Springvale 6 Defeated Doncaster 2 at Springvale.

Both of these teams came to play after four rounds of the season without a win. Springvale have been hitting well to date and infamously played in a game where they scored 21 runs and lost. Meanwhile Doncaster have had Simon Fitzmaurice starting well on the hill and have been hitting in every game but have been unable to score many runs.

That changed straight away though on Saturday afternoon when The Dragons got two in the first innings. Scott Carr led off and was HBP, then Michael Mazzacatto got on with an error, Da’Voine singled for an RBI and Brendan McDonald grounded out for another RBI.

The pitchers on both teams settled in from there and scattered the hits until the middle of the game. For Springvale Glen Richards doubled in the second, Barnden singled in the fourth and Hayle singled in the fifth. Fitzmaurice on the mound for Doncaster took those hits in his stride and managed to leave the scorebook blank and maintain the Dragon’s two run lead until the sixth.

In that innings Scott Wearne led off with a walk, then Chris Maurer crafted a safe bunt down the line to third before Glenn Mascoll, Glen Richards and Matthew Hayle (3 for4) all singled. Barnden had been HBP earlier in the innings and after he scored the Lions were ahead 6-4. Fitzmaurice left the mound with one out and was replaced by Marcel D’Avoine who then continued through the seventh. Ben Utting pitched the eighth for the visitors.

The standouts for Springvale were Freddy Flores who threw nine innings for the win after 13 strikeouts and added a hit of his own. Matthew Hayle was also outstanding with the bat for The Lions with three hits.

 Werribee 6, Ballarat 1

A consistent offense and superb pitching carried the Giants over the visiting Brewers, 6-1. Simon Riches (4-5 with a run) and Oliver Box (3-4 with a run and RBI) paced the winners while Josh Lee and Jonathan Lowe also had multi-hit games for Werribee. For Ballarat, Leigh Ashmore had three hits (including a double) and Hamish Burrows contributed two singles.

Bonbeach 11, Upwey FTG 4

A five run sixth inning and three more tallies in the eighth were more than enough for the host Bluejays to down the Tigers, 11-4. Jon Bannister and John Halse each had three hits for the victors while Ben Donald hit a home run and knocked in three for Bonbeach. Across the field, Upwey was paced by Donavan Hendricks and Nicholas Rice who both had two hits.

Fitzroy 4, Moorabbin 3

The Panthers got off to a fast start, tallying twice in the second and once in the third to take a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth. It was then, however, that the Bulldogs pounced, scoring three times in the fourth and once in the fifth to provide the winning margin. At the dish, Luke McLean led Fitzroy in hits with two and also scored a run. Danny King crossed the plate twice for the Bulldogs. For Moorabbin Ben Laux had two singles and Ryan Phillips two doubles.

Berwick City 4, Port Melbourne 0

Two runs in each the sixth and the seventh were more than enough for the Cougars stellar pitching staff who only yielded two hits in nine innings to the hometown Mariners.

Malvern 13, Williamstown 4

Tallying multiple runs in the first, third, fifth, and sixth innings, the visiting Braves were too much for the Wolves. Geoffrey Holland’s four runs and two additional plate crossings by Chris Godfrey, James Lewis, and Gavin Woolgerb were more than enough for Malvern. For Williamstown, Aaron Green had two hits and Bill Millar tacked on a double in four trips to the plate.

Essendon 9, Doncaster 7

Six runs in the first inning propelled the Bombers to a two run victory against visiting Doncaster. Essendon gave up a run in the first, two in the second, one in the fourth, two in the sixth and one in seventh yet added one each in the second, fifth, and sixth to provide the winning margin.

Malvern 8, Footscray 7

In a back-and-forth affair, the Braves outlasted the Bulldogs, 8-7, at Wadsawoth Field. Malvern started quickly plating three runs in the first. Undaunted, Footscray answered immediately in the top of the second scoring four times. Typical of this wild game, the Braves retook the lead in the second with two runs and led 5-4 after two frames. The Bulldogs then scored single markers in the third and fourth to lead 6-5 entering the bottom of the fifth. It was there when the match irrevocably turned as Malvern scored three times to take an 8-6 advantage. Footscray scraped one more run across in the top of the seventh but on this day it was not enough.

