The Melbourne Aces secured their first Australian Baseball League title and Victoria's first Claxton Shield since 2010 after sweeping the Adelaide Giants in two games.
The first game of the 2020 Australian Baseball League Championship Series saw Melbourne win in a 4-3 walkoff at home on Friday, and the Aces then traveled to Adelaide and won 6-2 on Saturday night.
The Aces' thrilling victory was highlighted by home runs from MVP Shane Robinson and Delmon Young, along with a great start from Wes Helsabeck as he threw 6.2 innings with just two runs allowed on three hits, walking one and striking out seven.
Jon Kennedy, Lars Liguori and Cody Mincey combined for 2.1 innings of scoreless relief to shut the door on Adelaide and take out the title.
Robinson, Young, Nate Samson and Allan de San Miguel all recorded two hits in the game. Both de San Miguel and infielder Luke Hughes will retire from the ABL on a high note after helping Melbourne to a highly-anticipated championship victory, as the Aces will bring the Claxton Shield home to Victoria.
Congratulations to the Aces on an amazing season and a fantastic championship!
