Two weeks ago the Australian Baseball Alumni Association officially launched. We had the opportunity to chat with one of Australia’s most successful all-round Major League Baseball exports Craig Shipley about what the ABAA is and why it was established.
What is the Australian Baseball Alumni Association?
The Australian Baseball Alumni association idea came from a meeting a number of us had in Taiwan in late 2013 while at the 18U World Championships. The idea came from Kevin Hooker (Detroit Tigers Scout) and is based on the premise that there are lots of people in the baseball community who want to reconnect and ultimately give back to the sport.

The idea came from Kevin Hooker (Detroit Tigers Scout) and is based on the premise that there are lots of people in the baseball community who want to reconnect and ultimately give back to the sport.
Why was ABAA established?
It was established to reconnect anyone and everyone who has an interest in baseball in Australia, and keep them informed about what’s happening in the baseball community.

Who can be a part of the ABAA?
Anyone who has been involved in our great game: players, officials, friends, family and support staff are all welcome.
Anyone who has been involved in our great game: players, officials, friends, family and support staff are all welcome.
Why did you decide to get involved with the ABAA?
The need for us to start giving back in an organised manner is my primary reason for being involved. Everything I have is because of baseball, I have seen the world, as well as made great friends in and out of Australia. Along with many other baseball alumni, including Brett Ward (Baltimore Orioles Scout) and Mark Marino (ex pro player), we are at a stage in our life where we feel this is a place we can have an impact while expecting nothing in return.

How do you think the association can benefit the sport in Australia?
The ABAA can fill a void that has been open for a long time; it gives us the opportunity to reconnect many of my generation and generations before. It also gives us the opportunity to open up many avenues of support that can do nothing but help the sport.

What are the short term/long term goals of the ABAA?
The short-term goal is to spread the word of ABAA's existence and get as many involved as we can. Long term there are multiple avenues that can lead to the group helping across a number of fronts. For example we will shortly launch a mentoring program that will be available to all college players, national team members and professional players. The mentors will be ex pros and others heavily involved at the top level of our sport in Australia. As a young Australian trying to make a career out of the game you face many obstacles, having someone that came from where you did and experienced the difficulties of this game is something I wish was available to me as a player. These mentors will be available to help any player interested with advice as to how to handle whatever struggle they encounter on their trek to success in the game.

In their third game at the 21U IBAF World Cup, Australia had a convincing win over Venezuela. Defeating the South American country 14-1 in a 7-inning knockout.
Venezuela threatened with the first run on the board in the third, but Australia fought back immediately. Adding their own two runs the same inning, a result of aggressive base running and singles from Jacob Younis and Ben Lodge.
While Venezuela remained scoreless for the rest of the game, Australia added two in the 4th, four in the 5th and continued their scoring streak with six runs in the 6th. Guy Edmonds and Jacob Younis were hot with the bat with doubles, and Adam Silva was on fire with two massive triples.
Aaron Thompson did an outstanding job on the mound, pitching the first 6 innings, only giving up 3 hits and awarding him the win. Lachlan Madden came in to close out the game, pitching the 7th and not allowing any hits.
Manager Tony Harris thought the team "played a good game, we were aggressive and saw outstanding pitching from Aaron Thompson. It was his first time wearing the green and gold and he kept the hitters at bay. The team as a whole were aggressive in both the batters box and on the bases.
We are excited to be progressing to the second round and are ready for the challenge. We need to keep up the momentum and play aggressive baseball".

Australia’s performance in the Opening Round Robin has qualified them to move on to the Super Round Robin, and the opportunity to play for Gold. They will enjoy two days of rest before playing their first game of the next round.

