Baseball Victoria received correspondence from Vicsport this afternoon asking that all sports show their support for those directly affected by the tragic events in Tyabb yesterday. Please read the following release and if you can, please wear a black arm band this weekend.

VICTORIAN SPORTS COMMUNITY STANDS AGAINST DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
The Victorian sporting community is devastated by the tragic events at the Tyabb Cricket Club on Wednesday evening which resulted in the loss of 11 year old Luke Batty and his father.
Vicsport has been contacted by numerous people from within the sports community shocked by the tragedy who want to show their support of Luke’s family and friends, and to the members and families associated with the Tyabb Cricket Club.
Following on from tributes by the Australian Cricket Team last night in South Africa and the Victorian Bushrangers who will wear black arm bands in Sydney today, Vicsport (supported by Cricket Victoria), calls on Victorian sporting participants and teams* to show their support by wearing black arm bands over this weekend’s schedule of matches and events.
Vicsport CEO Mark McAllion said “The black arm bands will not only signify support for those directly affected by the dreadful incident in Tyabb, but will also show the sporting community’s recognition and support of efforts to address domestic violence and related mental health problems in the community.”
Those experiencing issues related to domestic violence and mental health are strongly encouraged to contact Lifeline on 13 11 14.
For further information, please contact Mark McAllion on 0432 426 477 or markm@vicsport.asn.au
*Individual clubs/organisations should make case-by-case decisions as to whether this request extends to junior teams and participants, particularly those under 16 year old. Appropriate age levels should be taken into account with any decision to participate by wearing black arm bands.
Vicsport is the peak body representing Victoria’s sport and active recreation sector. Vicsport directly represents the needs and concerns of over 170 member organisations who in turn represent the 16,000+ clubs and associations and in excess of 1.8 million Victorian participants and volunteers in the sport and active recreation community. Vicsport’s essential purpose is to advance Victorian sport and active recreation, by building the capacity and capability of members and stakeholders to encourage and enable greater participation.

Monash University Baseball Club (MUBC) has a strong presence across Victorian Baseball, fielding 6 seniors teams (including a women’s’ team) across the MWBL and DBA in winter, and 2 teams in the BV Summer League. The club recently celebrated its 50th anniversary and continues to foster an inclusive culture for all, and prides itself on introducing baseball to rookies that may never have played before.
Following a 2013 season review, MUBC is restructuring its coaching panel for winter season 2014, and is opening all positions to internal and external expressions of interest. The coaching panel will work towards the following club objectives:
- Ensure players continue to develop their baseball fundamentals and understanding of the game
- Play a hard but fair brand of baseball, in the spirit of the MUBC culture
- Solidify the club’s presence in MWBL B Grade, with long term plans of entering A Grade
- Continue to foster the inclusive culture at MUBC both on and off the field
The new panel will consist of a head coach and a number of specialist coaches (3-4).
The head coach will report to the MUBC board, and have the following responsibilities:
The specialist coaches, with direction from the head coach, will focus on areas such as (but not limited to) hitting, defence, pitching, conditioning and player development depending on the coaches’ specialities. Specialist coaches are expected to hold a minimum ABF Coaching Accreditation Level 3, or be working towards one.
All roles may be playing or non-playing, and may be adjusted to suit the successful candidates and the club. The club is passionate about supporting its coaching panel and players through further development and accreditation.

UPDATE: READ ABOUT TEAL DAY - CLICK HERE
The colour teal represents the ovarian cancer foundation, and the month of February is dedicated to that. In order to raise awareness of the illness and to continually honour Gabby, the club is hosting its annual Teal Game
The Teal Game: 16 February at Farm Rd
The game will be played on the last home game of every Under 18 summer season (as long as it falls in the month of February)
The players will be given special “Teal” Rustlers tops, which have be donated by club members to wear every year on this day.
There will be a medal handed out to the best Cheltenham player as deemed by the two scorers on the day, in memory of Gabby. There will also be a perpetual trophy to go along with this.
This year the game will be played on the 16th of February against Geelong; the last home game for the U18s – we would love a huge crowd to come down to the game and support this initiative
We invite anyone that knew Gabby to come down and celebrate her life and if you didn't know Gabby, come down anyway and support a very worthy cause. There will also be a raffle and BBQ with all money going to ovarian cancer Australia.
