Baseball Victoria Hall of Fame Administrators: John O’Brien

John O’Brien* (administrator)

John O’Brien was a dedicated administrator in Victorian baseball.  He commenced at Frankston Baseball Club in 1945 and was club secretary from 1948 to 1962 and president in 1966 and 1967. John became a life member of Frankston Baseball Club in 1968.

He was a representative player for the Dandenong Baseball Association between 1948 and 1953. John was vice president of the Dandenong Baseball Association between 1958 and 1961 and 1975 and 1987. He was secretary of the Association between 1962 and 1974 and an umpire from 1964 to 1980. 

John is a life member of the Dandenong Baseball Association.  The best player award is named after John, the O’Brien Medal, awarded yearly from 1963 to now. The Dandenong Baseball Association holds an annual awards night called the O’Brien Medal, which the highest-ranking senior division medal is awarded.

John’s service to baseball includes administration at state level. John was treasurer of the Victorian Provincial Baseball League between 1974 and 1976 and 1989 and 1993. He was secretary of the League from 1977 to 1988 and became a life member in 1986.  John was a councillor for the Victorian Baseball Association from 1979 to 1988.  In 2000 John was recipient of the Australian Sports Medal.
