Eastern Athletics vs. Manly

The first game of the tournament did not disappoint, with Manly and Eastern Athletics locked in a tight battle throughout, but Manly came out on top in the end, 5-4. Aiden Torpey and Thomas Newbold made for a formidable tandem on the mound for Manly, striking out 9 Athletics hitters. Torpey showed some promise at the plate too, driving in a pair for RBIs. Reece Longstaff struck the ball well, picking up hits and two RBIs for the Athletics. Koetsu Sakamoto threw three solid innings of relief, only conceding one hit. Aiden Torpey nailed a walkoff RBI triple in the bottom of the seventh to give Manly a morale boosting win.

Geelong vs. Perth Metro Central Firebirds

Perth Metro Central and Geelong played out a tight tussle early, before the Firebirds pulled away, tacking on six runs in the third to take the game 11-9. Zach Holland threw exceptionally for Perth, striking out five and conceding no hits in 2.2 innings on the mound. Offensively, Ben Drew had himself a day, claiming a massive 5 RBIs, including a triple that scored two runs in the third. For Geelong, Jarryd Wood drove in a couple of RBIs, and Kobe Greenhalgh legged out a triple. Three runs in the bottom of the seventh wasn’t enough for Geelong, who were just beaten, despite getting out-hit 13-6.

Ryde vs. Adelaide Pirates

The Ryde Hawks came back from the brink against the Adelaide Pirates, scoring all of their eight runs in the sixth and seventh inning to take their first game of the tournament 8-4.  Zach Stroud threw four strong innings for the Pirates, giving up one hit and striking out four in the starting role. Brodie Arriola picked up two hits for the Pirates and was the only Pirates player to record more than one hit. Ryde’s bullpen threw exceptionally well, only giving up three hits in the last four innings. Luke Livian and Liam Spinks both had multiple RBI days for Ryde in a strong performance.

Northern Metros vs. Cronulla

A walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh gave Cronulla a hard fought 7-6 victory over Perth Metro North. Blake Cavill threw 2.1 strong innings for Cronulla, striking out five and only conceding one hit. Cavill was backed up well by Josh Pearl, who struck out four and only gave up one earned run. Bailey Curtis was the offensive spark plug for Cronulla, going 3-for-3 with four RBIs. Javier Pelkonen went 3-for-4 in a strong day at the plate for Northern Metros. Will Fullerton proved the hero, with a single to centre field to score the winning run in the bottom of the 7th.

Adelaide Waves vs. Swan Hills

Swan Hills jumped out of the blocks early, and withstood an early fightback from the Adelaide Waves to take out their opening game of the tournament, 8-2.  A strong all around pitching performance from Swan Hills lead them to a strong win, and with offence coming thick and fast from Mitch Bacon (3-for-4, 1RBI), the Swans pushed ahead.  The match highlight though came early, with Mitch Schofield nailing a home run to left field for the Swans in the first, tacking on three runs. Flynn Luders had 1.2 innings of perfect relief for the Waves, while Dylan Strickland claimed a hit and an RBI from one at bat.

Hills vs. Canberra

An early offensive onslaught from Hills rocked Canberra, and Hills eventually took the game 16-2. Hills put up 12 runs in the bottom of the first, with both Solomon Maguire and Liam McCallum both claiming inside the park home runs. Canberra fought back well after the first, driving two runs of their own in the second, thanks to RBIs from Phil-Jason Barbaro and Patrik Paramonov. Rohan Wood struck out four in two innings of work on the mound for Hills.

Eastern Phantoms vs. Gold Coast Pirates

The Gold Coast Pirates flew out of the blocks against the Eastern Phantoms, but the Phantoms came back bigger, tacking on six runs in the fifth to take the win 14-4. Zac Mansfield threw two shutout innings to start the Gold Coast well, striking out four in a strong performance. Gold Coast’s James Schultz nailed a bases clearing three RBI triple in the bottom of the first. Lachlan Waite was a big part of the Phantoms’ victory, throwing two perfect innings of relief and driving in three runs.

