17-year-old Genevieve Beacom stole the show as the Melbourne Aces took on the Adelaide Giants in the Melbourne Challenge over the weekend. Beacom has gained recognition across the country and the world after becoming the first woman to pitch professionally in Australia.
The standout Victorian junior made her debut for the Aces on Saturday evening after signing on as a development player for the 2022/23 Australian Baseball League season.
The left hander threw a scoreless inning working around a lead-off base runner after entering in the sixth inning.
Speaking with the Aces’ broadcast, Beacom said it was a fantastic opportunity to compete at the level.
“It was good to compete against them and get that kind of experience,” said Beacom. “I just wanted to stop the runs, they had some momentum and I just wanted to stop them scoring.”
Beacom’s appearance was the latest first for a trailblazer in Australian baseball.
She made history when she became the first female athlete to represent the Victorian U16 squad before progressing to pitch at Division 1 level in the Victorian Summer Baseball League.
