Australia just missed out on a second win at the 21U Baseball World Cup, losing to Nicaragua 3-2.
Australia struggled against Nicaragua’s starting pitcher, not finding their stride until the 5th inning when a double from Robbie Perkins and a RBI single from Ryan Dale put Australia on the board. The run tied the score up after Nicaragua had put a run on in the 3rd.
Nicaragua quickly responded to Australia’s run with an additional two of their own. Australia attempted a comeback in the 8th, and were close to taking the lead and win in the 9th but were unable to capitalize on the opportunities presented to them and lost the game.
Starting pitcher Lachlan Wells and Sam Holland pitched a strong game, only giving up 7 hits combined. Perkins was hot with the bat with a single and a double, Dale with two singles and a massive triple from Zach Shepherd.
It is important for Australia to win their next game in order to finish in the top three in their group, advancing them to the super round robin. Australia requires a high finish in the tournament to increase their world ranking and be eligible to participate in the ‘Premier 12’ tournament.

Keeping the game scoreless until the 5th, Australia pulled ahead of the Netherlands and won their first game of the 21U IBAF World Cup 10-1.
Scoring five runs in the 5th inning, a result of aggressive base running, singles to Aaron Sayers and Jacob Younis and a triple from Zach Shepherd, gave Australia the advantage they needed. With the Netherlands only putting one run on the board, Australia continued to up their score count with three in the 8th and two in the 9th scoring ten runs from eleven hits.
Manager Tony Harris was happy with the result, "We started slow, but after scoring five run in the 5th we got the bats going and were able to get into their bullpen. The team gave a solid workman like performance, which gave a good result; we pitched well and ran the bases aggressively. We need to continue that mentality into tomorrow’s game.
The atmosphere with the team is good, even after a loss yesterday the guys have come together as a ball club. The older guys are setting a good example for the younger players and there is a good balance amongst the group".

Top of the 7th, Josh Simpson took the hill for the Blue Jays and Irons lead off for Sunshine with a hit up the middle. Wilke holed out to centre and Galloway got on after a muffed fly in left field. Another routine out and Bonbeach back in to bat to see if they could get 4 runs to avoid a mercy rule decision against them after 7 innings.
Bottom 7th and Halse got on after he beat the ball to 1st base from short. However it was too little too late and Sunshine got the outs to finish the game 13-0.
Meddick pitched very well for Sunshine with 6 shut-out innings, 73 pitches, 50 strikes, 23 balls and 6 Ks. Sunshine 14 hits, 2 each for Brasher, Irons, Koski, Chatwood, Galloway. One each for Davis, Wilke and Hornstra.

Australia played their first game of the 21U IBAF World Cup today, and despite succumbing to a powerful Japanese team 9-7 they can hold their heads high.
Even though Japan jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the top of the first, Australia fought back and staged a great comeback. Once starting pitcher Aaron Sookee settled down, and with some sparkling infield defense, Australia almost secured the victory against world ranked number 2 Japan.
A triple from Guy Edmonds and an RBI from Robbie Perkins put Australia on the board in the 2nd. Australia loaded the bases in the 4th with singles from Jacob Younis, Ben Lodge and Guy Edmonds. Japanese pitcher Masura Nakamura then lost a fastball inside hitting Connor MacDonald, which scored the second run for Australia and started a five run inning.
Ryan Dale kept the inning alive by singling to right field off a 97km curve ball to score Lodge and Edmonds, with MacDonald crossing the plate on a wild pitch to knot the score. The lead was secured off a ground rule double from Ben Leslie, and after a final strikeout the inning ended with a 6-5 lead for Australia.
The 5th saw Australia extend their lead with a run to push ahead 7-5. With two outs Shepherd singled to centerfield, Edmonds walked and with runners at 1st and 2nd, a single from Perkins scored Shepherd on a close play at the plate.
With one out Japan added a run in the 6th off a triple from Seiya Suzukis, followed by a ground ball out to bring the score to 7-6. Aaron Sayers made a nice play up the middle to end the inning on a force at 2nd.
Japanese left hander Yuma Yokoyama came in to pitch breezing through the 6th, 7th and 8th striking out 8 while dominating the Australian hitters with a 4-pitch mix. Sam Holland came in to pitch the 7th for Australia and retired the side 123. Sam Street followed Holland in the 8th, retiring the lead off hitter on a ground ball before a single put a runner at 1st with one out. Street quickly induced a ground ball double play, slickly turned from Younis to Sayers and on to MacDonald to end the inning.
Closer Todd Van Steensel pitched in the 9th, eventually giving up 3 runs after retiring the first batter on a weak ground ball to 2nd. Walks put runners at 1st and 2nd, and a double over Leslie's head in right field saw the tying run cross the plate. A single to right drove in the go ahead run and a single to left made the score 9-7 Japan at the end of the frame.
Japan's Ryosuke Nomura closed the door to give Japan a come from behind 9-7 win over a young Australian team that fought their way back into the game despite striking out 17 Times. Australia was able to plate 7 runs with some timely hitting fighting back from a 5-0 deficit to lead going into the 9th.
Australia will play their second game tomorrow against the Netherlands at 1:00pm (3:00pm AEST) at Dou-Liou Stadium.

