Baseball Victoria Hall of Fame Media: Richard (Dick) Mason

Richard (Dick) Mason* (media)

During his short lifetime, Richard accumulated a wealth of knowledge of all sports, which, when added to his voice, vocabulary and personality made him one of Australia’s most forthright and colourful sporting commentators. All who worked with him whether in radio, baseball or sport in general respected the man, his skills and knowledge.

Richard was instrumental in getting baseball onto the television in Australia via his position within the ABC as head of Sports for the network and passion for the game with the Claxton Shield in the early 1980's through to his passing in 1987.

ABC television covered the Claxton shield with both Richard and Ross Straw and exposed the game to the general population in Australia.  Richard also discussed baseball on his radio program. He was awarded the Order of Australia Medal for services to sport and radio.

Richard was acknowledged as the best coach in Pee Wee baseball and enjoyed considerable success in that role both with Waverley Baseball Club and on the national level. He spent 7 years as the Victorian under 13 head coach and won four national titles.
