barling showed they belonged in the top grade, with Barling singling in his first Division 1 at-bat and Pahos with 3.1 scoreless innings of relief work.
Andy Mann came into the game and close out the win for Melbourne, while youngsters Rhys DeHighden and Oliver McMahon played solid defence and made quality contributions at the plate.
The Lions return to Division-1 didn't go all to plan. After conceding a four-spot in the first, kick started by RBI singles from Geelong's Rudy Jaramillo and Lachlan Medew, a solo shot from Tom Dicker kept the Lions within striking distance but they were never able to make inroads.
Chris Webb for reached base three times for the Baycats as Jaramillo would go on to pick up the Win on the back of ten strikeouts through his five innings of work.
A gutsy 114 pitch outing from Brock Pawley wouldn't be enough as 14 strike-outs and 10 runners LOB would come back to haunt Fitzroy. Two hits each from Dicker (HR, double) and Ryan Mitchell (single, double) were the best for the Lions.
Story courtesy of Fitzroy Baseball Club
One of the oldest Clubs in Victoria and long heralded as the ‘family Club’, Fitzroy Baseball Club is set to make history this weekend as they name three Wilsons to start their Division-1 game against Geelong.
Carl Wilson (son of Life Member Chris Wilson) will be joined by his younger cousins Tom and Ben (sons of Life Member Peter Wilson) in Fitzroy’s starting nine for the first time.
The three boys did appear in a game together briefly against Werribee last season when Ben Wilson was put into the game as a defensive replacement. This was the game that famously included an unassisted triple-play (sorry Werribee).
Provided Fitzroy start as named (and the rain stays away), Carl Wilson, the eldest of the three and regular first nine starter will start in left field: Tom another first nine regular will start in centre field while the youngest of the Wilsons and Division 2 Seconds premiership player Ben, (more affectionately known as 5-tool) will make a start at second base.
Sunday’s game will mark Fitzroy’s return to Division 1 baseball and looks set to be a memorable one for the Club and the Wilson family. Best of luck to the boys.
As you would be well aware, the baseball community lost Ian McKenzie earlier this year after losing his battle with cancer. Ian was a valued, respected member of the baseball fraternity and his legacy within the game will be felt for many years to come.
Round 2 of the 2016/17 Victorian Baseball Summer League will be dedicated to Ian and we ask that each game played over the week of October 8-10, be played to honour Ian by wearing black arm bands.
There will also be a Memorial Game played on Saturday 8 October at Essendon Baseball Club between Essendon and Blackburn and we encourage members of the baseball community to attend and share a memory of ‘Macka’.
