In the midst of an exciting growth phase which includes promotion to Division 2 of Baseball Victoria Summer League, a strong focus on junior development and improvements in its already outstanding facilities, Ballarat City Brewers Baseball Club is currently seeking a Club Coach to lead the club in the 2016/17 BVSL season.

The executive and committee of the Ballarat City Baseball Club view the Club Coach as a critical position not just for stimulating playing success and the ongoing development of players, but also to assist with creation of a strong club culture, the promotion of baseball locally and the development of initiatives to ensure the long term success of our 85-year-old club.

The Club Coach will be among key leadership figures within the club to drive positive change and attitude amongst members, to stimulate growth and prosperity, and ensure success on and off the field. As a club leader, the Club Coach responsibilities will promote the development of members into more productive and successful people (both within the club and outside it), while seeking to help build the club into one that others aspire to be like.

The history of baseball in Ballarat is rich, and whilst this golden era started slipping away 10-15 years ago, our immediate challenge is to return both our club and our sport to its halcyon days and beyond.

The Club Coach will be afforded the maximum possible support, both from the committee and in the form of assistant coaches, specialist coaches, training coaches and team managers. Subject to discussions with the successful candidate, we are planning to appoint two Assistant Coaches, Team Managers and a Training Co-ordinator to support the Club Coach.

A brief outline of the key responsibilities of the Club Coach is below:

Game day team management, strategy and leadership of the Division 2 firsts team

Input into the appointment of coaches across all grades, along with assistant and specialist coaches

An active game day interest (wherever practical) in the Division 2 seconds team

Facilitation and co-ordination of club training – minimum of once weekly

A lead role in club selection meetings

Facilitation of junior clinics and other activities to support the club development program, along with an active role in coaching and mentoring junior players (wherever practical)

Conducting a mentoring program for the ‘next generation’ of club leaders

Attendance at all club functions and events

A proactive role in the marketing and promotion of the club, including availability for marketing opportunities/events and accessibility to the media

Assistance in liaising with governing bodies to secure support, funding and resources for the development of baseball in the Ballarat region

Input into the long-term plan and strategic direction of the club

Assistance in seeking and delivering value/exposure for club sponsors

A remuneration package is negotiable based on skills and experience.

Baseball Australia are proud to announce the 24 men that will represent Team Australia at the annual Honkbal Tournament, in Haarlem, Netherlands between 15-24 July.

Wilson Lee, Tom Bailey, Andrew Campbell, Jacob Younis and Aaron Sayers will represent Team Australia for the first time, while veterans Trent Oeltjen and Luke Hughes headline a group with a good combination of youth and experience.

Another notable inclusion in the squad is pitching coach Jim Colborn. Jim represented four MLB teams, was named an All-Star with the Milwaukee Brewers, and threw a no-hitter with the Kansas City Royals during his playing career.

Team Australia Manager Jon Deeble is impressed with the quality of the squad.

“We have picked an exciting group which has plenty of experience, as well as some promising up and coming ball players,” Deeble said.

“This will be a tough tournament with Japan and Taiwan always proving tough, however we are looking forward to the challenge.”

Honkbal is an annual tournament that pits Team Australia against strong opposition from Chinese Taipei, Japan, Curacao and host nation, the Netherlands.

Baseball Australia is delighted with the confirmation by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board to support the inclusion of Baseball and Softball at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.

Baseball and Softball will be presented to the IOC general assembly as a part of a five-sport package, along with surfing, karate, skateboarding and sport climbing. A final vote on the composition of the sports program for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will be taken at the full IOC meeting in Rio de Janeiro in August, and, if approved, it would constitute "the most comprehensive evolution of the Olympic program in modern history," according to the IOC’s official release.

Baseball Australia CEO Brett Pickett also welcomed the news.

“Confirmation by the IOC Executive Board, that they will support baseball’s inclusion in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, is another great step forward for baseball in Australia,” said Pickett.

“Australia has a proud tradition of Olympic baseball, having secured Silver at the 2004 Athens Olympics.”

“The Southern Thunder, Australia’s national men’s team, is ranked amongst the best 16 teams in the world (ranked 13th), having recently qualified for next year’s World Baseball Classic and we believe we are well positioned for Olympic qualification should we get final approval for inclusion in Rio at the August IOC Session.”

“This announcement today is another step forward for baseball in Australia and gives a great boost to all those who have worked tirelessly, to get baseball reinstated in the Olympics.”

“Baseball participation numbers continues to grow at a grass-roots level across Australia, and for baseball to be reinstated to the Olympics would provide a clear pathway for our best emerging talent.”

“With Liam Hendriks (Oakland Athletics), Warwick Saupold (Detroit Tigers) and Peter Moylan (Kansas City Royals) currently playing in the MLB and dozens of Australians playing in the Minor Leagues in the US, and the rising level quality of Australian Baseball League, Baseball in Australia is in a healthy position and this would be a great recognition to the entire baseball family.”

Unfortunately due to work commitments, club coach Matthew Lawman has made the tough decision to step aside as Club Coach for the time being.  Matt is currently working on a significant work project that requires long night shifts and weekend work and is expected to continue through to December.

As such, he cannot physically be around the club as much as his coaching role requires for the preseason and into December.

In true character with Matty's commitment to the club and the players, he has made the tough, and selfless decision to advise the club that he just can't fill the role in at this point.  Dean Malthouse will take on the role as Head Coach of the Club on an interim basis until Matty's work commitments can be reassessed later in the year.

Dean brings a wealth of experience to the role.  He played Claxton Shield baseball representing Victoria as a 15 year old and played College Baseball in the US from 2006 - 2010 (for Texarkana (NJCAA 2006-2008) and Southern Arkansas (NCAA Div 2 2008-2010).  In his role as Assistant Coach last season Dean worked alongside Matty in what was a significant season of development and progress for the club.

Dean won the RAMS MVP last season and is widely recognised as one of the best defensive catchers in Victorian baseball.  Dean is also a 3rd generation RAM who has played at our club since he was 6 years old.

The Newport Baseball Club is very excited about what season 2016/17 has in store as they look to build on the great work that Matt Lawman, Dean Malthouse and Dean Anglin have achieved so far.

Although he has been forced to step aside for a short time, Matty will still be a strong part of the RAMS coaching structure and Division 1 campaign for the coming season.

The Club thanks Matty for his commitment to NBC and what he has achieved, we look forward to his return in the near future.