Brisbane North vs. Northern Diamondbacks

Two quality pitchers went head to head, with Brisbane’s Jonanthan Winlaw going head to head with the Diamondbacks’ Matthew Clute, and it was Winlaw’s Brisbane North who took the lead late, and held on for a 2-0 victory. Winlaw threw six shutout innings on the mound for Brisbane as well as giving his team the lead after an RBI sac fly. Matthew Clute threw 4.2 shutout innings for the Diamondbacks, striking out two. Julius Crino was the only Diamondbacks player to claim multiple hits.

Manly vs. Adelaide Waves

Manly’s offence got going early and often, plating 7 in the first, and they held on to take down the Adelaide Waves 20-8 on Field 1. The offensive load was shared by by Manly with Akira Bolek, Thomas Newbold and Kenshiro Nakashio all driving in multiple RBIs, with Newbold nailing a massive home run. Rion Sato picked up a pair of hits in the middle of the lineup for the Waves, while Dylan Strickland showed his speed on the base paths, swiping a bag and driving in two runs. Jacob Scott and Nick Borello combined for a nice double play in tough conditions.

Canberra vs. Geelong

Geelong got on the board first against Canberra, and off the back of some quality pitching, the Baycats got home, defeating the team from the nation’s capital 3-1. Nick Hau got the start on the mound for the Geelong, and threw four strong innings, only conceding one earned run. Hau also hit well, picking up two hits and an RBI. Connor Hickey came on in relief and threw strongly, Hickey also lead off with two hits and an RBI. Patrik Parmanov continued his good form from earlier in the day, going 2-for-3.

Swan Hills vs. Eastern Athletics

Swan Hills got on the board early and often against the Eastern Athletics, and the middle of the Swan Hills lineup was really impressive, leading the Swans to a 16-3 victory. Mitch Schofield followed up his home run earlier in the day with another multi-RBI game, while Zak Taylor and Daniel Carter combined for a solid effort on the mound. Teigan Otter claimed two hits and two RBIs batting in the three hole for the Eastern Athletics.

Perth Metro Central vs. Hills

A tight contest ensued in the final day of an action packed day one of Junior League action, with Perth Metro Central defeating Hills 8-4 in a tight contest at Diamond Sports SA. William Sherriff threw well early, striking out five batters through the first three innings. Rohan Wood picked up an 2-RBI double for Hills in the third courtesy of a home run to trim the margin. Some quality relief from Mitchell Vickery through the middle innings (2.1IP, 8K). Perth tacked on another two runs in the sixth to seal the deal.

Brisbane South vs. Eastern Athletics
Diamond 2 hosted a tight game early, but both Eastern Athletics and Brisbane South’s offences came alive in the middle innings, Brisbane South however just pipped the Athletics at the post, winning 12-11 in extra innings. Adam Smidt was the man on the mound for Brisbane South, throwing 3.2 innings of shutout baseball, striking out five in a solid performance. Offensively, the hits were shared for Brisbane South, however Nick Johnstone claimed three hits and an RBI in the nine-hole. Blake Townsend picked up three RBIs for the Athletics, and starting pitcher Oliver McMahon also picked up two RBIs.

Central Coast vs. Adelaide Armada
A tight tussle between Central Coast and the Adelaide Armada was blown wide open in the fifth inning, when the Armada’s Morgan Ruchel belted a 3-RBI triple that proved the difference as the Armada took the game 8-4. Despite being out hit nine to six, the Armada made the most of their opportunities, scoring six in the 5th inning. Anthony Moanaroa-Taylor threw five strong innings of relief, only conceding one earned run to go with his one hit on the day. Ethan Marchioro also nailed a triple for the Armada, while Will Kortekaas had two RBIs to his name.

BRONZE MEDAL GAME:
Eastern Phantoms vs. Adelaide Titans
The Eastern Phantoms have taken bronze in the inaugural Australian Senior League Championship after defeating the Adelaide Titans 12-2. Jack O’Loughlin got the Titans off to the best possible start, driving in the opening run in the ball game in the first. However the Phantoms were quick to respond, with starting pitcher Jess Williams driving two after legging out another triple.  Williams also threw a complete game for the Phantoms, striking out nine and giving up two earned runs in a strong performance. Sam Collier had three hits and three RBIs in the game and was one of Eastern Phantoms’ best offensive players.

