St Kilda and Mulgrave continue to let their bats do the talking

Baseball Victoria

Baseball is a game of opportunity. And on Sunday at Chelsea, the Dolphins capitalized on theirs while limiting the Hunters’ runs.

Shortened by rain, Ormond outhit Chelsea (four to three), but stranded five runners on base.

Wilson Yeh started for Chelsea and pitched well, striking out four and only ceding a lone earned run on four hits and a walk over five frames.

The Hunters took the early lead with their run in the first while the Dolphins tied it in the bottom of the second.

In an odd walkoff win, Chelsea went ahead for good on David Chen’s RBI single, shortly before the game was called due to inclement conditions.

Once again it was Mulgrave’s consistent, relentless attack that keyed a mercy-rule victory for the Rebels.

Mulgrave scored in every inning but the first, beginning in the second tallying one, one, five, four, three and one run to record an impressive 15-1 road victory.

Footscray tallied their lone marker in the fifth.

Normal starter Matthew Young pitched the first five frames and Joel Stubbs finished the game.

Stubbs also slugged four hits.

In a remarkable turnaround under new club coach Todd Clarkson and firsts manager Robby Lewis, the St Kilda Saints are establishing a burgeoning reputation in Division 3.

With three wins in as many games, including this dominant road victory against last year’s premiers, the Saints are off to a fast start thanks to solid starting pitching, stout defense and team hitting.

Clarkson started and pitched well, aided by some timely double plays. Consistently getting on base was key as all starting nine reached safely. Center fielder Mariano Favia again played an integral role, slugging two hits and stealing two well-timed bases. He was also made some outstanding defensive plays, including doubling off a runner at first at a crucial moment in the game.

Ben Miller was the standout hitter for the Pumas, going 2-3 and knocking in half of Pakenham’s runs.
