St Kilda and Mulgrave early pace setters in Division 3

Author: Nicholas Wood

In a windy affair that featured a combined 32 hits (eight for extra bases) and an equal amount of runs, host Chelsea steamrolled Footscray, 23-9, in seven innings to start their season on a winning note.

The second inning proved decisive. The Dolphins plated 17 runs in myriad ways, including a home run apiece by Trent Wilford, Andy Kuo and Ryan Lee.

Lucas Lu got the win for Chelsea, allowing three runs over two and one-third innings, allowing two hits, walking three and striking out four.

Allowing 16 runs in one frame usually will garner you a loss. So it was for the Bulldogs’ John Baker.

Chelsea visits Mulgrave next week while Footscray goes for its first win at Tom O’Halloran Field in St Kilda.

In a rematch of last season’s Grand Final (won by Pakenham), host Mulgrave turned the tables, upending the Pumas, 13-4, to send an early-season message.

Starting five new players from last year’s top-of-the-ladder squad—Murad Mohammad, Donnie Poole, Liam Richardson, Mitch Upton and Joel Stubs—the always solid hitting side didn’t miss a beat.

On the mound, Matthew Young pitched the first four innings, Stuart Phillips the middle three and Stubs the final frames.

The star of the game, though, was Ben ‘Hank’ Hardman who slugged five hits in six at-bats.

The Saints started their season out perfectly, whitewashing the Hunters, 25-0, at breezy Bonbeach.

Starting hurler Jarrod MacEachern pitched brilliantly, allowing only a single hit and one walk while striking out six.

St Kilda batted around in the first and never looked back. All 10 Saints got on base and the defense performed admirably. Shortstop and leadoff hitter Paul Puskar consistently set the tone with four hits.

St Kilda has their home opener on tap next Sunday; Ormond Glenhuntly, meanwhile, caravans out to Pakenham.
