Major League Baseball (MLB) officials have been inspecting facilities at Albert Park, Lismore, with an eye to establish training camps for international player development programs.

Lismore City Council Tourism and Events Manager Mitch Lowe said it was exciting to see overseas officials taking Lismore’s desire to become a national and international baseball hub seriously.

Lismore is positioning itself as the home of baseball operations in Australia, with a $4.47 million facility upgrade currently before the NSW Government for consideration.

Baseball Australia has indicated it would commit to hosting key national events, international team training camps and National Team activities in Lismore for at least five years if the upgrade was funded.

“A world-class facility in Lismore would see Albert Park become Baseball Australia’s premier complex and place the city on the world stage as a baseball hub,” Lowe said.

“In baseball circles, Lismore is regarded as one of the most significant regions in the country, with a reputation of nurturing and developing skilled players, providing quality facilities and running major competitions and events. We want to take this to the next level and put Lismore on the map as a national and international baseball facility.”

Lismore recently won the rights to host the Bendigo Bank Little League and Senior League Baseball Championship for the next five years. Lowe said the events are just the tip of the iceberg, with an upgraded facility enabling Lismore to host national and international baseball events, training camps and programs year round.

Lowe went on to say that an upgraded facility would inject more than $9 million per annum into Lismore’s economy.

“This project is not a ‘build it and they will come’ exercise. Both Lismore City Council and Baseball Australia are committed to hosting and staging a large number of events and camps which will benefit the city significantly,” Lowe said.

“It's fantastic to have Major League Baseball officials in Lismore inspecting our facilities to see what programs and events could be possible if an upgrade occurs. We could see a raft of international activity at Albert Park in years to come. With the support of government and partners this project is close to being a reality.”

MLB Executive Chris Haydock, who is in Australia currently attending the MLB Academy in the Gold Coast, said he was impressed with the facilities on offer in Lismore and that with the intended investment, the facility would form a great base for elite high performance camps.

“I can certainly see the vision for Albert Park Baseball Complex and what the facility upgrade would deliver,” said Haydock.

“Having high grade facilities to conduct our international player development programs are a priority for MLB and from what I can see today, Albert Park has the foundations of a great facility and just needs investment.”

In a great show of support for the project, Haydock committed to send the world's best baseball facilities expert, Murray Cook, to Lismore in the coming weeks to offer his vast experience to the project. Cook was responsible for redesigning the Sydney Cricket Ground to host the MLB Opening Series in 2014.

Boral, one of Australia’s leading suppliers of building and construction materials, has put pen-to-paper on a two-year partnership with Baseball Australia to secure the presenting rights of the Australian Emeralds Women’s Baseball Team.

Women’s baseball continues to grow in Australia and attracted significant attention recently when The Emeralds brought home a bronze medal at the 2014 IBAF Women’s World Cup in Miyazaki, Japan.

Boral is a great supporter of baseball in Australia and this new two-year agreement is in addition to their current support for the Australian Baseball League (ABL) as presenting partner of the ABL All Stars Game and the ABL Championship Series.

The Australian Emeralds presented by Boral, are currently ranked equal 3rd in the World and are currently preparing for the LG Presents WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup 2016 Gijang (Korea) to be hosted in Gijang City, South Korea, 3-11 September, 2016.

Boral’s support is a great boost to The Emeralds squad, ahead of team selection, according to Emeralds Coach Simone Wearne.

“Australia has a terrific women’s baseball program, and to receive this kind of recognition and support by a global leader like Boral, gives everyone involved in women’s baseball a really great boost,” said Wearne.

“The Boral support will go a long way to advancing our women’s World Cup program and will put us in the best position to focus on performance as we pursue a medal at this year’s IBAF World Cup.”

Currently there are 53,986 registered baseballers in Australia with participation growing at 10% per annum. Of that, women’s baseball makes up 13% of all participants (8,700) and is expected to eclipse 10,000 participants by 2019.

Boral’s CEO & Managing Director, Mike Kane, was pleased to confirm Boral’s support for The Australian Emeralds, and believes that they can achieve great things at the 2016 Women’s Baseball World Cup in South Korea.

“Boral is proud to support women’s baseball in Australia, and in particular support the Australian Emeralds’ bid for success at this year’s World Cup in South Korea. South Korea is an important market for Boral and I look forward to the Australian Emeralds making their mark in Gijang City in September,” said Mr Kane.

“The Australian Emeralds provides a great pathway for young women and girls who want to compete at the highest level in baseball, and Boral is delighted to be able to support that ambition.”

Baseball Australia Chief Executive Officer Brett Pickett has overseen significant growth in the women’s baseball program in his tenure and believes Boral’s further commitment to delivering elite baseball lays testament to their vision as a business, and their community foundations.

“Boral has become a global player in the building and construction materials industry but they have never forgotten their beginnings in grass-roots Australia,” said Pickett.

“Their backing of The Australian Emeralds presented by Boral, will provide extensive support not only to women’s baseball at the elite level, but from grass-roots women’s baseball all the way through to the national team.”

Baseball Australia is proud to launch the 2016 edition of the MLB Australian Academy Program (MLBAAP).

The Academy enables MLB Clubs to sign and develop young Australian and Oceania players on their home soil – allowing them to mature and minimise the impact of homesickness and cultural change when young players venture to the US for their first full season.

The Academy enables MLB Clubs to sign and develop young Australian and Oceania players on their home soil – allowing them to mature and minimise the impact of homesickness and cultural change when young players venture to the US for their first full season.

Held at Surfers Paradise Baseball Club, the MLB Australian Academy Program is a partnership between Baseball Australia and Major League Baseball, and aims to improve the quantity and quality of young baseball players coming out of the region. The Academy seeks to provide a pathway for elite players from this region to improve their skills in preparation for the rigours of professional and international baseball.

This year, 54 of the brightest young prospects from Australia, New Zealand and China will be put through their paces in a month long program of workouts and quality match practice.

Highlighting the group that will converge on Surfers Paradise for the next month are nine of the young men that represented Australia on the Spring Training Tour in Florida earlier this year.

Also well represented are the Southern Mariners Baseball Charter who will represent Australia in the Philippines. Ciaran Palmer, Jordan Barnett and Joshua Meyer will only attend the MLBAAP for one week as they prepare for the Senior League Asia-Pacific Championship after they won gold at the Australian Senior League Championship in May.

Baseball Australia Head of High Performance Glenn Williams is excited to get the 2016 program underway.

"We are excited to get the program started on the Gold Coast," Williams said.

"A lot of work has gone into the logistics and planning of the camp and it will be good to get the players on the field and to work."

"MLB (Major League Baseball) continue to be excellent supporters of our programs here in Australia. We have made some adjustments to the program for this year that will not only help players who are at the program physically, but will also up-skill the staff who will be able to pass on the benefits throughout our continually strong development state programs."

"MLB personnel will be in town to see the first week of the MLBAAP. We have two staff members who work internationally that will assist on field and we will continue discussions around some exciting initiatives we have on the horizon. The relationship with MLB in these kids of programs has been great and we are excited that initiatives that will be developed will be able to benefit players of all ages across the country."