Springvale had a bye this week.

Footscray 10, Research 8

Buoyed by a terrific start (a run in the first, five in the second and one in the third) the Bulldogs mauled the Roadrunners at the start, speeding to a 7-0 advantage after four frames. Research battled back with two runs in both the fifth and the sixth to narrow the gap to three but Footscray answered with three in the seventh to open up a six run advantage. Four runs in the eighth by Research made it a game, but the Bulldogs closed it out with a clean ninth inning.

Pakenham 18, Chelsea 15

On a surprisingly calm day at Chelsea’s home ground, the Dolphins fell to the Pumas of Pakenham 18-15 in an exciting, back-and-forth affair. Tallying twice in the first, Chelsea then surrendered seven runs in the second. In the victory, the Pumas racked up 21 hits.

St Kilda 13, Mulgrave 13

Last week the St Kilda Saints found themselves down 13-5 in the eighth inning and scored four times to halve the lead but couldn’t come through in the ninth against Footscray. On Sunday the Saints faced an identical deficit and came through with four runs in the top of the ninth to pull even with the Rebels. Though Mulgrave then got their leadoff hitter on and advanced him to third with only one out, St Kilda fireballer Brett Elliott struck out the next hitter and then induced a comebacker to end the threat.

Due to failing light the game ended in a draw.

Mulgrave started fast, plating two runs in the first inning. They then added five more runs in the third before St Kilda answered with two of their own in the fourth to make it 7-2 Rebels.

Mulgrave added six more runs in the next three innings but it could have been a whole lot worse had Saints hurler Simon Leicht not escaped bases loaded no out jams in both the seventh and eighth frames.

Down 13-6, St Kilda scored thrice in the eighth before finishing their impressive comeback.

The Saints started with Robby Lewis but after only facing a couple batters he had to leave the mound due to injury. Pete McCourt took over and performed admirably, pitching six innings before Leicht took over in the seventh. Elliott pitched the final frame for St Kilda.

Mulgrave had Stuart Phillips throw the first four innings, Mathew Young innings five through eight, and Nathan Cook pitched the ninth.

In a thrilling contests, the star of the game had to be Saints catcher Pete Smith. Playing his first game since the winter Grand Final, he went 5-6 with a double, triple, and the game-tying RBI single with two outs in the ninth.

Next week, Mulgrave (3-0-1) remains in Dandenong to host Chelsea (1-2) and St Kilda (0-2-1) returns home to Tom O’Halloran Field to take on Research (0-2).

Ormond Glenhuntly was idle this weekend.

After an exciting weekend of Division 1 baseball, Melbourne and Waverley are still undefeated whilst Essendon sits even with Geelong with three wins after losing to the Baycats. Impressive performances from around the comp included: Geelong’s Rudy Jaramillo, Ben Utting of Doncaster, Melbourne’s Matthew Kent, Nick Rossell of Blackburn and George Callil of Cheltenham to name just a few players who have fans salivating at the prospect about what the rest of the season will bring.

Though they hit well, Doncaster and Springvale both are still looking for their first win of the season.

Waverley 6, Blackburn 5

Although they were outhit seven to nine, host Waverley managed to win a game where the elements played a significant role. Wind especially seem to affect both teams who each made critical errors.

Blackburn scored two runs in the first inning on a double by Nick Rossell (3 for 4) and some costly mistakes by the home team. Wildcats pitcher Luke Papananicolaou straightened up in the second inning when he threw three strikeouts to leave the score at 2-0. His team then came out and scored three in the bottom of the frame after singles from Andrew and Mitch Hayes and a walk to Papananicolaou. Jesse Gavin departed the mound for Blackburn during the fourth after Oliver Dunn negotiated a bases on balls. Nicholas Barret then took over, allowing singles to Justin Burke and Matthew Beattie (who knocked in Dunn), making the score 4-2 Waverley.