Second placed Doncaster on 5 wins and 2 losses travel to Malvern (2-6). The Dragons come into this game as the clear favourites but can the Braves take advantage of the mid-week rotations and steal a win?
Interview with Samantha Hamilton of Doncaster. Direct link here.
Batting for Doncaster, Belinda Cannington. Pitching for Malvern is Jess Johnson
In the top of the 1st Cannington doubled to right then Hamilton singled to left to advance her to 3rd. McCann got on with an error to score the 1st run and Doncaster had 1st and 2nd occupied with none out. Peterson scored the 2nd run on a fielder’s choice to 2 then stole on the next pitch. Josephine Pope took the count to 2-1 before she hit to left with no addition to the score to make it 1st and 3rd occupied. Paris Penny also hit to left and scored the 3rd run of the game. Steane drew a walk after a lengthy at bat to a vacant 1st base. Vanessa Clifford came to the plate with a hit to left to score one, then Maddy Davis did the same to score another two to make it six nil with one out. The top of the order came up again and Cannington hit the ball over the right fielder’s head to score two. McCann drove in one more to make it nine runs to the Dragons. Two routine outs and Malvern went into the dugout. Doncaster leading 9-0.
Bottom 1st and pitching for Doncaster is Erin Collis. Ellen Goodrope lead off with a single to left. Ash DaSilva came to bat and singled to centre. Laura Myles also singled to centre and scored a run to open the account for the Braves. Collis then finished it with a strikeout and left one runner on base. Doncaster leading 9-1.
Top 2 and Paris Penny singled to centre and that bought Steane to the plate. She also singled to left to make it 1st and 3rd occupied with none out for the visiting team. Steane stole but Penny stayed where she was at 3rd. Jess Johnson pitched low for a strikeout, then Penny scored on a sac fly to right by Davis. The tag at the plate on Penny was close but the umpire ruled it safe. Doncaster leading 10-1 with two out. Cannington got her 3d hit of the game with a hit to left to score one more and make it 11-1 when Malvern ended the dig with a routine ground out.
Steane took a good running catch in right for the 1st out in the bottom of the 2nd. Then Cannington backed up the pitcher well to make the 2nd out at 1st base. To finish Collis sent her team back into bat after she caught a comebacker. Doncaster still leading 11-1.
Ash DaSilva took a good fly ball running back in right for the 1st out in the top of the 3rd. Kate Lethborg came into the game at bat and walked to make it 1st and 2nd occupied with one out. DaSilva in to pitch for Johnson, then Penny got HBP to load the bases with Steane at bat. Malvern then rolled a 1-2-3 double play and went in for their turn at bat. No addition to the score.
Bottom 3rd and Lethborg of Doncaster is in to pitch for Collis. Goodrope started with a long hit double that bounced into the fence. Doncaster got the 1st out with an infield pop-up then Kate Baxter singled to right to make it 1st and 3rd occupied with one out. Johnson singled to centre to score Malvern’s 2nd run and make the it 11-2. Cannington kept her composure under pressure and made a double play on the force from 3rd to 1st to send us into the 4th.
Top of the 4th and Malvern pitcher DaSilva started it with a routine ground out at short, then another at 2nd. Ash wasn’t missing by much but Hamilton drew a walk to make it 1st and 2nd occupied for number three hitter Amy McCann who singled to centre to load them up. A groundout to the pitcher and Malvern got out of it leaving three on base and no addition to the score. Doncaster leading 11-2.
Bottom 4 and Andrea Baxter walked on two strikes then Doncaster turned a double play after Stevenson got on with an error. Fielding for Doncaster at 3rd base Cannington showed her class again when she made a groundball out from 3rd to end the innings and take us to the 5th with no addition to the score. Doncaster leading 11-2.
In the top of the 5th Goodrope came in to pitch after DaSilva had held the Dragon’s bats well. To start the innings Paris Penny doubled to left to score Lethborg and make the score 12-2. Then Steane hit a triple to bring Penny in and make it 13-2. Clifford also tripled and scored Steane. Hamilton came to bat and walked after Cannington hit again with another triple to score a run. Then McCann doubled to score Cannington and make it two on with one out. Doncaster leading 15-2. Lethborg grounded out at 1 to score Hamilton and make the score 16-2. Penny got her 2nd hit of the dig with a single to left to score another two, 18-2. Steane then singled to left and made it 19-2. Malvern finished it off with a fly out. The Braves need seven runs in this innings to avoid the five innings mercy rule being applied.
Bottom 5, Goodrope and DaSilva walked to start it for Kate Baxter who lined out to 3rd base, Cannington then doubled off at 2nd to make it two out. Johnson walked to make it 1st and 2nd occupied then Doncaster ended it with a force out at 2nd.
Some impressive hitting by the Dragons team winning the game 19-2. 3 hits apiece to Cannington, McCann, Steane and Penny.

