There are just a few weeks left in the VSBL season and we hope everyone has a great finish to summer baseball. We’re looking forward to finals as Victoria returns to COVIDSafe summer restrictions, with Premier Daniel Andrews announcing further easing of restrictions today.

From 11:59pm tonight, Victoria will return to previous COVIDSafe settings, with masks only required on public transport and in aged care facilities, rideshare vehicles and large retail settings including indoor shopping centres, supermarkets and department stores.

While masks will no longer be mandated in most circumstances, the Victorian Government continues to recommend face masks for indoors and outdoors when distancing can’t be maintained.

Click HERE to read the Premier’s full statement.

As a reminder, all VSBL clubs and members must adhere to the COVIDSafe policies outlined in our Return to Play Plan. This includes proper hand sanitizing, cleaning, recordkeeping, and capacity limits, which allow us to keep our baseball community safe and do our part to support Victoria’s COVID normal. Please check your club hand sanitizer stocks and ensure all guidelines are being followed appropriately.

All of these details are outlined in our Return to Play documents available HERE. For more information, please view our frequently asked questions HERE.

Baseball Australia has locked in its inaugural National Junior Squad, with 17 Victorian athletes making the cut after strong performances at the 2021 National Showcase Series.

View the full roster HERE.

The squad is set to take part in a camp at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra from April 3-11 as part of Boral Team Australia’s preparations for the 2021 WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup in Florida.

Players were chosen following an in-depth review of information collected at the National Showcase Series events around the country earlier this year.

Baseball Australia national player development manager Andrew Riddell said the expanded junior squad and camp would be a key step in the development of the chosen athletes.

“We are impressed with the talent that was showcased in January and can’t wait to get them into the AIS in a camp environment and see how they measure up against each other,” Riddell said.

The Bluejays were busy on the base paths as they won their third game of the season in high-flying fashion.

Both sides scored one in the first, but Bonbeach started to pull away with five in the second. The Cougars got one run in both the third and fourth as well as a final two in the fifth, but it wasn't enough as Bonbeach kept scoring, with seven in the third and four in the fourth.

The fourth place Bluejays have a 3-4 record with 76 runs for and 67 runs against, while the fifth place Cougars are 2-3-2 with 72 runs for and 78 against.

Cheltenham Rustlers 1 v Moorabbin Panthers 15

The Panthers kept up their fast pace with another double-digit win on their way to an 8-0 record.

Five wins in both the first and the second got things started, and Moorabbin kept the runs coming with four in the third and a final run in the fourth. Cheltenham's lone run came in the third.

The Panthers have scored 128 runs while giving up just 41. Their next game is at home v Berwick while Cheltenham goes into the bye with a 2-4-1 record on 63 runs for and 87 against.

Sandringham Royals 5 v Wheelers Hill Warriors 10

The Royals and the Warriors both put some offence together but ultimately it was the Warriors game with early runs making the difference.

Sandringham went scoreless in the first three innings before scoring two in the fourth and three in the fifth. Meanwhile Wheelers Hill scored five in the first, one in the second, three in the third and one in the fourth.

This marked Wheelers Hill's sixth win, as the team sits second at 6-1 with 98 runs for and 54 runs against. Sandringham is third at 5-2 with 76 runs for and 50 against.

Wheelers Hill hosts Bonbeach and Sandringham plays Pakenham Black at home next.

Pakenham White scored seven more in both the second and the third, while Pakenham Black put up four in the second and seven in the third, falling just short in the big run rally.

Both teams are 1-6 going into the next round. Pakenham White plays Springvale fresh off the bye as Pakenham Black head to Sandringham.

Women's Division 3 West

Newport Rams 14 v Fitzroy Lions 15

The Rams and the Lions fought hard with big at-bats, but ultimately the Lions broke the tie in the bottom of the fourth to take out their fourth win.

Newport had a 4-3 lead after the first, but by the end of the second it was a 7-4 Fitzroy advantage. Newport added three in the third but gave up seven to Fitzroy, so the Rams had to work overtime to put up seven in the fourth. Fitzroy just needed one run and they got it in the bottom frame to seal the deal.

4-4 Fitzroy sits fourth on the ladder with 94 runs for and 90 against, while Newport is 2-6. Fitzroy hosts Melbourne and Newport hosts North Western next.

Doncaster Dragons 0 v Melbourne Demons 10

The Demons improved to a 7-1 record after this strong shutout victory.

The team has scored 116 runs and allowed just 39 so far, with the next game at Fitzroy. Doncaster hosts Geelong in hopes of strengthening a 6-2 record with 94 runs for and 60 against.

North Western Titans 17 v Geelong Baycats 3

The Titans scored seven early runs and followed up with a three-run second and seven additional runs in the third. Geelong kept them from scoring again in the fourth while the Baycats added to their one run in the second with a pair in the final frame.

Ella Wilson, Hannah Lindsey and Bri Telord pitched for Geelong as the team collected two hits. The Baycats visit Doncaster next while third-place North Western heads to Newport in search of win number six.

Social media platform Facebook has made changes in Australia today, removing the ability to read and share news content for all Australian users and publishers.

These changes appear to have affected numerous sporting organisation and club Facebook pages that share information. For example, the Baseball Victoria and Victorian Summer Baseball League pages are still visible, but you can no longer see anytime we have posted a link to a news article or page on our website. Photos, videos, text-only posts, and some shared posts remain visible.

If you are experiencing problems with your club Facebook page, or you have lost all access or posts, please advise us by emailing rachael.bouley@baseballvictoria.com.au.  We have reached out directly to the pages we see are impacted and unable to post at all.

We are actively working with other states and territories to ensure all baseball clubs have the ability to share information.

In the meantime, Baseball Victoria will share images with a link to our website in the text caption and suggest clubs can try the same.

We also recommend several alternative platforms for member communication in addition to club websites such as email, TeamApp, Instagram, Twitter, and MailChimp, as well as using your contact lists available via SportsTG. If you need any assistance running reports or communicating via these platforms, please reach out.

Following announcements made by Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews this morning, Wednesday 17 February 2021, Baseball Victoria is pleased to confirm that all baseball activity across the state will resume tomorrow, Thursday 18 February as the Victorian lockdown expires at 11:59 pm tonight.

The same density limits we had previously apply to community sport, subject to further clarification from the Victorian Government in the next 24 hours. Games and training sessions scheduled for Thursday will proceed as planned when Victoria returns to COVIDSafe summer restrictions, with some revised conditions.

The revised conditions include:

  • The four reasons to leave home and the 5km travel radius will be scrapped.
  • Face mask requirements remain in indoor public spaces and outdoors when you cannot maintain 1.5m social distancing. For all baseball activity in Victoria, face masks must be worn at all times when inside club facilities, including clubrooms, changerooms, canteens, and scorer’s boxes. When social distancing cannot be maintained in the dugout or on the field, players and coaches must wear a mask. All baseball participants must carry a mask with them when they leave the house.

According to the Premier, restrictions will be reviewed Friday, February 26. Click HERE to view the full statement from the Premier.

“We are excited to get back out on the field after a successful circuit breaker,” Baseball Victoria CEO Kristie Middleton said. “The health and safety of our entire community remains our top priority, and we will closely consult with Sport and Recreation Victoria for any further updates regarding community sport and competition. We look forward to the rest of the summer season.”

Any further updates over the course of today and tomorrow will be communicated accordingly.
