Evan McPherson and his teammates at Werribee Giants Baseball Club have their sights set on a successful season in VSBL Division 2.
Werribee has been competitive this season, winning seven of the first ten games to stay firmly in the Division 2 race. Evan credits a boost in batting and reliable pitching as keys to Werribee’s favourable results so far. “There’s strong competition in Division 2 this year which will be a barrier for us, but we’ve got the team,” Evan said. “We’ve been competitive obviously in the past five, six years but we identified a need to improve our batting.”
Evan looks forward to getting back out on the field and playing every week as the Giants are looking to make a big statement and go all the way. “Hopefully we can get the club back up to Division 1, that would be a big goal for us,” Evan said.
After finishing third in the standings last season with a 16-7-1 record, the Giants want to keep things consistent this year. Evan says their strong friendship and sense of teamwork will help them do just that, even in tough games. “I keep playing baseball because of the mates,” Evan said.
Winning a premiership in his first-ever season of baseball has driven Evan to keep working hard to make it happen all over again with his teammates. As an athlete who is passionate about his sport, Evan encourages new players to come down and get involved in the fun at Werribee. ““If someone wanted to give the sport a try, I’d say give it a shot,” Evan said. “You’ll make great mates.”
Werribee plays St Kilda at home on Thursday night for a big midweek matchup before rounding out the series on the road, with the Giants currently sitting in third place on the ladder.