Mid-Week Rap November 11th 2014.
Division 1 this week sees a full round of mid-week matches starting with four games on Tuesday the 11th of November. Upwey travel to Sandringham for a 6pm game after the Tigers have suffered five losses in a row. Meanwhile Sandringham will be bolstered by their first win of the season after they got over Melbourne on Sunday. In the win the Royals collected 12 hits (with four different players getting safely on base multiple times) against the Demons five different pitchers.
In the replay of last year’s grand final at MBP Blackburn is the away team to Essendon tonight at 6.30pm. In the Orioles ten run win over Preston on Sunday they collected eleven hits, Ryan Phillips got three and David Dicker continued his form in the box with two. However the standout performance for the Orioles was from Adam Bright who pitched seven innings to enforce the mercy rule, giving up one run and six hits. The Blackburn pitchers will come up against the experienced Bomber’s offence that collected eleven hits on Sunday versus Cheltenham. Essendon were lead by Tristan McDonald with three safe hits as well as Dean McIntyre and Doyle Dertell who got two each.
The Pirates will be looking to recover from their defeat as they host Doncaster at La Trobe for tonight’s 7 O’clock game. The Pirates will take something from the fact that in the game against Blackburn they played six innings of one run baseball but will be haunted by the fact that they gave up ten runs in the 4th. Meanwhile Doncaster come off three wins in a row and will take confidence into the game as their starter Luke Westphal is in great form and manager Ben Utting looks to continue his hitting streak. Westphal has a had a fair load of pitching in the last two weeks so look for one of the Doncaster’s younger pitchers to take the mound, maybe Callum Lethborg or Marcel d’Voine.
Williamstown host Waverley at MBP for the 8.50pm game tonight as both teams are looking to get back on the winner’s list. Williamstown will be looking to score some runs after three low scoring losses. Waverley will be looking to get their second win after some close losses in the last few weeks.
Melbourne head to MBP on Wednesday night 12th November as the away team to Newport for the 6.30pm game. The Demons will be confident after a solid performance from their middle order on Sunday although they suffered a loss to Sandringham. The Demons matched the Royals with twelve hits as Matthew Kent picked up four singles and Scott Moore scored four RBIs on two hits. Meanwhile the Rams will be looking to run on with their recent form as they come off five victories in a row. Their young starter Griffin Weir has been pitching well going seven plus innings again on Sunday against Waverley. Liam Vicory-Lovegrove got two hits batting at number two with five other players getting a single hit each for a team total of seven. We may see Jeremy Young start on the hill for the Rams tomorrow or perhaps the ball may go to Eric Klein.
Geelong host Cheltenham at MBP at 8.50pm Wednesday night as the Baycats look to build on their third win and go above 500. Cheltenham will be looking to improve their batting as they managed only four hits against Essendon on Sunday although Rutgers will again be hard to stop as he collected two for the Rustlers in the loss. Barrett and Kloppe shared the pitching for Cheltenham on the weekend so that leaves them with a few fresh arms to chose from tomorrow night.
In Division 2 on Thursday night Bonbeach St.Chads travel to MBP to face up to the 2nd placed Werribee team for the 6.30pm game. The Blue Jays are coming off a mercy rule loss to Sunshine who is just on top of the ladder ahead of the Giants.
The other Thursday night game sees 2nd placed Moorabbin travel to MBP as the away team to Fitzroy at 8.50pm after the Panthers had a walk off win on Sunday versus a resurgent St.Kilda. The Panthers outhit the Saints thirteen to eight after Mulherin and Musson pitched well on the home hill. The Panthers had four players get two hits each and Rick Wheeler got his one hit as the walk-off single. Fitzroy come off the back of a mid-week victory against Port Melbourne last Wednesday and another big win against Springvale on the weekend as their star hitter Alex Turlea has hit two home runs in two games. Lefty starter Jack Freeth has also been hitting his spots for the Lions but expect to see one of their younger pitchers take the mound on Thursday night.
The other remaining mid-week game is the match of the round. Tonight in Women’s Division 1, Doncaster travel to Malvern at 6pm. Check the Summer League website and Twitter for the live link.
See you around the grounds.