Baseball Victoria is pleased to announce the trials for the charters that will participate in the Junior League State Championships.
This year we will be the inaugural Junior League Championships, with the winner going through to participate at the Junior League National Championships in April 2015.
The Junior League program has replaced the U14 National Championships, with charters now participating in a State Championship with the winner going through to participate at National Championship as they have for the last seven (7) years within the Little League Age group.

The 21U team has arrived safely in Taichung, Chinese Taipei in preparation for the 2014 21U IBAF World Cup held from 7 November to 16 November.
The first-ever 21U Baseball World Cup will feature eleven national teams in a forty-three game tournament. The teams have been split into two groups, who will play each other in their respective groups round robin style. The top three teams from each group will then advance to the super round robin, and the top two teams from this round will then play for gold.
Manager Tony Harris recently told the Australian Baseball Alumni that “we know we have to finish in the top three after the Round Robin to reach the second round of cross-over games. We’ll be trying to win every game, starting with Japan first-up. We know that they are always strong defensively and are always a tough opponent with a team of high-quality professionals. Beating Japan would be huge, and it is definitely achievable.”
Their first game will take place on Friday 7 November at 12:30pm (Friday 7 November at 2:30pm AEST) versus world ranked number two (2) Japan.

Division 1 and 2 Preview for the Week 5th November.
Top of the table clashes will test bullpens.
This week in Division 1 the midweek games kick off with teams playing the 2nd leg of matches from the weekend. All games are at alternate venues except for Waverley who return to Melbourne and Sandringham who take on Geelong at MBP at 8.50pm.
In the mid-week match of the day Cheltenham takes on Blackburn, tonight 6pm at Blackburn after the Rustlers won in 11 on Sunday. Dylan Trevorah of Cheltenham singled to centre in the bottom of the last frame and Paul Rutgers did the same for his 3rd hit of the game and the walk off. Blackburn will be looking for ways to contain Rutgers after the number 2 hitter has had weeks of multiple hit games. The Orioles will also be looking for more ways to score as they were outhit 13-7 at the farm. Kane Davidson also got three hits batting at 8 for Cheltenham so he might be higher in the batting order tonight. Blake Cunningham only threw 49 pitches for the winners so he may pitch again in the two-hour game at Blackburn.
Upwey travel to Doncaster for their return bout after the Tigers were held to one run by Dragons ace Luke Westphal and long relief pitcher Andrew Reeves. It wasn’t the most economical of outings for the lefty Westphal though, as he threw 110 pitches in five innings. Reeves threw four innings of relief for Doncaster so maybe the Dragons will start one of their young pitchers in d’Voine or perhaps Findlay will come out of the dish for tonight’s timed game. Upwey will need to come up with ways to contain a reinvigorated Doncaster offence as Ben Utting got three hits with the same number of RBIs on Sunday batting in the three hole and he was well supported by Nicolas Unland who chipped in with two hits, from the lead off position. Upwey will also be looking to bust out of the box as they were outhit eight to three in the loss. Luke Howell pitched eight innings going deep into a game again and saving the bullpen arms for tonight. The Tigers might look to their reliable starter Nick Rice to take the hill at Deep Creek at 6pm. Go to this link to see the match report written by Lachlan Craven of Doncaster.
Waverley travel to Melbourne for their return leg of the tight contest which they lost 3-2 on Sunday. Waverley shared the pitching in that game between Papanicolau (3.2 innings), Darcy (2.1) and Matthew Wilson (2.0) so any one of those may take the mound tonight at Surrey Park. Although they amassed ten hits to outhit the Demons who got eight, Waverley suffered the loss. Hayes batting two got a couple of hits as did Edwards batting clean up for the Wildcats. Tommy Maxfield followed them batting five with a triple and an RBI. Form like that in the middle order gives Waverley a good chance to get their second win of the season tonight. Meanwhile, Melbourne has also had results from their middle order with Kent batting three, Ayres in the clean-up spot and Scott Moore batting six all getting a hit each. The Demon's Liam Davine pitched 7.1 innings on Sunday for nine hits and seven strikeouts before handing the ball to regular closer Blackmore. The Demons have a few pitching options in reserve but are likely go to the reliable Ratcliffe tonight.
Newport who won 3-4 were outhit six to three by Williamstown on Sunday in last weekend’s match of the round. Go to this link to see all the information on their ten innings game.
Preston travel to Essendon after the Pirates ran out winners at La Trobe in the top of the table 13 innings game on Sunday. The undefeated Preston have been going from strength to strength using their various pitchers. The Pirates have Travis Bass, Godbould and Andrew Smiley (who threw a no-hitter against Williamstown) who are all able to start or close games. These same guys bat right through their middle order so will be looking to give more run support to their own pitching. Meanwhile Essendon can take a lot of confidence after a good start from Formisano, but are heading into a very busy November as the mid-week games kick in. The Dons will also be looking for more from their middle order as they only scored one run in the pitcher’s duel on Sunday.
