Starting Line Up for Sunshine- Hornstra 6, Davis 7, Chatwood 1, Weldon 2, Koski 8, Irons 5, Wilke 9, Jones 4, Byrne 3
Springvale- Sinclair 6, Poole 5, Price 2, Barnden 3, Baillie 4, Kirby 8, DiGiovambattista 7, Manzie-Novotney K 9, Croft 1.
Top 1st innings- Chatwood legged out a sliding triple with two down but Croft threw straight and left him there.
Bottom 1st- Three contact outs saw Springvale back in the dugout with the score 0-0.
Top 2nd - Koski of Sunshine started with a lead-off walk but got caught stealing 2nd after a very accurate throw from Price in the dish for the Lions. Croft threw a good breaking ball to get Irons to pop up to centre for the second out. Wilke walked then made it to 3rd on an error that got Jones to 2nd. Byrne looked eager to hit from the first pitch but Croft absorbed the pressure and left the two runners on after a pop-up for the third out.
Bottom 2nd- Barnden lead off with a line drive single to right then Baillie walked and both runners advanced on a pass ball after a failed bunt attempt. Chatwood steadied on the hill for the Eagles with a strikeout and was peppering low on the outside corner of the plate when he got another swinging. The pressure was then on Springvale to try and score the runners. There was a delay whilst officials discussed the legality of substituting Manzie-Novotoney for Richardson and Chatwood finished it with a strikeout.
Top 3rd- Croft of Springvale continued to impress mixing off-speed and fastballs accurately. Chatwood doubled with two out for his second hit of the day, then showed some heads up running to take 3rd. Weldon batted him in with a groundball single up the middle. Koski bounced a hit off the third baseman to get on but a fly ball out at centre left two on and kept the Eagles lead to 1. Score Sunshine 1, Springvale 0.
Bottom 3rd- Chatwood looked settled as he got three contact outs to send his team to bat again.
Top 4th- Wilke started with a hit to left then Jones did the same after two bunt attempts went foul. Byrne sac-bunted the runners into scoring position and that brought up the top of the Sunshine order. Hornstra scored Wilke on a hit, high and soft that landed between the fielders in right. Davis scored another on a sac fly before Richards took a diving catch in centre right for the third out, which kept the Springvale deficit to three. Sunshine 3, Springvale 0.
Bottom 4th- Price started with a hit to right, which fell just short of the fielder, then Baillie doubled to advance him to 3rd after he held up to avoid being doubled off. Chatwood bounced back with a strikeout (looking down the middle) for the second out. A running catch from Davis in left for the Eagles left two on and ended it there. Sunshine leading Springvale 3-0.
Top 5- Weldon walked but Croft was still mixing it up well from the hill for the Lions when Irons played into a fielder’s choice at 2nd. Then a fly ball to left ended it with no addition to the score.
Bottom 5- Richards had his first at bat after coming into the game for Manzie-Novotney but Chatwood found the corner again and sat him down looking. Cavanagh came in to bat for Croft after an outstanding performance from the young Springvale pitcher. He walked, then Sinclair hit to right. A pop-up to centre made it two out as Chatwood’s curve was settling for the Eagles and another fly ball ended it there.
Top 6- Richards finished it with a routine flyball after he had taken another spectacular catch for the second out to support Baillie the new pitcher for Springvale. Sunshine leading 3-0.
Bottom 6- Barnden hit flat and hard for a single to centre to start the innings. Baillie walked, then Barnden got caught in a run down trying to steal 3rd. An infield pop-up got the second out then DiGiovambattista walked. Richards hit hard but got caught in left for the third out. Score Sunshine 3, Springvale 0.
Top 7- Davis got HBP which saw Baillie hand the pitching duites to Richards of Springvale. Chatwood then scored Davis with his second triple of the afternoon to increase the Eagles lead to 4. Weldon hit a slow roller, ground out to score him and make it 5-0 with one out. Koski walked then Irons hit to centre to advance him to 3rd. Wilke dropped one in shallow centre to score another and make it 6-0. Both runners then advanced on a pass ball but that’s where it ended after a couple of routine outs. Score Sunshine 6, Springvale 0.
Bottom 7- Chatwood of Sunshine vacated the mound for Irons after throwing many pressure outs with runners on base. Cavanagh walked but got played into a fielder’s choice at 2nd. Wilke took a good running catch, deep in right for the second out, Sinclair stole 2nd after walking, with a great jump but another routine out ended it there.
Top 8- Sunshine walked as Springvale changed pitchers twice and struggled to find the zone. As the runs walked in Sunshine took their lead to 14.
Bottom 8- Springvale got two hits but Sunshine were too good and got the win after 8 innings on the mercy rule. Sunshine 14, Springvale 0.
Sunshine were very good but the final score didn't reflect that the game was close for most of the first seven innings. Croft pitched very well for the Lions and Chatwood was equally as good for the Eagles. Both teams hit with the total being 12 to 7 in Sunshine's favour. Credit to Chatwood for pitching under pressure as Springvale left many runners on base.
Chatwood was dominant with the bat as well as he hit two triples and a double.
Hits- Chatwood 3, Wilke 2 for Sunshine. Barnden 3 for Springvale.
Pitching
Chatwood (Sunshine) 6 innings, 112 pitches, 62 strikes, 50 balls. 5 Ks. 5 Hits, BB 4, Batters faced 26.