Manly vs. Cronulla
Cronulla defeated Manly 7-6 in a see-sawing battle on Diamond 2. Manly’s bullpen came through strong, as Sam Blagg and Daniel Hill threw the final four innings giving up only one earned run between them. Hill also claimed two RBIs in a complete performance. Josh Gessner again continued his strong tournament, going 2-for-4 with an RBI for Manly. Cronulla leadoff man Zane Ross finished two hits and two RBIs on the game. Simon Parker threw strongly in relief for Cronulla, conceding only two hits and no earned runs from three innings.

CHAMPIONSHIP GAME:
Hills vs. Southern Mariners

The Southern Mariners have booked their ticket to the Philippines after defeating Hills 6-1 in a fantastic final at Albert Park Baseball Complex.

Jackson Boyd starred on the mound for the Mariners, throwing a complete game and conceding only one earned run in a standout performance. Boyd lost his perfect game in the top of the seventh, after Kaiden Costa nailed a groundball to left field. Jai Lyttleton was strong offensively, driving in three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Southern Mariners Head Coach Jack Larner was ecstatic with his team’s victory. “It was a great team effort, especially from Jackson Boyd.” Larner said.

“He was massive for us today, and we couldn’t be prouder of his efforts.”

“We’re really excited to represent Australia in the Philippines later this year, it’s going to be an amazing experience for the guys.”

The scoring didn’t get underway until the fourth inning, after Jayson Arthur drove in the first run of the game with a hit to right field.  Hills pulled a run back in the top of the seventh, but the damage was done, with the Mariners claiming a famous victory.

Congratulations to the Southern Mariners, the first winners of the Australian Senior League Championships.

The Mariners were a perfect 7 wins from 7 games as they closed out the final against the Hills, 6-1. Jackson Boyd spinning a pearl of a game, facing just one over the minimum in the 7 innings. The 2016 Championship Game was a perfect example how of the Southern Mariners Senior league side plays the game – fantastic pitching, solid defense with relentless pressure in the batter’s box and on the base paths resulting in long at bats, extra bases and short defensive innings.

Southern Mariners Head Coach Jack Larner was ecstatic with his team’s victory. “It was a great team effort, especially from Jackson Boyd.” Larner said.

“He was massive for us today, and we couldn’t be prouder of his efforts.”

The Mariners will now move on the Asia Pacific Championship in the Philippines in July, a journey well deserved for the Head Coach who has been ever resilient in fighting his ongoing health issues while being supported by his coaching staff, Brendan Wilson and Russell Ferguson.

Little League District Administrator Tom Dicker shared these comments, “Well done to the Southern Mariners. To continue their powerful State Championship performance with an undefeated National tournament is a testament to everyone involved in the Southern Mariner Charter, in particular; the players, coaches, supporting volunteers and the parents. Congratulations on creating history, everyone in Victoria is behind you while you represent Australia in the Philippines.”

Central Coast vs. Adelaide Armada
After a strong pool play, Central Coast have taken two losses in the last two days, putting them up against the Adelaide Armada, who came from behind on Day 5 to defeat Manly.  The Armada have won three of their six games this week, and defeated Central Coast 10-4 on Day 3.

CONSOLATION GAME – 10am – Diamond 2
Eastern Athletics vs. Brisbane South
After a winless start in pool play, the Eastern Athletics have come home with a bang, winning their last two games. Brisbane South will bring some form into this game, after taking out Cronulla 10-0 on Day 5. Brisbane South and the Eastern Athletics haven’t matched up against each other this tournament so far.

CONSOLATION GAME – 12.30pm – Diamond 2
Manly vs. Cronulla
Both Manly and Cronulla suffered losses on Day 5 of the competition, and after a winless tournament for Manly, they’ll be out to prove themselves in their final match of the tournament. Cronulla and Manly faced each other on Day 2 of the competition, and it was the Sharks who prevailed, 14-2.