Blackburn evened the game in the seventh on a David Tierney double and walks by Ryan Berg and Rossell, both runs scoring on errors. In the bottom of the seventh, Jarryd Dale singled for Waverley and after a couple more errors two runs crossed the plate to put the Wildcats up two, 6-4. The Orioles got within one in the ninth after Rossell struck again with a double, but couldn’t ever even the score.

With the win the Wildcats remained unbeaten while the Orioles fell to .500 with a 2-2 mark.

Cheltenham 3, Doncaster 1

The pitchers were in complete control as the spectators had to wait until the fifth inning before a run was scored. Simon Fitzmaurice started for the hometown Dragons and showed impressive control, striking out six Rustlers on the day. The only hit that Cheltenham got before the fifth was when George Callil tripled in the second before being stranded. Callil stepped up again in the fifth and doubled with one out, then Sam Trend-Beacon, Brett Curnow and Dylan Trevorah all followed with singles to plate three runs. Although Callil didn’t get credit with an official run batted in, his at bats were critical to the win in the low-scoring affair.

Doncaster went down although they outhit their opponents, 6-5. The Dragons challenged Rustler’s pitcher Bryan Kloppe early and often, hitting three doubles and a single in the first four innings despite not scoring a run. Manager Ben Utting got three hits, two of them doubles.

After four games, Cheltenham sits at 2-2 while Doncaster has yet to record a victory.

Melbourne 10, Springvale 2

It was a day for the batters out at Surrey Park as the Demons hit safely 14 times and Springvale earned 10 knocks. Three players—Matthew Kent, Robert Hondramatis and Tristan Ford—each recorded two hits for Melbourne whilst Scott Wearne got three hits and Lucas Price added another couple for the losing side.

Springvale jumped on Melbourne immediately in the top of the first when Wearne doubled then Freddy Flores, Glenn Mascoll and Price all singled, putting the Lions up two runs. The Demons were quick to reply, though, stringing together five hits in the second inning with two outs. Adam Burton, Kent, Hondramatis, Nathan Aron and Matthew Blackmore all doubled propelling Melbourne to a 6-2 advantage. After a single run in the sixth, two hit by pitches and an error in the seventh allowed the Demons to score three more runs and provide the final margin of victory.

With the win, Melbourne remain undefeated whilst Springvale are still looking for their first triumph.

Sandringham 3, Newport 1

Despite windy conditions at Jack Guiliano Field in Sandringham, this contest was dominated by the pitchers on both teams. Cameron McNish and Stephen Pengelly threw for Newport, while Sandringham had Spencer Jack and Terry Jeon on the bump. Newport’s only run was scored in the fifth after a single by Dean Anglin with subsequent walks to Zac Siepolt and Heath Black. Scot Malthouse grounded into a double play, allowing Anglin to score.

On singles by Tony Cevec and Ryan Morris in the third, the Royals plated one run. Then a walk and a couple of wild throws by Rams infielders cost Newport dearly.

Sandringham went ahead for good with two outs in the fourth inning when Jordy Barnett singled and came home on sacrifice fly by Jake Wonnacott

Original report supplied by Geoff Francis of Sandringham Baseball Club.

Geelong 5, Essendon 0

The Bombers didn’t perform at their best but you can’t take anything away from the visiting Baycats. Geelong looked great, buoyed by a star performance from Rudy Jaramillo both on the mound and at the bat. For more details on this match see our Match of the Round section.

Preston 13, Sunshine 1

Thanks to two runs in the first, one in the second, eight in the third and one in the fourth, the Pirates dominated the Eagles, 13-1, in Sunshine. Five players for Preston—Leigh Bertrand, Edward Buzachero, Cameron Deeble, Ryan Evans, and Jorday Ley—all had multiple hits and Taisuke Sakaguchi contributed a triple to the Pirates’ cause.
