In a must win game to advance to the gold medal play off, the Emeralds lost to the USA 3-1.

In their first game of the semi-final round at the 2014 Women’s World Cup, the Emeralds needed to win in order to progress. They will now play for the Bronze medal on Sunday.

The Emeralds battled with the USA for most of the game, but were unable to deliver when they needed to - with bat or ball.

Although the Emeralds were the first to get on the board in the top of the 4th, USA responded with two runs at the end of the fourth and another in the 6th to end the game with a scoreline of 3-1.

It's time for the team to regroup and prepare for the next challenge, which is two games against Canada and the chance to redeem themselves.

Manager Simone Wearne explained how "It is a really disappointing result for us. We have worked hard, and we came here for the chance to play off for gold. But the fact is that we make our own destiny, so we need to really focus over the next two days and come out swinging the bats against Canada".

The Emeralds will play Canada today at 1:30 pm (2:30pm AEST) at Sun Marine Stadium and again tomorrow for the Bronze medal.

The Emeralds ended round 1 of the Womens World Cup with a convincing win against Hong Kong, advancing them to the semi-final round.

The girls came out swinging and by the end of the 1st inning they were up 17-0, they went on to score another 12 runs over 4 complete innings to defeat Hong Kong 29-1.

With 18 hits, Tahnee Lovering led the way with 4 hits and 6 RBI's, followed by Shae Lillywhite and Natalie Rawlings with 3 hits each. Laura Neads and Amy McCann each had two hits, and Kim McMillan, Katie Gaynor, Christina Kreppold and Rachael Higgins each had a hit.

Taylah Welch got the win throwing 4 innings, striking out 6 and conceding no earned runs, while Maddi Lenard and Amy Collins were both good in relief

The Emeralds finished second in their pool after winning 2 of their 3 games, advancing them to the semi-final round and ensuring a top four finish at the World Cup.

The top two teams from group A (Japan, Emeralds) will face off against the top two teams from group B (USA, Canada), with round one head-to-heads carrying over into the second round. If Japan and USA win their games today they will secure a spot in the gold medal game, while the Emeralds and Canada must avoid losing a game.

Manager Simone Wearne believes the girls are prepared for their game with the USA today, "after 2 days of rain delays and missing the day off, the girls did a great job to get out and play the way they did against Hong Kong. We know the next round will be tough, but we're excited for the challenge that awaits with Team USA"

The Emeralds will play Team USA today at 1:30 pm (2:30pm AEST) at Sun Marine Stadium in a must win game for a chance at the Gold Medal.

The Emeralds won their first game of the 2014 ENEOS presents VI IBAF Women’s Baseball World Cup against Venezuela yesterday with a score of 4-3.

The innings were slow and steady throughout the entire game, with the first inning remaining scoreless for both teams. Venezuela was first to put a run on the board in the second, the Emeralds reciprocated the run in the bottom of the inning with Leigh Godfrey scoring off a sacrifice fly from Taylah Welch.

By the top of the 5th the Emeralds had a two run lead, however Venezuela fought back to tie up the game. The Emeralds were determined to record a win this time, and an RBI from Katie Gaynor scored Bronwyn Gell giving the Emeralds a one run lead. The game ended in the 7th with a 4-3 score to the Emeralds.

Stephanie Gaynor threw a good game, going 5 innings for no earned runs with Jacinda Barclay relieving to close out the game with two scoreless relief innings. On the field Bronwyn Gell took a great catch at shortstop, Shae Lillywhite with a great catch at second base and Christina Kreppold was controlling at third base with some standout plays as well. Tahnee Lovering also had another great game behind the dish. With the bats, it was a hard night for hitting with 10 walks, however Bronwyn Gell, Christina Kreppold, Katie Gaynor, Leigh Godfrey and Tahnee Lovering all had hits.

Manager Simone Wearne said "the team was keen to get out on the field for day two and make amends after a disappointing performance in their first game against Japan. We are continuing to improve each game and although this still wasn't our best game we got the W and are looking forward to finishing round 1 on a good note".

The Emerald’s will play their final game of round 1 today at 4:30pm (5:30pm AEST) versus Hong Kong, who are yet to win a game at the World Cup. The top two teams from each pool will advance to the second round, with the standings from round two determining who plays in the gold medal game.

Following the opening ceremony, the Emeralds played Japan in front of a crowd of 8,500 at Sun Marine Stadium. The Emeralds fell to Japan 14-0, allowing Japan to continue their 7 game winning streak. Christina Kreppold did threaten in the first with a massive hit to right field just short of the fence, but the Emeralds were unable to capitalize on the hit.