BRONZE MEDAL GAME – 10.15am – Diamond 1
Adelaide Titans vs. Eastern Phantoms
The Bronze medal game sees the Adelaide Titans take on the Eastern Phantoms, and after a surprise loss in their semi final today, the Phantoms will be keen to make amends. The Titans pushed the Southern Mariners in their semi final, ultimately going down by 5, however their offence showed some serious ticket, pulling back a 13 run deficit.

GOLD MEDAL GAME – 2.30pm – Diamond 1
Hills vs. Southern Mariners
After a stirring 5-3 semi-final victory against the previously undefeated Eastern Phantoms, Hills have qualified for the gold medal game. Their opponents, the Southern Mariners are also undefeated, and will prove strong opposition in the Championship Game. The Mariners qualified for the gold medal game after a hard fought victory over the Adelaide Titans, and will look to their pitching depth to get them over the line.

Central Coast vs. Eastern Athletics
In a consolation game, Eastern Athletics claimed back-to-back victories with a 4-2 victory over Central Coast. Liam Evans threw an incredible complete game for the Athletics, striking out nine and only conceding one earned run. Rhys Neuhold again lead Central Coast’s offence, going 3-for-3 with an RBI. Neuhold also impressed on the mound for the Coasties in a losing cause. Offensively, Tiernan Culbert drove in two runs for the Eastern Athletics.

SF 1: Adelaide Titans vs. Southern Mariners
The Southern Mariners have booked their place in the inaugural Australian Senior League Championship final after taking care of the Adelaide Titans 17-12. The Mariners got off to the best possible start scoring 13 runs in the first two innings thanks to some consistent and powerful hitting. Leading off for the Mariners, Aiden Willis increased the lead in the second, after belting a line drive to right field to score another two runs. After some early errors and inconsistencies on the mound, the Adelaide Titans’ offense came alive in the middle innings, pulling back the deficit strongly. Jack O’Loughlin nailed a three-run home run with bat in hand for the Titans. In the final inning, Josh Whelan put a charge in a ball that enabled three more runs to score to bring the margin back to five, but it was too little too late.

Manly vs. Adelaide Armada
The final game on Diamond three saw a see-sawing battle between Manly and the Adelaide Armada, and it was the Armada who came out on top thanks to a four run sixth inning. Will Kortekaas pitched admirably for the Armada, throwing 90 pitches in five innings, while his opposite number Sean Tanno threw 98 pitches. Manly’s Josh Gessner continued his strong tournament, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. The Armada’s Mason Clavell went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and was the standout offensive player.

Cronulla vs. Brisbane South
Brisbane South got on top of Cronulla early, and behind a complete game shutout from Conor Laverty, took the victory 10-0 Laverty struck out six and only gave up two hits in the most impressive pitching performance of the tournament so far. Laverty was backed up by his offence, who made the most of their eight hits. The middle of Brisbane’s lineup did the damage, picking up all nine RBIs.

SF 2: Hills vs. Eastern Phantoms
In the shock of the tournament so far, number six seed Hills knocked off the previously undefeated Eastern Phantoms to take their place in the Championship Game, where they will meet the Southern Mariners. Ayden Dever lead from the front for Hills, throwing one of the most impressive starts in the tournament against a red-hot Phantoms lineup. The top of the Hills batting lineup fired, with leadoff man Kaiden Costa picked up three hits and an RBI, while Jack Dormor continued his exceptional tournament, picking up another two hits. Hayden Lyberopoulos picked up two RBIs and threw a clutch seventh inning to deliver Hills the victory. Jayson Miller did all he could, claiming two hits, and Josh Franklin made the most of his opportunity, driving in two late runs, but it wasn’t enough as Hills held on for a stirring victory.

The Adelaide Titans and Eastern Phantoms will match up in the Bronze Medal game at 10.15, while the Championship game between Hills and Southern Mariners takes place at 2.30pm. Both games are streamed live on www.abltv.com