Geelong travel to Melbourne Ball Park for the 8.50pm game against Sandringham after the Baycats won 14-2 on Sunday.
In Division 2 Malvern travel to Bonbeach tonight for the 6pm start after the Braves beat the Blue Jays 6-0 in the first leg.
Port Melbourne are the away team to Fitzroy although the game will be played at Port Melbourne’s ground tonight at the same time. Fitzroy will be looking to do something with their bats after the Mariners ace Cedric Desmedt threw a tight zone in the first leg of the two games when the Mariners won 6-1.
St.Kilda travels to MBP to meet Berwick for a 6.30pm start after the Cougar’s JJ O’Connor lead his team to an 8-1 victory on Saturday at the lakeside ground. The score didn’t really reflect most of the game though, as St.Kilda were in it for most of the day. It was only in the late innings that Berwick ran away with the contest on the back of an O’Connor three run bomb. That changed the whole tone of the game as Jake Tuck had previously pitched well for the Saints.
Werribee travel to MBP to meet Springvale at 6.30pm tomorrow night after the Giant’s Tayler Rowe threw a complete game for 5 hits and 15 strikeouts when they won the Sunday frame 3-2. Werribee also outhit Springvale seven to five so the Lions will be looking to improve a bit on their batting. The Springvale hits all came from the middle order with Wearne and Poole getting one each whilst Mascol got two in the low scoring affair. Evan McPherson got three hits for Werribee and the ever-reliable John Curnow chipped in with two RBIs to trouble the Springvale pitching.
Lion’s starter Stenhouse went two innings on Sunday before he passed the ball Brown who threw seven innings allowing only four hits and striking out seven. Stenhouse wasn’t economical throwing four walks in his two innings but could his lack of work mean that he gets a go on the mound tomorrow? Werribee have a few pitchers in reserve after Rowe’s complete game so they might go to Wes DeJohn. The Giants have been pitching very accurately to work opposition teams out of games, but can their pitchers get them over the line against Springvale who are looking to tie with them on the ladder?
The late Thursday game at MBP (8.50pm) sees two top teams in Sunshine and Moorabbin going at it. Josh Mulherin threw 8 shut out innings and batted in the only run of the day into the wind during the top of the 9th on Sunday. This is shaping up as a very good season for the Panthers starter. Will Musson might take the hill for the Panthers tomorrow but his three hits against the Eagles could make him more valuable in the batting line-up. O’Shea and Wheeler also got two hits apiece for Moorabbin so the Eagles will be looking for ways to shut those two down. The Eagles were stiff to lose a tight game so late as Rory Meddick threw 5 shutout innings before he passed the ball to Adam Irons. Lane Koski presents the most danger against Moorabbin as he collected multiple hits in the lead off spot for Sunshine.
There are no mid-week games in the Women’s Division 1 this week. Saturday sees third place Doncaster travel to Werribee, Springvale take on Essendon in a top of the table clash and Malvern go to Footscray in what on paper looks to be an interesting contest.

Last Friday, the official Australian Baseball Alumni Association (ABA) launched, opening its doors as a community for anyone and everyone that has enjoyed being a part of baseball in Australia.
Alumni membership is open to everyone – current or former players, coaches, umpires, scorers, administrators, sponsors and supporters. The ABA has been created to reconnect with as many from our sport, both past and present, as possible. It is fully supported by Baseball Australia and the Australian Baseball League and the Alumni community will also work towards helping to grow the game for today and the future.
Speaking of the Alumni, inaugural Chairman Brett Ward, said the formal creation of this community has been a long time in the making.
“I am pleased to say that (the Alumni) enjoys the wholehearted backing of many key figures in the sport, and receives great support from Baseball Australia and the Australian Baseball League”.
Australian Baseball Alumni is sponsored by Jet Couriers and Fielders Choice, both generous, long-standing and revered contributors to the sport in this country.
The ABA believes it will deliver a renewed impetus as the baseball community celebrate their achievements, spread the sporting gospel and seek to build with their partners upon the unique character and the great strengths of Australian baseball.
“We recognise the fine work done for baseball by the National Body, the State Associations, the Winter Leagues and the Australian Baseball League,” Ward said.
“We are certainly not going into competition with anyone,” he said, “our goal is to provide another layer of service by more closely engaging baseball people at all levels in the sport.”
The Australian Baseball Alumni is an established and fully accountable non-for-profit organisation that will each year direct any surplus funds generated to junior teams or to other worthwhile community baseball projects as recommended by the membership base.
